Spider Robinson: boosting morale in a society with plenty of time to complain
By Tasha Robinson pider Robinson sold his first science fiction story in 1971 while working as a night watchman. "I had absolutely nothing else to do all night but stare into space or make something up," he explained in a recent phone interview. "So to kill time, I pecked out a little story about where I would rather bea bar where they'd let you smash your glass in the fireplace. When I was done, I looked at the pile of paper and I said, boy, you know, that looks just like a manuscript, like real writers produce. It would fool a civilian, probably. If I was to mail it off to magazines that buy stories, well, then they would send me rejection slips, and then I could impress women! I'd be a tragic figure of a man, I'd be the Failed Artist! How romantic can you get?" Instead of a rejection slip, Analog sent him a $400 check for the story, "The Guy With the Eyes." (Robinson discovered, he said, that $400over a week's pay for himimpressed women even more than a rejection slip.) It was the first installment in what is now known as the Callahan Sagaa series of short stories and linked novels about a bar where magical things happen, from telepathy to time travel to meetings between strangers who heal each other's deepest hurts by honestly listening to each other. Robinson mostly writes playful shaggy-dog stories packed full of horrible puns and sly in-jokes, but the Callahan stories are also deeply humanistic, imbued with an honest joy in life and an indefatigable hope for the future.

About the Usenet News Group alt.callahans - So as the door opens and we enter the bar... Mike rolls out a television and a VCR on a dolly, then plugs them into the wall. "Okay, listen up!" He announces, and all conversation momentarily ceases, "It's come to my attention that some of you are a little bit confused about what this place is, exactly, and how it fits in with the Callahans books by Spider Robinson. Well, one of our patrons," he nods to Big Al, who blushes and tries to hide himself under the pillownest, "Has made a little speech on that subject that fortunately I caught on videotape." Mike inserts a tape labeled "The Greeting" and presses play. An image of Big Al, lounging against the bar in his lecture mode, occupies the screen. "Okay," Al attempts, "here's the deal. The Place is (as someone else said, I'm sorry I've forgotten who) about as close as you're gonna get to the books on the net, BUT the books where written by one person, who knew where the story was gonna wind up before he started. This place is written by a bunch of different people, who frequently don't know what they're gonna stick in the next sentance. That produces some differences.

"Well, if your kid wants to change her name and you're called "Spider" you haven't got a leg to stand on. What the hell was I gonna say? So we negotiated as best we could." On becoming Spider On other jobs he doesn't have On the Internet is this Usenet newsgroup, alt.callahans which I'm terrified by and awed by and moved by: I don't quite know how to react. I don't spend time there because I don't dare. I see it as sort of a black hole into which I could easily get sucked and never emerge again. There's thousands of these kids and they're all fascinating people. I sense a drug shaped to fit my endorphin receptors. The first bag is free, they tell me, so I've very carefully avoided that first bag and, thank goodness, they seem to understand and they don't mind. Mostly what they took from my books was the important part. Not my name or details of plot. They took: shared pain is diminished, shared joy is increased. That's all I wanted to get out there. As long as that news is spread I don't care if you put my name after it or not. The benefits will eventually rebound to us all, including me. One of the things I like about alt.callahans is that if I wanted to completely lose their respect for all time, all I'd have to do is go there and put a message up, saying: I have a new

Spider Robinson is probably best known for his series of stores set at Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, but he has written many other books and stories. His writing is original, personal, extremely well thought out, and filled with vivid and interesting characters. 'The Spider' was a new play for the stage written by Robin Mukerjee and performed by Hills Road Sixth Form students. The play is about the effects of drugs, not on the people who use them, but on people such as the couriers, the dealers, the growers and their families. It follows the lives of several characters from all over the world and the damage that the drugs industry causes them. Its aim was to inform people and allow them to see a side of the effects of drugs which is not often shown. It was presented in an informative, entertaining way and proved to be an enjoyable challenge for the cast and guest director Noel de Berry.
Robin Mukherjee He has contributed extensively to a wide variety of Television series including 'The Bill', 'Casualty', 'Eastenders' and 'Boon'. Other TV credits include 'Grushko' starring Brian Cox and 'The Plastic Man' with John Thaw and Frances Barber. His recent feature film set in India, 'Dance of the Wind' was premiered at the Venice Film festival and won the Audience Award at the London International
