About Song of the World Becoming: New and Collected Poems 1981-2001 An American poet of the first rank, Pattiann Rogers is known for verse that yokes spirituality and science. She has been described as a priestess, a physicist, a natural theologian, and an erotic poet. With daring vigor, she moves between inner and outer worlds, creating a literature unafraid to acknowledge our spiritual needs and celebrate our capacity for mystery.

Milkweed, $29.95 (1-57131-413-X). 811. For Rogers, poetry is at once a microscope and a telescope. It reveals the subatomic world and the blazing stars above, a bird perched in a tree and the effect a word of praise has on the human brain. From her first collection, The Expectations of Light (1981), through seven subsequent books, Rogers has celebrated the intricate workings of life, from its coalescence and emergence from the seas to the way a milkweed spews its seeds or how a twist of genes carries forward the instinct to seek shelter and the desire to touch. Rogers knows that everything—a breeze, a galloping horse, a surge of love—leaves a trace, alters a pattern, or sends ripples and waves out into the cosmos. In the substantial set of new poems at the prow of this magnificent retrospective collection, Rogers’ curiosity is just as active as ever, but her language is even more layered, sensual, and musical, her imagery even more mythic and vital. Rogers possesses the philosophical elegance of Stevens, the body awareness of Sharon Olds, and the keenness of Mary Oliver, but her penetrating vision, avid imagination, and open-winged exaltation are all her own. —

Rogers Reads Poems About Nature, The Two Immensities, A Mouse And God
by Alice R. O'Grady
Staff Writer Pattiann Rogers read and discussed her poetry at her morning Amphitheater lecture titled "Poems in an Expanding Universe."
Rogers reiterated her suggestion - to those who prefer not to listen for the meaning of the words - that they just listen as they would to music.
Most of the audience are here at Chautauqua partly because of the beauty of the place, she said. "Why are we moved by certain things in the natural world?" she asked. "Here's some poetry about that."
Rogers said she wrote "Till My Teeth Rattle" after reading an essay called "Against Nature." The author, Rogers said, claimed that people who say they love nature are making it up. Thinking that maybe the author was right, Rogers went outside and saw 12 magpies in a tiny tree. She thought, "Maybe she's not right." The two immensities
Rogers heard an interview with a man who said he was "struggling between the two immensities," by which he meant birth and death. "Opus from Space" was written with this in mind. "Almost everything I know is raging to be born," she said. "Everything is saying 'yes' to life … they put asphalt over me, I'm coming up anyway."
