Sewer, Gas, Electric . Aspect. 1997 Review: How to describe this book? Let's try a plot summary. Hmm. It's 2023. Acrophobic Harry Gant builds record-breaking mile-high skyscrapers in New York. His crusading ex-wife Joan teams up with a holographic Ayn Rand to prevent a new global disaster, helped by Kite, a one-armed veteran of the US Civil War, but hindered by Meisterbrau, a mutant great white shark living in the New York Sewers. Meanwhile pacifist eco-pirate Philo Dufresne pilots his pink polka-dotted submarine Yabba-Dabba-Do on a quest to save the last ring-tailed lemurs, with a surprising intervention by the Queen of England. And all these threads, and more, turn out to be linked. That captures only some of the inspired lunacy. For roughly the first two thirds of the book, very little seems to actually happen. Lots of delicious seemingly unconnected little vignettes, flash-backs, and random events are presented for our delight. The lack of perceived action isn't a problem, because the individual clips are so gorgeous. But then Ruff tosses in a lit match, and the whole carefully crafted confection goes "whoosh", with non-stop action as the threads come together. It's surreal, it's clever, it's thought provoking, it's inventive, it's funny. It's wonderful. Read it.

Ayn Shrugged Matt Ruff's is a wonderful sendup and parody of Ayn Rand's ponderous classic, Atlas Shrugged . Treading in many of the same places Rand goes in her bizarre exploration of capitalism, Ruff does a humorous deconstruction of the faux philosophy of Objectivism that will have the in-on-the-joke reader crowing (those mutt's at the Village Voice took Ruff's tongue-in-cheek dedication to Rand seriously, the book's that good!). Comprising three parts, Ruff pulls the Competent Capitalist from Atlas (this time a kind of a goodtimes hippie at heart), and follows the travails of his empire as it is set upon by the Bad Guys. Billionaire Harry Gant (who is Harry Gant?) just wants to build the biggest darn buildings in the world and make everybody happy, but a scheming artificial intelligence secretly developed by Walt Disney in the 1950's has other plans for a Future Perfect. As back story, the early 21st century saw a plague that wiped out nearly the entire black race, and the evil AI wants to finish the job. It seems strange that Ayn Rand's strange and ugly vision of Capitalism Unleashed in the service of greedy self-interest and anti-governmentism, which has such a strong resonance in the current economic tableau, is not in the forefront of philosophical discourse. The anti-collectivist, ant-altruist tenets of Rand's Objectivism would seem to mirror the culture of the new American politics and the rise of the New Right, with its grubby selfishness and knee jerk small government beliefs. Nobody is talking about Rand because she boldly wears her political heart on her sleeve. Rand openly expressed the nasty self-interest politics that New Republicanism is about but wishes to hide. Ruff plays with this mercilessly. What better embodiment of the New Right than a genocidal Disney AI, a savagely deconstructed image whose desire to destroy the black race parallels the wish fulfillment of the covert racism which is the engine of so much of the New Republican agenda.

Yet another madcap romp through the near future, with many weakly connected plots, characters who are mostly collections of peculiarities, an unexplained coincidence every few pages, and a vast conspiracy lurking behind it all: the natural reaction of the cultivated reader is to snort and reach for something much more astringent. I have the greatest respect for the natural reactions of the sensitive reader, but just this once they are worth inhibiting, and worth reading. takes place, for the most part, in New York City in 2023 - really in the Recent Future, which is just like the present, only more so. (There is no maundering about cyberspace, virtuality, or anything of that sort.) I won't give out any spoilers for the main plot-line - not that it's so suspenseful - other than to say it's a genocidal conspiracy involving the Disney Corporation. (I am a bit disturbed at how Ruff uses genocidal plagues as a plot device, but plagues are, for obvious reasons, hot stuff these days.) There are about half a dozen other plots swirling about the uncovering and foiling of the Conspiracy, connected by over-lapping characters and some involvement with Gant Industries; my favorite is the one about an ``alternative-environment-adapted
