Published on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 by the Associated Press Novelist Arundhati Roy Convicted of Contempt by Nirmala George
Arundhati Roy, winner of Booker Prize, Britain's most prestigious literature award, attends a candlelight vigil for the people killed in the Indian state of Gujarat in New Delhi Sunday, March 3, 2002. On March 6, Roy was found guilty of contempt of court over a campaign to halt the building of a controversial dam. Roy, a booker prize-winning novelist and passionate campaigner against the construction of a billion-dollar dam in western India, was sentenced to one "symbolic" day of imprisonment and driven away by the police.
As about 250 supporters stood outside with banners reading "Free speech is not contempt," the court sentenced Roy to one day in prison and a $42 fine. It she does not pay, she will spend three months in prison, the court said. As she was taken from the court to Bihar Jail, Indian's largest prison, Roy she would decide Thursday whether to pay the fine and that she stood by her criticism of the court. "I am prepared to suffer the consequences," she said. "The message is clear. Any citizen who dares to criticize the court does so at his or her peril."

IT was the biggest piece of inward investment India had ever seen, a $2.9 billion bonanza, but for the Texas-based Enron it was also one of the reasons why the multinational corporation has just become one of the biggest ever corporate losses in the history of capitalism.
Arundhati Roy
One of the authors of that collapse is best-selling novelist Arundhati Roy whose Booker Prize winner, The God Of Small Things, catapulted her into international literary stardom. Not that her head has been turned by fame. When Hollywood came looking to film her work she told her agent to spin out the negotiations, make them grovel and then turn them down. In her book, the Hollywood agents are in the same league as multinationals such as Enron, which wanted to turn her native India into one big franchise. 'Is globalization about the eradication of world poverty or is it a mutant variety of colonialism, remote controlled and digitally operated?' she asked in the wake of Enron's recent fall from financial grace. Roy is an unlikely rebel. A drop-out architectural student and a one-time aerobics instructor, she comes from a middle-class family in the southern state of Kerala. She enjoys a global reputation for her fiction yet she is now a committed activist who has campaigned against nuclear testing, the war in Afghanistan and the construction of the controversial Sardar Sarovar dam in the Narmada valley in central India.

Biography of Arundhati Roy Arundhati Roy was born in 1961 in Kerala. Her mother, a Kerala native, was Christian; her father was a Hindu from Bengal. The marriage was unsuccessful, and Roy spent her childhood years in Aymanam with her mother. The influence of these early years permeates her writings, both thematically and structurally. Roy's mother, who herself was a prominent social activist, founded an independent school and taught her daughter informally. This freedom from intellectual constraint allowed Roy to write, as she puts it acccording to Jon Simmons on his "Arundhati Roy Web", "from within"; the ability to follow her inner voice, rather than having a set of restrictive rules ingrained in her, has been an integral part of her accomplishments as an adult writer. She comments that "When I write, I never re-write a sentence because for me my thought and my writing are one thing. It's like breathing, I don't re-breathe a breath... Everything I have - my intellect, my experience, my feelings have been used. If someone doesn't like it, it is like saying they don't like my gall bladder. I can't do anything about it." In the aftermath, she vacated the public sphere, focusing her energies on The

WordsWorth Interview with Arundhati Roy Arundhati Roy , author of The God of Small Things (Random House, 1997) is living the dream of most first time novelists. When she finished the book, which took almost five years to write, she hoped to get it published by a small publisher in her native land of India. Fate thought differently. When she brought the manuscript to an Indian editor he immediately loved the book and saw a marketing potential far larger than Ms. Roy had hoped. He contacted an agent in England. Within three days that agent was on Ms. Roy's doorstep asking to represent her. Rights to the book were sold in 18 countries prior to publication - now, 2 months after publication, that number has increased to 21 countries. The God of Small Things is a book, that in all accuracy, can be said to have taken the publishing world by storm. And Ms. Roy, ending a lengthy multi-country tour sounded as if she were feeling a bit battered by the storm when we spoke. An Excerpt from The God... A review by Emily Gutheinz Credit Pradip Kishen When I asked if she were finishing her tour she responded "Yes, just another three more days or four more days. But it feels like another month. First I was all over India, then I was in Norway, Denmark, Holland, and New York..after Toronto I will going back to India."

