God is an Iron
by Spider Robinson I smelled her before I saw her. Even so, the first sight was shocking. She was sitting in a tan plastic-surfaced armchair, the kind where the front comes up as the back goes down. It was back as far as it would go. It was placed beside the large living room window, whose curtains were drawn. A plastic block table next to it held a digital clock, a dozen unopened packages of Peter Jackson cigarettes, an empty ashtray, a full vial of cocaine, and a lamp with a bulb of at least a hundred and fifty watts. It illuminated her with brutal clarity. She was naked. Her skin was the color of vanilla pudding. Her hair was in rats, her nails unpainted and untended, some overlong and some broken. There was dust on her. She sat in a ghastly sludge of feces and urine. Dried vomit was caked on her chin and between her breasts and down her ribs to the chair. These were only part of what I had smelled. The predominant odor was of fresh-baked bread. It is the smell of a person who is starving to death. The combined effluvia had prepared me to find a senior citizen, paralyzed by a stroke or some such crisis. I judged her to be about twenty-five years old.

Callahan's Law:
Shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased (and bad puns are always appreciated). Callahan's Place is the neighborhood tavern to all of time and space, where the regulars are anything but. Pull up a chair, grab a glass of your favorite, and listen to the stories spun by time travelers, cybernetic aliens, telepaths...and a bunch of regular folks on a mission to save the world, one customer at a time. Come inside Callahan's Crosstime Saloon and let Spider Robinson introduce you to Mike Callahan, Jake Stonebender, Doc Webster, Mickey Finn, Fast Eddie Costigan, and the rest of the gang... From the first edition 1977 paperback (shown below): Known to only a lucky few, Callahan's Place is an oasis a place where anything can happen and does. Time travelers, aliens, telepaths, and a host of others find their way to Callahan's, and the result is as full of humor, wit and sensitivity as anything you have ever read.

The Free Lunch
by Spider Robinson
Review by Eva Wojcik-Obert It was a little like learning that one unicorn exists. It changed everything. Mike felt like a biochemist who has labored for years to synthesize a wonderful new drug, then learns aborigine herb-doctors have known about that one for centuries. As they moved behind the scenes of Dreamworld, he tried to pay attention to his surroundings, but had trouble keeping his mind on the task. His eyes kept being drawn to his guide. His hero, now that he knew she existed. Mike’s hopeless, desperate, quixotic quest was actually possible. Some one had done it. I have read the cure for all the blues suffered by all those disappointed John Grisham-reading commuters: Spider Robinson’s The Free Lunch ! Read and be transported to the future. Be forewarned: Spider has taken it upon himself to remind us that realistic characters are bedeviled by scatological needs. In other words the need to "shit" and/or "pee" is never far from Mike’s twelve-year-old genius mind. Mike can’t help it: he’s a kid. Why does Robinson share this eliminatory obsession with us? I hesitate to speculate. But one guess is that he’s reminding his readers of their biological, mammalian natures. And he’s probably laughing heartily at any discomfort this might cause his fans. Please don’t let this little eccentricity steer you away from grabbing

Why Spider Robinson has my Eternal Gratitude
I'm enough of a fan to know that I can't do The Dean justice. If you came to Brass Cannon looking for a Heinlein resource, I owe you an apology. Let me offer it in the form of a story.... It's called "Why Spider Robinson has my eternal gratitude." Spider created a most unusual anthology, The Best of All Possible Worlds . In it, he alternated between his choice of an under-appreciated jewel of short fiction by an author he loved, and another story chosen by that author. So we got two Heinlein-related gems: a Heinlein short chosen by Spider, and a story of Heinlein's choosing. RAH's pick was amazing: Spider found himself translating "Our Lady's Juggler," by Anatole France. But that's not where the undying gratitude comes in. You see, in the introduction, Spider tells us how he got to meet RAH at a book signing; but instead of presenting a shiny copy of the Master's latest novel, he asked for an autograph on his tattered copy of , because it contained the ineffable short story (and Spider's choice for the anthology), "The Man Who Traveled in Elephants."

88. Spider Robinson, Callahan's Legacy
spider robinson, Callahan's Legacy (Tor Books, 1996) I like spider robinson'swriting. No, scratch that Ilove spider robinson's writing.
http://www.greenmanreview.com/callahans.html
Spider Robinson, Callahan's Legacy (Tor Books, 1996) One of the best-loved (and least explored) settings in modern science fiction is Spider Robinson's Callahan's Crosstime Saloon . Unfortunately, with Callahan's Legacy , Robinson sets about trying to correct both of those situations simultaneously. [Warning: If you are a Spider Robinson devotee of the sort who assumes that the master can do no wrong, read no further. You'll just get angry. Honest. If, however, you're a fan who appreciates what Callahan's Place stood for and meant, then by all means read on. Complaints should be addressed to Jake Stonebender, Esq.] Callahan's Legacy abandons the format of the early Callahan's books. It's not a collection of short stories. Rather, it's a full length novel that covers the events of a single night at Mary's Place, the bar run by guitar-strumming Jake Stonebender as a tribute and sequel to Callahan's. Most of the usual suspects are there Fast Eddie the piano player, Long-Drink McGonnigle, jolly Doc Webster, even the talking dog Ralph von Wau Wau. All of the old customs are there, from relentless punning to the tossing of glasses into the fireplace. All of Robinson's standard literary tropes are present, from unique perspectives on loving to references to obscure or flat-out cool musicians whom most of the readership is likely never to have heard of. In short, all of the ingredients for a rollicking, enjoyable Callahan's-style romp are in place. Just gathering the ingredients, however, doesn't mean that the recipe is going to be a success. Hell, in some cases it doesn't even guarantee that the result is going to be edible. Now, don't get me wrong. I like Spider Robinson's writing. No, scratch that I l
