Members log in During the years 1982-1986 I lived as a freelance writer in Lynchburg, Virginia. Eventually, living in Lynchburg became unfeasible. I was broke and getting deeper in debt, while our children were needing braces and college. Even if it was peaceful and cozy in Lynchburg, the bandwidth always seemed way too low - where the "bandwidth" of some information source means the number of bits per second that it delivers. What was really chafing on me the most was my strong sense that I was missing out on a great intellectual revolution: the dawn of computer-aided experimental mathematics. Fractals, chaos, cellular automata - it was everywhere. I clicked over the final switchpoint when I did some interviews to write an article on cellular automata. Those guys were having so much fun, looking at such neat things and making up such great theories about what they saw! I decided to become one of them. If you're already a mathematician, becoming a computer scientist is not so much a matter of new knowledge as a matter of new attitude. Born again. Willing to commit to the machine.

Rudy Rucker
Though Rudy Rucker is noted for the aggressive, rock-and-roll-fueled weirdness of his writing, he is also a true practitioner of Hugo Gernsback's ideal: science fiction as an educational tool. In his short fiction and novels such as Spacetime Donuts, The Sex Sphere, White Light, The Hollow Earth, The Hacker and the Ants, and Freeware, Rucker uses transrealist plots to explain abstruse points of mathematics, information theory, and computer science. Join hosts Martha Soukup and Angus MacDonald to talk with Rucker about robot personalities and what he's learned since he left Lynchburg, Virginia. She drew her puddled shape back into a more human form. "I was only teasing you, Randy. I know you're wearing a nose blocker. I can tell by the sound of your voice. Is that a leech-DIM you're holding? I've heard of them, but I've never seen one. Don't you trust me?" "My boss, Neeraj, he told me you might try and put a controller on my brain." - excerpted from Rucker's novel Freeware
Martha Soukup: Faceless people at HotWired.

What's In Rucker's Pants?
A poem by Dan Rosen
Rudy Rucker, Rudy Rucker, what's in your pants, you silly boy? You built a world where every sucker fools around, and nobody's coy. "Interested in conjugating?" (Software, 88) Says a bopper to Sta-Hi, As if everyone were mating without even knowing why. Sta-Hi always has such luck, which makes me think that Rucker's twisty, for instance, "Do you want to fuck?" (Software, 65) was asked to him by remote Misty. A statement, Rucker could be making, about an ideal world, perhaps. But his characters are all bent on taking pleasure in each other's laps. I believe that Rucker would pay good money for a sultry girl with no shirt on to ask him, "Give me a lick, honey?" (Software, 100) or something similar to turn him on. So Rudy Rucker, you callow nerd, I beg of you to calm your hormones. Promiscuity makes your writing blurred; what's in your pants should stay your own. [To other discussions of Rudy Rucker's Ware trilogy ( Software Wetware , and Freeware ) by members of English 111, Cyberspace and Critical Theory, Spring 1998.]

Summer 1999 Seek! Selected Nonfiction Rudy Rucker Four Walls Eight Windows ($15.95) by Rudi Dornemann udy Rucker's Seek! offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the more original minds in science fictiona field with no shortage of original minds. In a collection that's diverse to the verge of scattershot, Rucker's intense enthusiasm in his subjects is the one constant. Of course, Rucker himself is pretty eclectic. A science fiction writer who got in on the ground floor of the cyberpunk movement, he's also a mathematician and computer programmer. His writing includes books on mathematics as well as numerous articles in various hip new periodicals like Mondo 2000 Wired bOING bOING , and Axcess . Many of those articles are included in Seek! along with essays from such nonfiction SF magazines as Science Fiction Eye The New York Review of Science Fiction , and The Bulletin of the Science Fiction Writers of America , excerpts from the manuals to a couple of his computer programs, and a few otherwise unpublished travel notes. Even when he's being fairly straightforward, as in his highly readable "A Brief History of Computers," Rucker's quirkiness occasionally emerges. Who else would move so fluidly from "huge mainframe computers like UNIVAC and IBM" to the "Moloch whose mind is pure machinery!" section from Allen Ginsberg's "Howl"? Who else, in the course of describing German electronic computer pioneer Konrad Zuse, would casually mention that "the Nazi government's science commission was unwilling to fund Zuse's further researchthis was the same Nazi science commission which sent scouts across the Arctic ice to look for a possible hole leading to the Hollow Earth." Rucker isn't just an oddball, however; he has a firm command of his subjects, be they mathematical or literary, and the odd digressions and eccentric linkages introduce new perspectives on them.

