Siegfried Sassoon:
The complete Memoirs of George Sherston
Robert Graves
(Robert Graves; , 1962, s 250.) "Uppgörelse med kriget. En soldats förklaring" (finns i sin helhet i Graves;

Documents
Siegfried Sassoon Siegfried Sassoon, one of the best known poets to emerge from the First World War, enlisted in the ranks of the Sussex Yeomanry on the outbreak of war in August 1914, and was commissioned the following year into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Serving as a subaltern on the Western Front, Sassoon gained a distinguished reputation, receiving the Military Cross in June 1916 and earning the nickname "Mad Jack" for his daring exploits in action. Wounded in the shoulder in April 1917, Sassoon was evacuated back to Britain. During his convalescence his discontent with the course of the war became more pronounced, and in July he issued a public declaration of his belief that the war was being deliberately prolonged by those who had the power to end it. Narrowly avoiding a military court martial through the intervention of his friend Robert Graves, the authorities decided that Sassoon's behaviour was a direct result of neurasthenia ("shell-shock"), and he was ordered to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh where he was placed under the psychiatric treatment of Dr W H R Rivers.

    Sassoon, Siegfried Lorraine (1886-1967) Englischer Schriftsteller, geboren in Brenchley Seine frühe Dichtung , die auf seinen Erfahrungen als Offizier im 1. Weltkrieg beruht, ist Ausdruck seiner Reaktionen auf die Brutalitäten und Verluste des Krieges. Gedicht bände wie "The Old Huntsman" (1917) und "Counter-Attack and Other Poems" (1918) zeichnen den starken Kontrast zwischen der Möglichkeit zu leben und der Wirklichkeit des sinnlosen Sterbens. Seine ausgesprochen pazifistische Haltung wurde zunächst auf eine Kriegsneurose zurückgeführt, sodaß Sassoon für einige Zeit in ein Sanatorium kam. Dort begegnete er Wilfred Owen , den er stark beeinflußte. Nachdem Owen später an der Front gefallen war, veröffentlichte er dessen dichterisches Werk. Auch nach dem Krieg widmete sich Sassoon in einer Reihe von autobiographisch geprägten Romanen diesem Thema. Drei dieser Romane erschienen zusammengefaßt als "The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston" (1937). Die Trilogie besteht aus den Bänden "Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man" "Glück im Sattel" "Memoirs of an Infantry Officer" (1930) und "Sherston's Progress" "Siegfried's Journey, 1916-1920"

    How to Die DARK clouds are smouldering into red
    While down the craters morning burns.
    The dying soldier shifts his head
    To watch the glory that returns;
    He lifts his fingers toward the skies
    Where holy brightness breaks in flame;
    Radiance reflected in his eyes,
    And on his lips a whispered name.
    You'd think, to hear some people talk,
    That lads go West with sobs and curses, And sullen faces white as chalk, Hankering for wreaths and tombs and hearses. But they've been taught the way to do it Like Christian soldiers; not with haste And shuddering groans; but passing through it With due regard for decent taste. Dreamers In the great hour of destiny they stand, Each with his feuds, and jealousies, and sorrows. Soldiers are sworn to action; they must win Some flaming, fatal climax with their lives. Soldiers are dreamers; when the guns begin They think of firelit homes, clean beds and wives.

    Seigfried Sassoon Glory of Women
    (Craiglockhart, 1917) You love us when we're heroes, home on leave,
    Or wounded in a mentionable place.
    You worship decorations; you believe
    That chivalry redeems the war's disgrace.
    You make us shells. You listen with delight,
    By tales of dirt and danger fondly thrilled.
    You crown our distant ardours while we fight, And mourn our laurelled memories when we're killed. You can't believe that British troops "retire" When hell's last horror breaks them, and they run, Trampling the terrible corpses - blind with blood. O German mother dreaming by the fire, While you are knitting socks to send your son His face is trodden deeper in the mud. Memory (Limerick, 1 February 1918) When I was young my heart and head were light, And I was gay and feckless as a colt Out in the fields, with morning in the may, Wind on the grass, wings in the orchard bloom. O thrilling sweet, my joy, when life was free And all the paths led on from hawthorn-time Across the carolling meadows into June. But now my heart is heavy-laden. I sit
