The Vale of Calaat No. XXII
Sandy Bay Valley in the Island of St. Helena No. I

William Miller, Albemarle Street, London: 1809
20 x 27 inches (sheet size)
$1,750 the pair Pair of landscape views from a larger set entitled "Twenty-four views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia and Egypt." The views are by Henry Salt, British Consul-General in Egypt, and well known artist, traveler, and antiquary. Salt's own collection of Egyptian antiquities was sold by Sotheby's in 1835, and many are now in the collection of the British Museum.
The period of exploration of Egypt, the Middle East, and India in the early 19th Century supported the French Empire and Regency periods, with a more literal interpretation of classicism in architecture, furniture, and decorative arts, as reflected in the works of Thomas Hope and others.
In the Vale of Calaat, Salt shows native peoples near a small village with magnificent red brown mountains in the distance. The other view shows a family in the mountainous rocky terrain of St. Helena.
Generally good condition with the usual light toning, wear, soiling, foxing. Some mild toning and chips in borders, but margins ample and easily matted out.

The Trials of Henry Kissinger

A documentary states the case for war-crimes charges against the famous diplomat.
Not rated, but probably PG-13 for language and war violence; 80 minutes.
Opening today at the Tower Theatre.
Advertisement document.write(Banner("area=slt.lifestyle.articles.positiony/adsize=300x250",300,250)) It's not surprising that it took the BBC, rather than an American TV network, to make the documentary "The Trials of Henry Kissinger." First of all, the Americans would consider it old news; why rehash mass murder in Cambodia when there's a new development in the Winona Ryder case? Second, the networks would not want to upset the American power structure even before 9-11 and the charges levied against the former secretary of state and national security adviser are quite upsetting.

Henry Salt (1780-1827)
British diplomat and collector
Salt was trained as a portrait-painter and first travelled to Egypt in the service of a nobleman (1802-1806). In 1815 he was appointed as British Consul-General in Alexandria. Here he started forming an extensive collection of antiquities for sale to the British Museum but also on his own account. His first collection was acquired by the British Museum in 1823 after long negotiations. The second collection was therefore offered to the Louvre instead (sold 1825), a third collection was auctioned after his death in 1835. A fine Book of the Dead papyrus was acquired by Reuvens on that occasion.

Henry Flagler's influence on St. Augustine Florida
The bottom line is that Henry Morrison Flagler invested over $40 million in the Florida peninsula and, more than any other, was responsible for Florida 's growth. Flagler's construction of hotels at points along the Florida East Coast railroad and his development of the agricultural industry through the Model Land Company established tourism and agriculture as Florida 's major industries. Linking the entire east coast of Florida , a state that at the time was largely an uninhabited frontier, demanded a great deal of foresight and perseverance. Nearly a century later, the effects of Henry Flagler's incredible accomplishments can still be seen clearly throughout Florida Thank you Mr. Henry Flagler for the part you played in making St. Augustine and all of Florida what it is today!

The Tomb of Ramesses II (Ramesses the Great)
in the Valley of the Kings
by
Mark Andrews
Regrettably, the huge tomb of perhaps the greatest ruler, Ramesses II , is unsuitable for excursions by tourists. For all his greatness, he perhaps chose one of the worst places for his tomb, which has seen no less then seven major flooding events. Even the underlying shale has been subjected to moisture induced swelling. The once magnificent paintings on the wall have mostly flaked off, and are now buried in different layers of flood strata. A number of people have examined this tomb (KV 7) in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank at Luxor (ancient Thebes ). It is located at the foot of the northern side of the main valley. The tomb has at least partially stood open since antiquity. Explorers and Egyptologists who have investigated the tomb include Henry Salt around 1817, Champollion and Rosellini, Lepsius, Harry Burton (for Theodore Davis) between 1913 and 1914, and the Howard Carter , who cleaned up the entrance between 1917 and 1921. All of them came away from the tomb feeling as though there was nothing in it to explore, due to the extreme damage. However, the French are back under Christian Leblanc, once again excavating this tomb but apparently with some success. Today the tomb is almost completely cleared of flood debris.
