JALAL AL-DIN RUMI
(1207-1273 A.D.)
Jalal al-Din Mohammad Ibn Mohammad Ibn Mohammad Ibn Husain al-Rumi was born in 604 A.H. (1207/8 A.D.) at Balkh (now Afghanistan). His father Baha al-Din was a renowned religious scholar. Under his patronage, Rumi received his early education from Syed Burhan-al-Din. When his age was about 18 years, the family (after several migrations) finally settled at Konya and at the age of 25, Rumi was sent to Aleppo for advanced education and later to Damascus. Rumi continued with his education till he was 40 years old, although on his father's death Rumi succeeded him as a professor in the famous Madrasah at Konya at the age of about 24 years. He received his mystical training first at the hands of Syed Burhan al-Din and later he was trained by Shams al-Din Tabriz. He became famous for his mystical insight, his religious knowledge and as a Persian poet. He used to teach a large number of pupils at his Madrasah and also founded the famous Maulvi Order in Tasawwuf . He died in 672 A.H. (1273 A.D.) at Konya, which subsequently became a sacred place for dancing derveshes of the Maulvi Order.

Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi
JALALUD'DIN RUMI, THE THIRTEENTH-CENTURY Persian lawyer-divine and Sufi, widely considered literature's greatest mystical poet, understood very well the uncontrollable and idiosyncratic impact of poetry. Yet one wonders if even he, for all his intuitive grasp of language, humanity and the cosmos foresaw the deep and diverse influence his own work would have on readers throughout the world seven centuries after his death-or the myriad meanings enthusiasts would draw from his sprawling and contradictory poems. In the Islamic world today, Rumi is read for much the same reasons he was revered during his life: for his excellence as a poet; for his rare ability to empathize with humans, animals and plants; for his personal refinement; and, above all else, for his flawless moral center and ability to direct others towards good conduct and union with Allah. Rumi's work also has been read in the West for centuries and there have been informed references to him in the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and many other eminent writers. But in recent years the popularity of his work in the West has increased to a surprising extent: according to the Christian Science Monitor, Rumi ranked as America's best-selling poet in 1997. His biography, or at least the highlights of his difficult but victorious life, should prove as inspiring as his poetry to his diverse and growing readership.

Be with those who help your being.
Don?t sit with indifferent people, whose breath
comes cold out of their mouths.
Not these visible forms, your work is deeper. A chunk of dirt thrown in the air breaks to pieces.
If you don?t try to fly,
and so break yourself apart,
you will be broken open by death,
when it?s too late for all you could become. Leaves get yellow. The tree puts out fresh roots and makes them green. Why are you so content with a love that turns you yellow?

Compiled by Juliet Mabey
Recognized as the world’s greatest mystical poet, Rumi’s ability to convey the very essence of the religious experience, to see the divine within the everyday, and to intoxicate the reader with his own passion lends his poems a universal quality. In this treasury of his writings, poems and prose from Rumi’s most famous works are helpfully organized under a spectrum of headings, from "The Sufi Way" to "Living in the Spirit". This vibrant new anthology will be treasured by all, whether they seek enlightenment or simply a taste of some of the most profound literature ever written.

Notice to the Sailors Rumi The poetry of love In the end it's getting clearer. The more the music is going forward, searching forms apt to overcome the 21st century, the more it looks back. That's because of the belief that evolution doesn't stand without solid and durable basis. It's just like a "return to the future", where technology serves ancestral wisdom, which often but not always lies in the eastern part of the planet, in places like India, Tibet, China and Japan. This tendency grew a couple of years ago, and its highest peak was the recording of the two albums "The Llama Chants" and "Oho". They're both albums in which the ancient "mantra" of Buddhist tradition (sang by Llama Gyourme and by the monk Choying Drolma) were supported and integrated by modern technology. The electronic part was cured by the French Jean-Philippe Rykiel and the American Steve Tibbetts.
