Previous / Dante Gabriel Rossetti of 1 Born 1828, Died 1882 Draftsman, Painter, Photographer British Eccentric, egotistical, yet extremely sensitive, Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a force to be reckoned with. Early on, he alternated between painting and poetry, but he is best known for founding the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood along with John Everett Millais. Rebelling against English academic painting's soft forms and what appeared to be a lax morality, the Brotherhood aspired to a crisp, emotional style embracing the purity and simplicity of Italian art before Raphael. Using minute detail and elaborate symbolism, they painted from nature. Rossetti expanded the group's aims by linking poetry, painting, and social idealism and by interpreting the term Pre-Raphaelite as synonymous with a romanticized medieval past. In the second phase of the movement in the mid-1850s, Rossetti gained a powerful but exacting patron in the art critic John Ruskin. Throughout the 1850s and 1860s, Rossetti painted and drew mostly languid and sensuous female portraits, using his lover Elizabeth Siddal almost exclusively as a model. These paintings later influenced the Symbolists and also proved popular with collectors: Rossetti grew affluent enough to employ studio assistants to make copies.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti Gabriel Charles Rossetti, named after the Italian poet Dante Alghieri, was the son of an Italian patriot and his wife living in London. He adopted the name Dante in response to his father's admiration for the great Italian poet, and later in life made the story of Dante and his beloved Beatrice part of his personal and artistic mythology. In 1848 Rossetti founded, along with the other artists Ford Madox Brown, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Hunt, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which sought to return art to the purity of the style preceding Raphael and the neoclassical movement. Although he wrote from the same period, he was at first better known as a painter than a poet. In 1850 Rossetti fell in love with his model Elizabeth Siddal (most famous as Ophelia in Millais' painting of that name), herself an aspiring poet and artist, whom he first lived with and then married in 1860. After a period of invalidism and a still-born child, she died of an overdose of laudanum, perhaps deliberate. In the late 1860s, Rossetti fell commenced a long affair with Jane Morris, the wife of his friend William; she served as model for many of his poems from this period on. Although his poetry found greater favour in the 1870s, he was attacked along with his friend Swinburne by Robert Buchanan as a proponent of "The Fleshly School of Poetry." Rossetti was a major influence on later Victorians of aesthetic and decadent leanings, including Wilde and Pater.

This group of friends and colleagues - Rossetti, Hunt, and Millais - would together form the core of the innovative Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (the PRB). The program devised by the members of this group was to have a profound effect on Rossetti's early artistic development, the results of which can be seen in such works as The Girlhood of Mary Virgin and The Annunciation . In time, the painter broke away from the strict demands of the PRB and developed his own unique style. Ultimately, Rossetti's mature works focused on the depiction of stunning images of women.
