Landscape
This exhibition, drawn predominantly from works recently acquired for the British Council Collection, provides an opportunity to examine the enduring interest shown by contemporary British artists in the richness and complexity of the landscape tradition in art.
The exhibition explores altered perceptions of nature and the greatly extended subject matter associated with the landscape genre. The conventional topographic view and pastoral scene have evolved to include urban and fictional environments while the influence of recent movements in 20th century art have broadened the means of representation. The classical perspective and approaches relating to the Romantic tradition are re-evaluated alongside views from an aerial perspective, from a car or train window or focused in the filmic close-up. The range of strategies of recording and representing real, imagined, or remembered scenes employ a variety of media including sound, text, projections and video as well as photography and realist or abstract painting and sculpture.

Black Box Recorder
The Black Box recorder, a commonplace piece of aviation technology provides a metaphor with which to trace the levelling eye that the video camera has come to posses in contemporary culture.
As commonly found in the hands of the amateur or the artist as the news gatherer or film maker, the video camera records everything, regardless of its status, producing an overwhelming flood of moving images from the most banal and inconsequential to the most dramatic. With the video camera now so ubiquitous, the nature of the images we consume through television - the black box in the corner of all our living rooms - has become more democratic, at least in content and appearance if not, ultimately, in production. This exhibition highlights some of the most interesting work being made in Britain at present in the medium of film and video, encompassing different trends within the media such as appropriation, performances to camera, observations or documentation, and the moving image's relationship to other media such as drawing and sculpture. The idea of rooting the exhibition in one form of presentation only - that of single screened monitor based work - will provide a formal equality that will allow the fundamental quality of single screen work - a simplicity of physical manifestation that is capable of encompassing almost all conceptual tendencies - to provide a clarifying focus, through which the viewer can examine the plethora of positions within contemporary video practice.

Andrew Parkinson A SELECTION of work from the collection of Orkney Islands Council kicked off the year at the Pier Arts Centre. The collection, a valuable and growing resource, contains work by a broad range of artists who have or have had an Orkney connection. In more recent years the collection has received a considerable boost by the regular donation of prints from members of Soulisquoy Printmakers, Kirkwall. A group of these prints went on from Stromness to the Hordamuseet in Hordaland, Norway, as part of the ongoing cultural exchange between Hordaland and Orkney.
Marking Time at the Cafe de Spencer
Robert Shaw, one of the founding members of Soulisquoy Printmakers, was among the artists included in the show in Norway, and a major retrospective of his work was on show recently at the Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh (around half the work there having previously been shown at the Pier).
Another artist who has recently shown outside Orkney is Gloria Wallington, whose work was seen in the Shetland Museum, Lerwick, back in June.
A show of a group of extraordinary new works by Steven Campbell opened at the Pier in April.

Research Research Groups Fine Art
Research Groups
Fine Art are key areas of common concern for a group of artists who work with painting, photography, drawing, sound and installation. Callum Innes employes colour and surface as the key factors in his enquiry into the fundamentals of painting. His exhaustive research into parallel processes of painting and unpainting have led to a highly original body of work which explores questions of presence and absence through evidence of different states of viscosity. For Innes process is locked into time and time is made visible in the traces of process. His works articulate light, time, space and gravity through contempletative expanses of canvas, applications of paint and traces of paint removed. The photographic work of Thomas Joshua Cooper also explores these fundamental elements (light, time, gravity and colour) through an intense process of enquiry into the nature of land (geology, geography, vegetation) and the flow of water (rivers, sea). Cooper's photographs present spaces of ritual, symbolic, and historical importance, but in such a way as to re-focus the viewer's attention to the photographic surface and its deposits of silver and selenium. His work references 19th Century landscape photography as well as 19th Century attitudes to expansion and the spread of Western culture. Cooper's research is therefore concerned with a complex interweaving of pictorial, political and psychological factors through photography.

Research Research Groups Historical and Critical Enquiry
Research Groups
Historical and Critical Enquiry Within this research group three sub-groups have been identified. G.1. History of Art, Architecture and Design The unification of this research sub-group since the last RAE when its members were returned under different UoA's (33, 60 having flagged History of Scottish Architecture and Design, and 64) reinforces its links both to practice-based research, and to other aspects of Scottish visual and material culture such as the history of industrial design, fine art and architecture. Researchers have drawn on the GSA collections in generating exhibitions and publications both within GSA, and externally, in association with other galleries, museums and publishers.
The major exhibition, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1996: Glasgow, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles) involved staff in contributions to the accompanying book (Kinchin, Stamp), and collaboration with teams producing the Mackintosh video (from the BBC1 documentary), the CDRom, and the scale models of the building; to coincided with the New York showing of the exhibition Four Studies on Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Plunkett, Trowles, MacMillan) was published by the New York School of Interior Design. (Tim, please see hard copy ) Staff have participated in conferences on Mackintosh and heritage related issues, for example, in Miscolc, York, Bratislava (1997), Budapest (1998), Riga, New York, Winnipeg (1999), Brussels, London (2000).