77. The Infinite Matrix | Rudy Rucker | A Dream Of Flatland 1
Two dimensions explode with passion, betrayal, and revenge. An excerpt fromSpaceland, a novel by rudy rucker. a dream of flatland. by rudy rucker.
http://www.infinitematrix.net/stories/excerpts/spaceland1.html
a dream of flatland by Rudy Rucker
Well, we've got bad news and we've got good news. That bad news is that "A Dream of Flatland," an excerpt from Rudy Rucker's novel Spaceland , is no longer available on The Infinite Matrix website. The good news is that Spaceland will be published in June by Tor Books. At that time it will be available from fine bookstores (and I hope a few seedy ones) in cyberspace and meatspace alike. We'll leave the illustration up because it's so cool. Now, go forth and order Rudy's book. Rudy Rucker is a mathematician and computer scientist, core c-punk, and prolific writer of fiction, fact, and areas less easily categorized. His fiction has a true gonzo vector: he displays a remarkable ability to grab the tail of pretty much any idea that wanders by, hold on for dear life while it shakes the bejeesus out of him, and let it go before its spirit is broken. For more about the complexities of Rudy’s work and thought, see Tom Georgoulias’s intelligent interview with Rudy, Keeping It Transreal , in the excellent frontwheel drive , and Rudy’s short, fascinating autobiographical essay on his own website.

Jenna and Me, a short story by rudy rucker and rudy rucker, Jr. In 02.11.03.jenna and me. by rudy rucker rudy rucker, Jr. George

jenna and me by
George Bush doesn't sound as mean and stupid as I would have expected. Or maybe I'm just in a frame of mind to cut him slack. There are three armed Secret Service men here in my bedroom/Dogyears-World-Headquarters. The Trainee's been doing the talking, he's a guy my age, a fellow U. C. Berkeley graduate, or so he says, not that I ever saw him at any of the places I used to hang, like the Engineering Library, Cloyne Co-op or Gilman St. His name is Brad. All the SS guys have 4 letter, monosyllable names. Dick, John, Mark, Jeff, like that. I'm Wag. My dog made up the name. Brad starts out by asking me questions about my web sites, and about the FoneFoon cell phone worm, being vaguely threatening but a little jocular at the same time, the way these field-ops always are. It's like they try and give off this vibe that they already know everything about you, so you might as well go ahead and roll over onto your back and piss on yourself like a frightened dog. This isn't the first time the Secret Service has come to see me. The ultimate cause for their interest is that I run a small ISP company called Dogyears. "ISP" as in "Information Service Provider." If you don't want to deed your inalienable God-given share of cyberspace over to Pig Business, you can get your email and web access through my excellent www.dogyears.net instead of through the spam-pimps at AOL. Dogyears offers very reasonable rates, so do check us out. The hardware side of my Dogyears ISP is a phonebooth-sized wire cage of machines in a server hotel in South San Francisco. I pay a monthly fee and the server hotel gives me my own special wire, the magic Net wire, the proverbial snake-charmer's rope leading up into the sky. You'd think it would be a big fat wire, like one of those garden-hose-sized electrical conduits you see at step-down voltage transformer stations in the cruddier, more industrial parts of town such as the Islais Creek neighborhood where I actually live, but, no, the Net wire is standard 20 gauge copper.

Rudy Rucker: Realware
EOS/Harper Collins (Paperback), ISBN 0-380-80877-3
Reader beware! I finally finished Realware by Rudy Rucker. Take my word for it, do NOT pick it up, just walk away slowly and grab any other piece of printed material you can put your hand on. Anything, I repeat, anything including the proverbial cereal box will be better. Realware , the latest in a series of cyber-punk novels by Rucker, uses a weird mishmash of valley-girl-80s-psudo-SciFi so-called vernacular from 2054. I just can't bring myself to believe that in 2054 we'll still be saying "gnarly" as if! And I can't do justice to the dialog without giving you a couple of samples: "My name's Yoke. I'm from the moon." Or how about: "Seven aliens? …Kill them!" I must stop there. It makes my eyes hurt to read it again. And the names! We meet Om, the god of the Metamartians (non-Martian inter-galactic-traveling aliens). I can't imagine that Rucker just picked the name out of thin air. It must mean something ; it's that kind of book. Perhaps Rucker alludes to "ohm" as in electricity or "Ommmmmmm" as in meditation or the Aum Shinrikyo cult in Japan.

A cyberpunk novel
Winner of the 1983 Philip K. Dick Award
Avon Eos paperback - 167 pages
cover art by Raquel Jaramillo (left)
1982 Ace 1st edition paperback
211 pages (right) From the back cover of the current paperback:
It was Cobb Anderson who built the "boppers" the first robots with real brains. Now, in 2020, Cobb is just another aged "pheezer" with a bad heart, drinking and grooving on the old tunes in Florida retirement hell. His "bops" have come a long way, though, rebelling against their subjugation to set up their own society on the moon. And now they're offering creator Cobb immortality, but at a stiff price: his body, his soul. . .and his world. From the back cover of 1982 paperback: Cobb Anderson built the first robots with real brains, and was pleased when they revolted and set up their own society on the moon. Now the robots want to return the favor: they've promised Cobb immortality - the only gift that means much to a 70 year old anarchist with a second hand heart. The robots are sure that Cobb will be pleased, though they haven't exactly told him what they have in mind (humans are so unpredictable). After all, everything will be preserved - his memories, his personality, his style of thought - all held for eternity in the memory banks of the biggest computer robot of them all. Compared to that, what's so important about an inefficient carbon based body?
