Richard Cory
Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim. And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked. And he was rich - yes, richer than a king
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place. So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread; And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head.

Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869-1935) grew up in Gardiner, Maine, attended Harvard, returned to Gardiner as a freelance writer, then settled in New York City in 1896. His various odd jobs included a one-year stint as subway-construction inspector. President Theodore Roosevelt, a fan of his poetry, had him appointed to the United States Customs House in New York, where he worked from 1905 to 1909. Robinson wrote about people, rather than nature, particularly New England characters remembered from his early years. Describing his first volume of poems

21. How Annandale Went Out

To flourish, to find words, and to attend:
Liar, physician, hypocrite, and friend,
I watched him; and the sight was not so fair
As one or two that I have seen elsewhere:
A wreck, with hell between him and the end,
Remained of Annandale; and I was there.
So put the two together, if you can, Remembering the worst you know of me. With a slight kind of engine. Do you see? Edwin Arlington Robinson
Edwin Arlington Robinson was born December 22nd, 1869 at Head Tide, Main. He was the son of Edward and Mary E. (Palmer) Robinson. In 1870 the family moved from Head Tide to Gardiner, Maine, where he recieved his early education at Gardiner High School. After graduating high school, he went on to attend Harvard College from 1891 to 1893. Between 1897 and 1898 he lived in New York then returned to live there permanently in 1900. He chose New York so that he could be close to other writers. His first works, The Torrent and The Night Before , were printed in 1896 on a limited number of personally printed pamphlets which are now extremely rare. In 1897 his second volume, the first to be offered to the public, was published and entitled The Children of the Night Edwin Arlington Robinson worked in other occupations, but he mainly focused on poetry. From 1903 to 1904, he was employed by the New York subway as an inspecector. Between 1905 and 1909, he worked at the Custom House in New York doing office work. He obtained that job through influence by President Roosevelt who was a fan of Arlington's poetry. He eventually left that occupation behind to dedicate all his time to writing poetry. Between 1897 and 1922, Robinson has had eight volumes of poetry and two plays published along with the book

Robinson, Edwin Arlington The Torrent and the Night Before (1896), was revised and reissued as The Children of the Night (1897). In 1899 Robinson settled in New York City. Although his third volume of verse, Captain Craig (1902), was poorly received by critics, it attracted the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt, who secured Robinson a job in the New York customs house. He finally achieved critical recognition with The Man Against the Sky (1916). Thereafter he concentrated on long psychological narrative poems, such as Avon's Harvest The Man Who Died Twice (1924; Pulitzer Prize), Dionysus in Doubt (1925), and the Arthurian romances Merlin Lancelot (1920), and Tristram See his letters, ed. by Ridgely Torrence (1940, repr. 1980), Denham Sutcliffe (1947), and Richard Cary (1968); biographies by C. P. Smith (1965) and L. O. Coxe (1969); studies by Yvor Winters (1971) and David Burton (1986).

    • Selected Poems , edited by Robert Faggen , (1999), Penguin, 182 pages, ISBN 14 0189882 A quiet American by N. S. Thompson in The Times Literary Supplement , 30th. April 1999, page 31. "This Selected Poems of Edwin Arlington Robinson comes at a time when the tradition of American poetry is undergoing reassessment in the light cast by the New Formalist movement. Certainly Robinson is a poet any formalist can look to with admiration, both in his various lyric forms and in his blank verse, although his greatest achievement was in his choice of subject matter and the creation of a modern idiom in which to present it."

Before there was in Egypt any sound
Of those who reared a more prodigious means
For the self-heavy sleep of kings and queens
Unvisioned here and waiting to be found,

THE HOUSE ON THE HILL This poem provides an example of a villanelle.
    They are all gone away,
The House is shut and still,
There is nothing more to say. Through broken walls and gray
The winds blow bleak and shrill:
They are all gone away. Nor is there one to-day
To speak them good or ill:
There is nothing more to say. Why is it then we stray
    Around that sunken sill?
They are all gone away, And our poor fancy-play
For them is wasted skill: There is nothing more to say. There is ruin and decay To Villanelle in the Glossary Alphabetic Page Version Entire Glossary Version In the House on the Hill: They are all gone away, There is nothing more to say.
