SACKLER, Howard. The Great White Hope.
NY: Dial Press, 1968. His Pulitzer Prize winning play, a thinly disguised account of the trials and tribulations of heavyweight champion boxer Jack Johnson, which was made into a movie for which James Earl Jones received an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Johnson. Also winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and a Tony Award. Signed by the author . Tape shadows to endpages and one small corner bump; else fine in a near fine, lightly edgeworn dust jacket. SALINGER, J.D. The Catcher in the Rye. Boston: Little, Brown, 1951. Salinger's classic first book, a coming-of-age novel that has influenced successive generations of young people with its adolescent hero's rejection of the "phoniness" of the adult world around him combined with the authenticity of his voice. A hint of foxing to the top edge and the upper right corner of the front panel of the dust jacket and very mild tanning to the jacket spine; still a fine copy in a fine, unrestored dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. One of the nicest copies of this title we have seen offered for sale in the past several years, during which time most fine copies in fine dust jackets turn out to have had restoration to the jackets, in order to make them more attractive. Fine copies without restoration are increasingly uncommon.

Salinger, J. D. 1919-, American novelist and short-story writer, b. New York City. Salinger depicts the loneliness and frustration of individuals caught in a world of banalities and restricting conformity. His best-known work, The Catcher in the Rye (1951), is a picaresque novel that describes the adventures of a schoolboy at odds with society. It remains an extremely popular novel among adolescents, who view it as a testament to the purity and honesty of youth. Many of his short stories concern the Glass family, presented by Salinger as overly sensitive people in a materialistic world. In 1965, Salinger retreated from public life, winning an injunction in 1987 against a researcher who intended to publish excerpts of his letters. Collections of his stories, most of which first appeared in the New Yorker magazine, include Nine Stories Franny and Zooey Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters (1963), and

Salinger, J.D. American author, born in New York City. He graduated from a military academy and briefly attended two colleges; after his early literary success, he became a recluse. His most important work, The Catcher in the Rye (1951), established him as a leading author and is still widely read, especially among adolescents. The hero of the book, Holden Caulfield, became a prototype of the rebellious and confused adolescent who discerns the "phoniness" of the adult world. Other works by Salinger include the short-story collection Nine Stories (1953), Franny and Zooey (1961), and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction (both 1963). All of these works of fiction are concerned with the problems of the extremely bright and overly sensitive children of the Glass family.

In November of 1995, I created The Holden Server. Up to 1000 times a day it displayed a random quotation from J.D. Salinger's classic, Catcher in the Rye . Hotwired wrote a brief review of The Holden Server. Later it received a tip of the Hotwired hat Academe Today , an on-line journal of The Chronicle of Higher Education , did an article about it Seven months later, Mr. Salinger requested I remove this service through his literary agent. I strongly encourage you to continue enjoying the works of J.D. Salinger. Not just Catcher , but each story of his we are fortunate enough to have shared with us. My personal favorites are "Zooey" and "Seymour: an Introduction." There is still a mailing list for the discussion of J.D. Salinger and his works. Send mail to listproc@lists.nyu.edu with "subscribe bananafish firstname lastname" in the message body. For other Salinger sites on the Web, see Stephen Foskett's Bananafish .
