Caradec just wonders ‘who he was trying to kid’ and similarly does not take Roussel’s final work, Comment j’ai écrit certains de mes livres, on face value—few serious commentators do. Colin Raff’s review of Ford’s book states Roussel “derived none of his striking creations from experience, wrote unimpeded by introspection or sentiment, unhampered by moral reflection or facile realism.” For Raff there is nothing ‘transcendental’ in Roussel: “The author’s creative procedures are the final revelation."

Roussel, Raymond. How I Wrote Certain of My Books Review originally written for and broadcast on GLT Radio (Normal, IL) by William Gillespie. Raymond Roussel was an eccentric French writer who was born in 1877 and apparently committed suicide in 1933. His best known works of those translated into English are his novels Locus Solus and Impressions of Africa . Roussel wrote novels, tried to adapt them to the stage, and then tried to write a play for the stage. The audience responded to the play by throwing things and yelling at each other. Roussel, who never experienced anything like widespread acclaim, has nonetheless influenced French literature. Eventually, he was to gain the support of the surrealists. Decades after his death, he is remembered fondly by the OuLiPo - a group of Paris-based writers devoted to exploring new experimental literary forms. Two American poets - John Ashbery and Harry Mathews (also a member of the OuLiPo) - hold him in high esteem and here the two of them offer new translations of some of Roussel's works. How I Wrote Certain of my Books Roussel's novels are among what I consider the great untranslatable works of the twentieth century. Much of the imagery and plot detail are bizarre flowerings of imaginative detail rooted in French puns. When this is translated, one gets only the strange details, but none of the phonetic basis underlying them. Like a joke that isn't funny, or a sonnet which has been paraphrased so that it no longer rhymes.

Raymond Roussel - Impressions d'Afrique
January 18 - March 16, 1997
The books of Raymond Roussel (Paris 1977 - Palermo 1933), a long misjudged writer, were an invaluable source of inspiration to the Surrealists. Not only because of their inimitable linguistic devices based on homonyms and homophones, but also because of the absurd machines described in his stories - machines which could perform specific human actions such as painting Impressionist pictures. Roussel's novels had a powerful impact on later writers, such as Queneau and Perec, and particularly on artists Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia and Salvador Dali. Roussel in turn was inspired by Jules Verne's science fiction. The presentation in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum combines all these aspects of Roussel's work.
Roussel is the subject of numerous anecdotes. He is said to have had breakfast, lunch and dinner served immediately after each other to give him more time for his writing. He owned - and this is a true story - a custom-designed, motor-powered camper, a complete novelty for the time, in which he toured Europe with two chauffeurs and a manservant. These and other aspects of Roussel's life are displayed on large reproductions in the exhibition. The fortune left to Roussel by his mother in 1911 enabled him to publish his novels privately. To make them look like best-sellers he produced several impressions at a time, printing 'tenth impression' on the covers of brand-new publications. This did not prevent Duchamp and Picabia from being impressed by novels like

Cover by Trevor Winkfield Among the Blacks consists of two works: Padgett's translation of Roussel's early story "Parmi les noirs," first published in 1935 in his book , together with Padgett's memoir focusing upon his own experience among black people. Roussel's story, about a master mariner named White who encounters an African chief named Booltable, is built upon the kind of whimsical and extravagant word play (its first and last sentences are identical except for one letter in one word"pooltable"/ "Booltable") for which Roussel was idolized by the French Surrealists. In contrast, as he writes in his Afterword, Padgett's memoir "grew out of the nagging need to come to grips with the frustrations of being a white American who had grown up in a racist environment and who, despite his rejections of racism at an early age, had rarely felt unselfconscious in the company of a black person." Its language is transparent and unmannered, "an attempt simply to tell the truth, and to do so with a minumum of artfulness."
"Raymond Roussel, or genius in the pure state . . ."

French author Raymond Roussel (1877-1933) is one of those near-mythical eccentric figures who inhabited the fringes of artistic society, exerting a powerful influence influence on his contemporaries and later writers, such as Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, John Ashbery, and Michel Foucault. Mark Ford's new biography encompasses Roussel's life and work, tracing his bourgeois youth in Paris as the son of a successful stockbroker, his rise as a writer, and his subsequent travels. Ford also addresses Roussel's relationship with his mother, his education, his homosexuality, the mystery surrounding his death, and his relationship with Marcel Proust. The real strength of this book is Ford's analysis of Roussel's major works, including Nouvelles Impressions d'Afrique, La Doublure
