Nearly a generation has passed since the first pioneers landed, but the transformation of Mars to an Earthlike planet has just begun. The plan is opposed by those determined to preserve the planets hostile, barren beauty. Led by rebels like Peter Clayborne, these young people are the first generation of children born on Mars. They will be joined by original settlers Maya Toitovna, Simon Fraiser, and Sax Russell.

ChatMod : Hi everyone, thanks for joining us here. I'm Ben Trumble for SCIFI. Tonight we're pleased to welcome writer Kim Stanley Robinson, the award-winning author of Icehenge, The Wild Shore and the Mars trilogy. Stan's new book is The Years of Rice and Salt. The Years of Rice and Salt is an alternate history of mankind's last 700 years. ChatMod : In this reality the Black Death is decimating Europe. Instead of killing one-third of the continent's population, the plague wipes out 99 percent. The history of the western world as we know it never happens, and all culture and civilization is based on the two world religions ‹ Buddhism and Islam.

(Nebula Award, Best Novel 1993 - http://www.sfwa.org/awards/ Inhalt:

Red Mars
by Kim Stanley Robinson
If you are looking for a way to fully experience the landscape, geography, and possible future history of our neighboring planet, Red Mars is a great starting point. Winner of the 1993 Nebula award for best novel from the SF Writers of America, the book is a return to "hard" science fiction, based on a detailed and thorough knowledge of current Mars science. The first book of a trilogy including Green Mars and Blue Mars , Red Mars is a possible future history of the colonization of Mars by a group of scientists chosen by Russia and the United States, and their efforts to create a new lifestyle on the new planet. It includes up-to-date technology with ideas which are still only theoretically possible, as well as political and psychological theory, a thorough understanding of the myths of Mars as well as other literature, and an intriguing and comprehensive storyline. Overall, Red Mars is a masterwork of the possible, as well as a thought-provoking look at the human psyche and its relationship to environment.

Sebastian Cooke Talks to Kim Stanley Robinson
An Earth-Man with a Mission Over the past half a decade Global Warming, depleting ozone and rising sea-levels - to name but three impending catastrophes - have crept their way into public awareness. Around the world individuals respond in their various ways. Some predict the Apocalypse, some boycott aerosols, some make fortunes selling sun-block! But in the world of Science-fiction and Fantasy a seed has been sown for a new sub-genre: Eco-Fiction! And at the forefront of this Green and growing movement is American SF writer Kim Stanley Robinson. His novels to date have dealt with the widest range of environmental issues, from local conservation politics and extinction-threatened species to complete ecological reconstruction. On his recent promotional tour of the UK, 'Stan' spoke of some of his personal motivations . . . The first question is obvious - where did his interest in this movement come from? "I spend as much time as I can in the wilderness," he explained. "And it seems to me this is a bad way to split up one's life - between pure wilderness and pure urban, modern reality - that it would be better to construct a life that's both, so that we had more of the natural world injected into our daily existence.

  • "The Years of Rice and Salt" by Kim Stanley Robinson A novelist imagines 700 years of history in which the plague has wiped out the West and China and Islam rule the globe. By Laura Miller "The one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it," Oscar Wilde said, and few have taken that imperative so much to heart as Kim Stanley Robinson does with his latest novel, "The Years of Rice and Salt." In this epic tale, he asks what the world would be like if Europe's people and culture had perished in the plagues of the mid-1300s. The book, which covers 700 years, from what we'd call the Middle Ages to 2091, describes a planet different in many ways from our own but in its essentials surprisingly similar. China and Dar-al-Islam (the conglomeration of Muslim nations) have become the predominant global powers, with a progressive Indian League and a confederation of the Hodenosaunee (Native Americans) filling out the map. For the most part, what a novelist tries to do with any given book is far less important that what he or she actually manages to accomplish, but it's impossible to read "The Years of Rice and Salt" without stopping now and then to contemplate the vastness of the task Robinson has set himself. Think of the challenges in writing a novel that ranges over seven centuries and most of the globe then imagine having to concoct all of the history for it as well, each year building on the events of the year before and taking Robinson's conjectural world further from the one we know. Creating a credible depiction of 10th century Beijing may seem relatively easy, but as time rolls on how will exploration unfold, civilizations bloom, technology and ideas evolve in a world where Christianity is a mere footnote and the great campaigns of Western colonialism have never taken place?

Robinson completes Mars trilogy, turns to Antarctica
    Jan. 21, 1996
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us Exactly what would it take to make Mars habitable for men and women from Earth? How would the atmosphere have to be manipulated to allow for human existence, how could the freezing, rocky soil be made to tolerate plant growth and how could the social and political problems that plague Earth be avoided in a new society? Science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson , 43, has thought long and hard about the problems of creating and sustaining a new society on Mars. He spent six years working on a 1,600-page trilogy devoted to the future history of Mars. First came "Red Mars," then "Green Mars." "Blue Mars" will be out in June. Robinson, his wife, Lisa Howell, and their two young sons live in Village Homes in West Davis. He has supported himself as a writer for the past decade and in the process established a reputation for not only being a good writer but making sure good, believable science was part of his science fiction. His first book, "The Wild Shore," published in 1984, became the first in a trilogy about Orange County, post-nuclear holocaust. Robinson grew up in Orange County. He earned a bachelor's degree at UC San Diego and a master's at Boston University. He returned to San Diego for a Ph.D. in English and American literature, which he finished in 1982. Robinson and his wife lived in Zurich for two years while Lisa completed a post-doc in environmental toxicology.

Kim Stanley Robinson to sign copies of 'Antarctica' in Davis, CA
    July 21, 1998
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us Science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson will read from his latest book, "Antarctica," and sign copies on Tuesday, July 21, 1998 at Bogey's Books in downtown Davis. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. Bogey's is located at 223 E St. Robinson's science fiction novel, "Antarctica," was published published in '97. His fascination with Antarctica reflects some of the same interests he wrote about in the Mars trilogy including the formation of an international utopia and conflict over territory. "Antarctica.". In the fall of 1996, he became the first science fiction writer to win a National Science Foundation grant for a five-week trip to the icy continent. "I was there in November and December...late spring down there," he said. "It was 30 degrees below zero at night." It's hard to believe that anyone could love that kind of life, but Robinson did. "I spent a week in a glacier area with a team doing field research...and spent some time in McMurdo, the main American base camp." His fascination with Antarctica is environmental and political. People from America, France, the former Soviet Union, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Chile have camps there, but those who signed the Antarctica Treaty do not own territory. He describes life there as a utopian effort where the stakes are low because no population has yet become permanent. That will likely change.
