Rossetti, Christina Up-Hill
Genre Poem Keywords Aging Death and Dying Disease and Health Pain ... Suffering Summary The poem is an exchange of questions and answers that compares life to a journey. The journey is up-hill all the way, but at the end is an inn, a resting place, that cannot be missed and which has a room for everyone. Commentary The poem is typical of C. Rossetti's religious poetry and the more tight-laced aspects of the Victorian period. Life is recognized as a painful task (it's up-hill all the way), yet it is the duty of mankind to undertake the trip in hopes of a peaceful rest in heaven as a reward. This message had social ramifications in the mid-late Victorian period, when many were sacrificed to the unceasing demands of growing capitalist production and imperialism. The starving seamstress ought not complain, but travel on. Pain and suffering are to be expected, not resisted; one benefits from them in the end. B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Christina (Georgina) Rossetti (1830-1894) - Pseydonym Ellen Alleyne One of the most important of English woman poets, who was the sister of the painter-poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti , and a member of the Pre-Raphaelite art movement. 'A Birthday,' 'When I Am Dead,' and 'Up-Hill' are probably Rossetti's best-known single works. After a serious illness in 1874, she rarely received visitors or went outside her home. Her favorite themes were unhappy love, death, and premature resignation. Especially her later works deal with somber religious feelings. Does the road wind uphill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.
Will the day's journey take the whole long day?
From morn to night, my friend.

(from 'Up-Hill', 1861) Christina Rossetti was born in London, one of four children of Italian parents. Her father was the poet Gabriele Rossetti (1783-1854), professor of Italian at King's College from 1831. He resigned in 1845 because of blindness. All the four children in the family became writers, Dante Gabriel also gained fame as a painter. Christina was educated at home by her mother, Frances Polidori, a former governess, an Anglican of devout evangelical bent. She shared her parents' interest in poetry and was portrayed in the paintings and drawings of the Pre-Raphaelites. Christina was the model for his brother's picture The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849), which was the first picture to be signed P.R.B. Jan Marsh has proposed in her biography

Rossetti, Christina Georgina 1830-94, English poet; sister of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. She is probably the greatest female poet in English literature. Publication of some of her poems in her brother William's magazine the Germ Dickinson , though the comparison can go no further, for Christina Rossetti, who came close to technical perfection in traditional poetic forms, experimented very little. Her gay and simple songs, especially those in Sing-Song (1872), are favorites with children. Some of her volumes of poetry are Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862), probably her best work; The Prince's Progress (1866); and A Pageant and Other Poems See studies by E. K. Charles (1985), Dolores Rosenblum (1986), A. H. Harrison (1988), and D. A. Kent, ed. (1988).

Christina Rossetti Notes Christina Rossetti wrote over one thousand poems and though she was largely ignored after her death she can today be considered, along with Emily Bronte and Emily Dickinson, one of the best English-writing women poets. She was the youngest of four children. Her father, Gabriele, was a Dante scholar, poet, and Italian political exile. Christina inherited his passion. From her mother, Frances Polidori, she inherited religious devotion. This split between passion and devotion is a constant theme throughout her work. Her brother, Dante Gabriele , was a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . The P.R.B., with which Christina was acquainted and associated, was a Victorian aesthetic movement that rejected the conventional dictates of the dominant art establishment. In fact, Christina's first love affair was with James Collinson, a member of the P.R.B. She became engaged to Collinson in 1848, however by 1850 the relationship was broken due to religious differences. (Collinson became a Catholic). Her religious devotion again impacted on her romantic life when she ended a relationship with Charles Cayley, an introverted and tongue-tied linguist, because he was an agnostic. In the war between the love of men and the love of her god, the latter ostensibly won. However the various battles fought during the campaign that represents Christina Rossetti's life have been transcribed in her poetry.

CHRISTINA GEORGINA ROSSETTI (1830-1894) Born on December 5, 1830, the English poet Christina Rossetti was the youngest child of Gabriele Rossetti and sister to both Dante Gabriel Rossetti, well known poet, painter and founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and William Michael Rossetti, English art critic, literary editor, and man of letters. As one of the most important English women poets, she became known for her works of fantasy, poems for children, and religious poetry. Christina was a devout Christian, sustained throughout her life by her religious faith, especially during the difficult times following her father's death in 1854 and the onset of a prolonged illness in 1871. Her particular attachment to the Anglican High Church caused her to break off her engagement to Pre-Raphaelite artist James Collinson in 1850 when he became a Roman Catholic, and later in 1864 to reject Charles Bagot Cayley for similar reasons. It was also her religious devotion that became the motivating force behind her life work of companionship to her mother following her father's death and, most importantly, writing poetry.

    Rossetti, Christina
English lyric poet, born in London. Although some of her earliest verse was published in the Germ (1850), a Pre-Raphaelite journal, and she sat as a model for a number of paintings by her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelites, she was not a member of the movement.
Much of Rossetti's work was religious in nature; the themes of renunciation of earthly love and concern with death shadow such favorite poems as "When I Am Dead, My Dearest" and "Up-Hill." Other poems, such as "A Birthday," are earthy, romantic, and sensuous. Rossetti's work encompasses a wide range of styles and forms. Her ballads, sonnets, love lyrics, and nonsense rhymes are all clearly products of an accomplished mind.
A devout Anglican, Rossetti spent the last 15 years of her life as a recluse. At the same time, however, Rossetti wrote delightful verse for children, such as the charming lyrics in Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book (1872). The most important collections of her work are Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862), considered her finest poetry, and The Prince's Progress and Other Poems (1866).
