He has delighted and infuriated readers for four decades. And as his recent novels show, he's still in command
By Paul Gray (TIME) Writers, like the rest of us, are entitled to slow down when they approach retirement age. What Philip Roth did, as he began anticipating the popularly euphemistic Golden Years, was to gun his engine and rev out in rapid succession three of the strongest, most vibrant novels of his long career.

With the help of his alter ego, Nathan Zuckerman, Roth continues the inquiry into the state of the American soul during the second half of the twentieth-century. Fueled by the story of his magnetic hero, Coleman Silk, it roars, with heart-revving velocity, through a literary landscape that embraces the politics of race and sex, the Vietnam War, and the absurdity of extreme political correctness, the dumbing down of the academy, and President Clinton's impeachment. Coleman, a classics professor at a small Berkshire college, embodies all the ambition, paradox, anger, and futility of the American dream, and, over the course of his secretive life, he displays all the mettlesome powers of the Greek and Roman gods he helps immortalize. Naturally, a man this fired up makes enemies, and no one defends him when his brilliant career capsizes over a misunderstanding regarding his use of the word spooks to refer to students who failed to materialize in the classroom. How was he to know they were black? How was anyone to know that he would be the last professor on earth to make a racist remark? Enraged by the inanity of the ensuing brouhaha, Coleman resigns. Then, when his wife dies unexpectedly, he becomes involved with a woman who is half his age and illiterate. These unlikely lovers are surely doomed, and Zuckerman seems destined to discover the truth about Coleman, which reveals so many truths about the land he so passionately portrays. As Roth unfurls his hero's galvanizing tale, he protests the tyranny of prejudice and propriety, recognizes the "terrifyingly provisional nature of everything," and shakes his head in sorrow and wonder over the "inevitably stained creatures that we are."

PHILLIP ROTH
"Memories of the past are not memories of facts but memories of your imaginings of the facts." Birthplace

New Jersey, US
Education
Roth did his Master's degree and PhD work at Chicago University.
Other jobs
He enlisted in the army and worked in the Washington Public Information Office; he has combined university teaching with writing.
Did you know? The improbably named Swede Levov, put-upon hero of American Pastoral, was discovered to have a real-life counterpart with a spookily similar biography. Critical verdict The early part of Roth's career concentrated on the American Jewish experience; more recently he has focused on the waning days of the great American middle-aged male. He is fond of characters named Philip Roth, and often uses biographical events, filtered through his alter-ego narrator Nathan Zuckerman (In Deception, both Roth and his then wife appear by name and profession, she "remarkably uninteresting"). Portnoy's Complaint, maybe the only great masturbation novel, introduced his trademark style of sexual honesty mixed with shame.

April 20, 1997 The Trouble With Swede Levov By MICHAEL WOOD Philip Roth's new hero gets everything he dreamed of
Zuckerman attributes his attachment to the romance of ordinariness to a cancer scare of his own, but he offers a subtler diagnosis in ''The Facts.'' ''The whole point about your fiction (and in America, not only yours),'' he tells Mr. Roth, ''is that the imagination is always in transit between the good boy and the bad boy that's the tension that leads to revelation.'' Swede Levov is the good boy for whom life is just great except that he's not. He is the good boy whose life turns to disaster as if that's what good boys were for, and only the bad boys go free. Or he is the good boy whom Zuckerman can imagine and mourn for only in this way. This is an answer to Zuckerman's own merciless portrait of the (female) intellectual who laughs with delight at the sight of historical disorder, ''enjoying enormously the assailability, the frailty, the enfeeblement of supposedly robust things.'' But the answer itself still seeks to moralize the wreck of a world, as if Zuckerman had never heard of Job, as if the Levovs' virtue ought really, after all, to have been a protection for them, rather than an invitation to damage.
