A Daring Young Man: A Biography of William Saroyan by John Leggett Saroyan's downfall his own best friend; his own worst enemy Sunday, November 24, 2002 By Roger K. Miller In short stories, plays, novels, essays and memoirs, William Saroyan exuberantly proclaimed a philosophy of the decency of ordinary people, life as something to celebrate and hope as mankind's salvation. A Daring Young Man: A Biography of William Saroyan By John Leggett Knopf. ($30) But that's not the way he lived. John Leggett, who if the endnotes are any indication spent more than a decade researching and writing this biography, is fascinated by Saroyan, sympathizes with him and admires his limited literary achievements but not his personal qualities. Saroyan's many shortcomings made him, Leggett writes, "the kind of man we might cross a busy street to avoid."

Place: Fresno, California W illiam Saroyan was born in Fresno, California on August 31, 1908. His parents had both emigrated to the United States from Armenia. When Saroyan was three years old, his father died, and his mother was unable to provide for the four Saroyan children. William and his siblings were placed in an orphanage in Oakland, California. Then, after five years of being raised in an orphanage, the Saroyan children were reunited with their mother, and Mrs. Saroyan was able to re-establish the family in Fresno. W illiam attended school until he was fifteen, when he left high school to try his luck out in the world. He took on odd jobs, and began to write, hoping to get his work published. His work was not an immediate thundering success. Some of his poems and a few short stories did get published, but his genuine breakthrough came when The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze was published in 1934. This is the work that catapulted Saroyan into the spotlight, and really made him an overnight success. From that point on, Saroyan was able to write and be published, and he continued to please his widespread audience. During the course of his life, Saroyan produced more than sixty books. Many of his works were based on autobiographical themes; others explored the world of Armenian immigrants, and the themes of freedom, brotherly love, and hope and poverty during the Great Depression.

On May 19 at 7pm in the Oriental Hall, a documentary film will be shown entitled, "William Saroyan: The Man the Writer." Produced by Paul Kalinan, it portrays the life of this internationally renowned Armenian-American writer, playwright and humanitarian. The publication of Saroyan's first book, The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, brought him overnight success. Yet despite his rising fame in America, Saroyan remained true to his Armenian origins. In 1981, he died with over sixty published books, an Academy Award for Best Writing Original Screen Story and countless other awards in recognition of his works. Paul Kalinian was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1932. His interest in photography began at an early age, where he received his education in Damascus, Syria. He went on to spend time in both Canada and the US, and in 1967, he received his degree in professional photography and motion picture production from the New York Institute of Photography. Kalinan's works have been published in more than a dozen books, international newspapers and magazines, posters, encyclopedias and US stamp books. In 1976, Kalinan met up with Saroyan and began photographing his portraits. Following Saroyan's death in 1981, Kalinan prepared an audio-visual presentation of Saroyan's characteristic photographs. Later he wrote, directed and produced this film which brought him six international film festival awards, including a gold award for best documentary film.

Nelson Algren lives in an ethnic neighborhood in Chicago. Street noisescars, sirens, people arguingand radio stations fill the air. His apartment building smells of cooking food. Q: I liked A Walk on the Wild Side and The Man with the Golden Arm. In Conversations with Nelson Algren, you said that after what Hollywood did to those two books, you vowed to yourself that you would not let that happen again. Would not (1) let yourself be screwed on the money, and (2) give up artistic control of the material. You said that Hollywood wouldn't buy a book under those conditions, and if Hollywood wouldn't buy it, New York wouldn't publish it. Hollywood was where the money was. You said it used to be when a writer "went Hollywood" he had sold out, but now, if you write what New York wants you've sold out. New York is Hollywood. A: I won't say those were original insights.

    http://www.mistersf.com/literary/litsaroyan.htm
    Literary San Francisco: William Saroyan
348 Carl Street Flamboyant writer and humanitarian William Saroyan became a literary sensation at the age of 26 when his story, The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, was published by Story magazine in 1932. Around that time he lived at 348 Carl Street. His play, "The Time of Your Life," was drawn from characters and situations at a well known Pacific Avenue (then Pacific Street) pub owned by Izzy Gomez. In "The Time of Your Life," the principal setting is "Nick's," #3 Pacific . If the address still existed, it would be located at the end of a pedestrian walkway between Buildings 1 and 2 of the Golden Gateway Commons. Off stage action occurs at nearby Pier 27 . Saroyan, who called himself "The World's Greatest Writer," won the Pulitzer Prize for the play but declined it and the $1,000 purse, insisting that commerce should not drive the arts. Saroyan's novel The Human Comedy draws from his own experiences as a messenger in his native Fresno. Unique among writers, Armenian American Saroyan advanced Armenian culture as an important source of literary inspiration. Saroyan once said, "No city invites the heart to come to life as San Francisco does. Arrival in San Francisco is an experience in living." mistersf.com home