'Why would anyone abroad be interested in the book? I am not very well educated. So it's not as though I am like Salman Rushdie or Vikram Seth'
Arundhati Roy is the latest Indian writer to make international headlines. Her The God Of Small Things has earned the Delhi actress ( Massey Sahib )-turned-aerobics instructor-turned-writer an advance of Rs 35 million from her publishers, considerably more than what Vikram Seth earned for A Suitable Boy. Sunday magazine editor Vir Sanghvi met Roy recently to discuss her first novel: S ix years ago, Arundhati Roy decided to write a book. Her reasons were simple enough. She had just finished work on the film Electric Moon - - ''Not a very happy experience'' and though she was supposed to write another script for Channel Four, she wanted to do something that was more private. ''The real reason was also that I had just got a computer and I like the idea of writing on it,'' she admits. ''So, I just started putting down what was going on in my head. It was a very private thing. I wouldn't show what I had written to anybody. It would just stay in the computer. It was all just coming out of me, like smoke I suppose, and I kept putting it down.'' Then, of course, things began to happen. Roy got involved in - or more accurately, created the debate over

Reviewed by Manorama Mathai [Editor's intro: Manorama Mathai is
the author of Mulligatawny Soup

and many short stories.] As a Syrian Christian and a writer, I was eager to read The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. I must admit that I was also influenced by all the hype surrounding the publication, the six figure advance, the fervid auction and the agent who got on a plane from London and arrived at the author's door. This was heady stuff, heightened further by the fact that I know the author's family and so I could not wait to get my hands on the book. Unavailable in Bangkok, it was sent from India where the first edition was, I am told, sold out at the launch. Set in a small town in Kerala, The God of Small Things is about a family, seen from the perspective of seven-year-old Rahel. She and her twin brother, Estha, live with their mother, Ammu, who was married to a Bengali, the children's Baba, but from whom she is divorced. Ammu and, therefore, the twins seem to live on sufferance in the Ayemenem house with their grandmother, uncle, and grand-aunt Baby. The family owns a pickle factory that comes into conflict with the Communists. The family is awaiting the arrival of Sophie Mol, the twins' half-English cousin and the narrative moves backwards and forwards to the arrival and the aftermath of the death by drowning of Sophie Mol and an ill fated love affair between Ammu and the untouchable Velutha. Rahel returns to Aymanam as an adult to a decimated household, a dysfunctional twin and a decaying house.

Power Politics Roy, Arundhati. Cambridge, MA: South End, 2001. 132 pages, paperback, $12.00. ISBN: "I love the unanswered question, the unresolved story, the unclimbed mountain, the tender shard of an incomplete dream. Most of the time." Arundhati Roy's glorious writing, first made apparent to the international scene with the publication of her Booker prize-winning novel, The God of Small Things , is now exhibited in a collection of essays entitled Power Politics . Some of her fans may be surprised to see that Roy spins political non-fiction as winningly as she does fiction, but the native of India has long been recognized as a social activist and humanitarian. In Power Politics , she puts her verbal gifts in the employ of those who are voiceless. The first essay, "The Ladies Have Feelings, So...Shall We Leave It to the Experts?", is based on the 3rd Annual Eqbal Ahmad Lecture, which she was invited to give in February of 2001. In it, she ponders the ill effects of globalization, as well as the role of art and the artist in combating those effects. She defines globalization as "a process of barbaric dispossession on a scale that has few parallels in history." Utilizing impeccable research and an endless warehouse of examples and case studies, Roy powerfully argues that major corporations move silently into the Indian market, employing Indians to do the actual financial exploitation, and therefore "can have their colonies and an easy conscience." They can further pretend to be aiding the Indian people, thus donning a convincing mask for "third world repression" and financial neocolonization.

Booker-winner Arundhati Roy jailed

Wednesday March 6, 2002

Jailed: Arundhati Roy
The novelist Arundhati Roy has been jailed for one day after being found guilty of contempt by India's supreme court. In what appears to be a symbolic gesture, the court also fined the Booker-winning novelist 2,000 rupees (£28) for speaking out against work on the Narmada dam project. Roy took part in a protest against the controversial project in December alongside other environmental campaigners. In a petition filed against her the day after the demonstration, a group of lawyers claimed that she had shouted abusive slogans outside court and behaved like a "thug". Roy then issued her own affidavit, describing the petition as "absurd" and "despicable" and she was then promptly charged with contempt by the supreme court.
