Artist: ROUSSEL, RAYMOND Title: How I Wrote Certain Of My Books Label: EXACT CHANGE Format: Book Price: Catalog #: EC ROUSSEL "Raymond Roussel (1877-1933), next-door neighbor of Marcel Proust, can be described without exaggeration as the most eccentric writer of the twentieth century. His unearthly style based on elaborate linguistic riddles and puns fascinated the Surrealists, above all Duchamp, but also writers as diverse as Gide, Robbe-Grillet, and Foucault (author of a book-length study of Roussel). The title essay of this collection is the key to Roussel's method, and it is accompanied by selections from all his major works of fiction, drama, and poetry, translated by his New York School admirers John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, Harry Mathews, and Trevor Winkfield. Ashbery writes that Roussel's work is 'like the perfectly preserved temple of a cult which has disappeared without a trace… we can still admire its inhuman beauty, and be stirred by a language that seems always on the point of revealing its secret.' Biography bibliography work
Raymond Roussel
Born in 1887, in Paris; died in 1933, in Palermo.
French poet, novelist, and playwright. Marcel Proust and Jean Cocteau. He wrote verse at a very young age and he wrote his first novel La Doublure at the age of 10. He also studied piano and composed songs. In 1909 he received a gold medal for marksmanship. He was also a keen chess player. He is often called a fabulist. His Impressions d'Afrique , (1910), is a surreal fantasy of parts of a continent that he never visited. He had a considerable impact on the US writers John Ashbery and Harry Matthews, and they named their experimental journal after his book Locus Solus He was repeatedly blackmailed for his homosexual activities, and he was almost bankrupted by his extravagant lifestyle. He tried to screen himself from his problems with drugs and suffered from heavy addiction to barbituates. During the period 1920 to 1921 he travelled to India, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, China, Japan, and the United States of America. He also visited Africa several times and became fascinated by it. It has been said that he committed suicide in a hotel in Palermo but the event is obscure.

For some readers, Raymond Roussel resembles nobody so much as the admired party guest towards whom one is propelled by overly enthusiastic hosts who breathlessly assure one, "You'll have so much in common." But confronted with the said guest, one finds that though one might have everything in common with him, one has nothing to say. Roussel was born into an immensely wealthy Parisian family in 1877 (he died a suicide in 1933), the money surrounding him acting as a cocoon between himself and reality. The quotidian is notable by its absence from his work: this is not a literature with much appeal for anyone in search of a social conscience. But if one is magnetized by works of the imagination derived almost solely from linguistics, Roussel represents some kind of summation. How I Wrote Certain of My Books, the posthumously published testament in which Roussel delineates manybut by no means allof his writing techniques, is, as they say, essential reading. As a vade mecum it doesn't necessarily make the books easier to penetrate, but it does provide some clue as to what lies beneath them (though no matter how knowledgeable these clues make us, as readers, feel, no amount of shouting "Open Sesame!" at the threshold of the books entices them to reveal all their secrets). The most obvious examples of his expository secrets can be found early in his career, before he learnt to cover his tracks. The story

Among the Blacks 64 pages ISBN 0-939691-02-7 Cover by Trevor Winkfield Among the Blacks consists of two works: Padgett's translation of Roussel's early story "Parmi les noirs," first published in 1935 in his book , together with Padgett's memoir focusing upon his own experience among black people. Roussel's story, about a master mariner named White who encounters an African chief named Booltable, is built upon the kind of whimsical and extravagant word play (its first and last sentences are identical except for one letter in one word"pooltable"/ "Booltable") for which Roussel was idolized by the French Surrealists. In contrast, as he writes in his Afterword, Padgett's memoir "grew out of the nagging need to come to grips with the frustrations of being a white American who had grown up in a racist environment and who, despite his rejections of racism at an early age, had rarely felt unselfconscious in the company of a black person." Its language is transparent and unmannered, "an attempt simply to tell the truth, and to do so with a minumum of artfulness."
"Raymond Roussel, or genius in the pure state . . ."

    Parte seconda: La letteratura combinatoria
    1. Raymond Roussel
    1. L'enigma e l'interpretazione
