Americana
John Updike
Alfred A. Knopf
95 pages
Updike is one of the most important novelists and short story writers of his generation. After all, how many contemporary writers have really captured the times in a way that will amuse and instruct future readers and critics? Because of his eye for detail and his genius for rich, vivid language, the author's great work will survive the book shredder long after most contemporary metafictionists have vanished. Updike's poetry, although not as widely read, is successful for these same reasons. Updike is a wonderful poet, and the pieces in this new collection point to an enormous talent for concrete language and tripping metrics. Full of vivid and common images, Americana , which is divided into four sections, is a kind of meditation on traveling. The writer touches on everything from vacation travel to the unstoppable trip we're daily making toward death. He examines the maddening frustrations and unnatural convenience of airline flights, and he even takes readers on a quiet trip around the backyard. As Updike observes, "Strange, the extravagance of it all."

That sounds like a recipe for disaster: Nature writers can sink into descriptive weenery faster than jaded Hamptonites slither into deck chairs. That few people who write about nature manage to hoist their creations above the thirsty swamp of excess description is testament to the difficulties of the venture. Yet the first two books in the new Credo series from Milkweed Press articulate some simple truths about the outdoors and American writing that play brilliantly off each other. The deeper the writers go into their subjects, the clearer things become, even if readers first have to hack through a roiling forest of simile and metaphor. In her statement of purpose, poet Pattiann Rogers says she wants to discover the spiritual attributes of contemporary cosmology to make time and geology perceptible to the heart. From chick peas through hermit crabs all the way up to the Milky Way, she visually consumes all of nature, as if each eyeball blink seals a rapturous image on her brain.

The Seasons: Monotypes by Joellyn Duesberry/Poems by Pattiann Rogers
Colorado painter Joellyn Duesberry and poet Pattiann Rogers are both deeply concerned with landscape; their monotypes and poems are complementary explorations of the natural world as witnessed through observant and poetic eyes. This exhibition explores the 4 seasons, an ancient theme that has engaged painters and poets from many cultures over many centuries.
Striped Fields in Spring II , 1996, by Joellyn Duesberry The premise that links the work of these two artists is a simple one. The process of monotype distances Duesberry from the potentially overwhelming detail of the countryside she paints, pushing her towards abstraction. There is a resonant parallel between Duesberry's monotypes and the poetry of Pattiann Rogers. Rogers evokes an idea with a few well-chosen words rather than a lengthy, detailed description. In her spare and elegant poems, she distills meaning from the factual minutiae of everyday life. The mixture of two independent types of artistic expressions- visual and literary- anchored by an old and universal theme, the seasons, encourages viewers to open up their own range of responses to contemporary art. This exhibition consists of 36 large-scale monotypes for wall installation, 4 folding screens (a monotype triptych for each season) for floor display, and 12 poems silk-screened on panels for wall installation. Hudson Hills Press (New York) will publish the book, A Covenant of Seasons, featuring the images and poetry in this exhibition in December 1998. The book will be available to exhibition sponsors through the publisher.
