The door had opened, and under the lintel stood the thick-set figure of the Comte de Chatellerault. Before him a lacquey in my escutcheoned livery of red-and-gold was receiving, with back obsequiously bent, his hat and cloak. St. Martin's Summer
The horror in the secretary's eyes increased, but Anselme's reflected none of it. It was a grave thing, he knew by former experience, to arouse His Majesty's Seneschal of Dauphiny from his after-dinner nap; but it was an almost graver thing to fail in obedience to that black-eyed woman below who was demanding an audience. Scaramouche
All that he achieved by this was to exasperate; and his expulsion from a society grown mistrustful of him must already have followed but for his friend, Philippe de Vilmorin, a divinity student of Rennes, who, himself, was one of the most popular members of the Literary Chamber. Captain Blood Mr. Blood's attention was divided between his task and the stream of humanity in the narrow street below; a stream which poured for the second time that day towards Castle Field, where earlier in the afternoon Ferguson, the Duke's chaplain, had preached a sermon containing more treason than divinity.

    Biographical Notes
RAFAEL SABATINI was born April 29, 1875 in Jesi, Italy. His mother was English, his father Italian. His parents were operas singers who became teachers. For instance, John McCormack was among their pupils. At a young age, Rafael was exposed to many languages, attending school in Portugal and, as a teenager, in Switzerland. By the time he was seventeen, when he went to England to live permanently, he was the master of five languages. He quickly added a sixth languageEnglishto his linguistic collection. He consciously chose to write in his adopted language, because, he said, "all the best stories are written in English." After a brief stint in the business world, Sabatini went to work as a writer. By the 1940s, illness forced the writer to slow his prolific method of composition. However, he did write several additional works even during that time. He died February 13, 1950 in Switzerland. He is buried at Adelboden, Switzerland. On his head stone his wife had written, "He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad." That is, it seems to me, an apt way to remember the gifted story-teller.

They are all based on stories that flowed from the pen of one of the world's most prolific writers, Raphael Sabatini. He was born in Jesi, Italy in 1875 of an English mother and Italian father, both of whom were opera singers who became teachers. Sabatini was fluent in five languages by the time he was in his teens, but chose to write in English -his sixth language. Sabatini began writing short stories in the 1890's. His first novel, The Lovers of Yvonne , was published in 1902. But his first real success was not until Scaramouche in 1921, which held great appeal for a public still sour from the dreary horrors of modern warfare, and became an international best-seller. The next year, came his equally successful Captain Blood In all, Sabatini produced thirty-four novels, six non-fiction books, dozens of short stories and a play. He died in 1950, at the age of 85.
