WILLIAM SAROYAN - THE HUMAN COMEDY
William Saroyan´s book ”The Human Comedy” was published in 1943. Saroyan was born in 1908 in California by immigrated Armenian parents. William Saroyan is one of America´s major twentieth century writers. He died in 1982.
”The Human Comedy” is gentle, piognant and richly autobiographical, this delightfull novel show a boy becoming a man in a world that even in the midst of war appears sweeter, safer and more livable than our own.
In the chapter, which is about Ara´s Market you can see the autobiographical. The man, who is the owner of Ara´s Market, and his son are immigrated from Armenia, as the Saroyan family is. They feel frustration and they don´t feel quite comfortable in America.
Saroyan tries with ”The Human Comedy” to point out the American spirit. For example an Italian was called ”wops” in the book, because he wasn´t a ”true” American. Then the book says ”This is America and the only foreigners here are those who forget that this is America.”
The book is written in third person and the language is relatively easy despite that the book is written for more than fifty years ago. The book consists of thirtynine short chapters, which conduce to that the book is easy to read.

Saroyan, William (1908-1981), American writer, born in
Fresno, California. His early writings frequently deal with his
beloved Armenian family and its capacity for joy in the face of
adversity. Notable among these works are the collection of short
stories My Name Is Aram (1940) and the novel The Human
Comedy (1943). Saroyan's many plays, lyrical and loosely
constructed, include My Heart's in the Highlands, which was
produced to much acclaim in 1939, and The Time of Your Life,
for which he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1940. Saroyan
refused to accept the award for a work he deemed no more laudable than any of his others.

Books by William Saroyan
William Saroyan is a special, magical writer. Our favorite is the first chapter of My Name Is Aram . If you read only one thing of Saroyan, read this. We are also impressed by The Human Comedy . Imagine a young boy's job delivering telegrams to parents informing them their son died in WWII. It's a very good book. The writing style is simple and easy. Imagine your grandparents telling you great stories that you'll always remember. That's William Saroyan. How does he do it? We wish we knew. We also offer the script of The Time of Your Life . This is a strange play with a strange history. It has very little plot but a lot of character. The fact that it won a Pulitzer Prize tells you a lot about the times in which it was written. A film was made of the play bankrolled by and starring James Cagney. Cagney, the main character, spends 90% of the entire film sitting at a table in the middle of a bar. When asked to dance, he declines saying he never learned to dance very well. Imagine that. The film is so strange you'll want to see it several times. It made us want to read the script and learn more about the first production. Following is a list of books by and about Saroyan. We highly recommend him.

“I should like to see any power in this world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people whose wars have been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, whose literature is unread, whose music is unheard and whose prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy this race! Destroy Armenia! See if you can do it. Send them away from their homes into the desert. Let them have neither bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then, see if they will not live again, see if they will not sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.”

William Saroyan
US writer known for his stories celebrating the joy of living in spite of poverty, 1908-1981
The greatest happiness you can have is knowing that you do not necessarily require happiness. I am interested in madness. I believe it is the biggest thing in the human race, and the most constant. How do you take away from a man his madness without also taking away his identity? In those days, there was something more to the world than there is now. In the time of your life, live - so that in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite variety and mystery of it. Ignore the obvious, for it is unworthy of the clear eye and the kindly heart. If you're alive, you can't be bored in San Francisco. If you're not alive, San Francisco will bring you to life. If you can measure it, don't. If you can weigh it, it isn't worth the bother. It isn't what you're after. It isn't going to get it. I was never interested in the obvious, or in the details one takes for granted, and everybody seemed to be addicted to the obvious, being astonished by it, and forever harping about the details which I had long ago weighted, measured, and discarded as irrelevant and useless.

Filmmaker shares Saroyans life
in labor of love
By John Scalzi
The Fresno Bee It's possible that Paul Kalinian has seen more of William Saroyan than anyone else has during the past 20 years.
Kalinian, a Fresno photographer and friend of the Armenian-American literary star who died in 1981, spent the better part of the past decade piecing together a documentary on Saroyan Life as a tribute and as a way to educate others, particularly Armenians, about the man and his work.
Kalinian's efforts have paid off: Last July, his hourlong documentary, "William Saroyan: The Man, the Writer" was awarded the Leigh Weeper Gold Award for best documentary at the 18th annual Philadelphia International Film Festival. Other awards have come from the Houston International Film Festival, the Columbus International Film Festival and the Nouveau Festivale Internationale Du Cinema, in Montreal.
Later this year, Kalinian will tour the film throughout the United States and Canada to benefit the Armenian General Benevolent Union. The tour will take him to New York, Chicago and other major cities And there are plans to take the film to other countries, including Saroyan's and Kalinian's ancestral homeland of Armenia
As exciting as all of this is to Kalinian, the filmmaker stresses that personal fame or fortune was never his intention.
