A Mist of Prophecies by Steven Saylor Published by St. Martin's Minotaur 288 pages, 2002 Buy it online "With the Romans, we have cookbooks, letters, erotic poetry, political speeches, natural history. We just have an enormous amount of literary source material that tells us not just what happened, but how did these people really think, what motivated them, what were their personalities like? And the great people on the world stage, how did their personalities clash? We have a lot of drama. There're good stories, good material." The legend of the Gordian knot runs roughly thus: For centuries, an oxcart sat in a temple square in Turkey, its yoke and shaft bound by an elaborate knot. Lured by a prophecy that whoever managed to undo the knot would become the ruler of all Asia, many nimble-fingered challengers attempted to unravel its threads. But the knot remained tied until the day that Alexander the Great rode into town.
Bent on conquering Asia, with army in tow, Alexander could not pass up the Gordian knot and its legend. He pondered the problem for a while before muttering, "It makes no difference how it is loosed." And, drawing his sword, he severed the knot with one stroke.

VOL.21 NO.38 BOOKS : STEVEN SAYLOR'S ANCIENT HABIT
Steven Saylor's Ancient Habit
BY CLAY SMITH
May 24, 2002:
Steven Saylor will be at BookPeople on Thursday, May 30, at 7pm.

A Twist at the End: A Novel of O. Henry , which took Austin's Servant Girl Annihilator murders of the 1880s and re-imagined them in a historically accurate but particularly ingenious fashion while throwing the young Texas dandy O. Henry into the mix (a mix of bloody axes and Guy Town whores, for starters). It was the first time that some mystery readers had come across Saylor because the name "Saylor" usually appears on book jackets above titles like Roman Blood and A Murder on the Appian Way . Hopefully Saylor's successful leap into the 19th century prompted his readers to join him in ancient Rome, where the great majority of his mysteries are set. Mysteries set in ancient Rome: The concept seems a little freaky, maybe too nerdy to be entirely tasteful and legit, but those who pass over Saylor's Roman books are missing out on one of the best mystery series being published today. Saylor's ability to make readers feel as if they are "rubbing elbows with the ancients" is "quite uncanny," as The New York Times Book Review has observed, and although Saylor's mastery of Roman history is clearly prodigious, his mysteries bear no trace of historical showmanship or pedantry. His sleuth, Gordianus the Finder, is an utterly fascinating and mysterious figure, a shadowy intimate of Cicero and Caesar who, as his regular order of business, investigates the lowlifes untouchable by those noblemen.

This interview with Steven Saylor was conducted in late October 1998. If you would like more information about Saylor, you can contact him on the link below. I've also reviewed the paperback edition of 'A Murder on the Appian Way
http://www.wenet.net/~saylor/
KM: What first made you become a writer? STEVEN SAYLOR: All writers begin as readers. As a boy I had a great love of books from early on. There was also a wonderful card game we'd play, called "Authors," a rummy game in which you'd collect suits of various authors - three Dickens, three Edgar Allan Poes, and so forth. Each card had a picture of the author and a list of his or her works. When I was asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?", I answered, "An author." I wanted to be like those people on those cards, you see, with my portrait and a list of all these books I'd written. That was my ambition from early on.
I was lucky to receive encouragement. I won a short story contest when I was twelve or so, sponsored by a national Methodist youth magazine. I wrote a piece of historical fiction, curiously enough, about the Spanish conquest of Peru. It was published and they paid me a bit of money. Seeing my words in print was the hook. I never thought of being anything but a writer after that. KM: What authors have influenced you, and who do you read now?

G ordianus the Finder is a Roman private eye circa 80 BC, who makes a living gathering evidence for the lengthy court cases so beloved of his era. One hot day, he is called to aid a neophyte advocate named Cicero, who is defending a man charged with that most serious of ancient crimes, parricide. The accused will say little in his own defence and hired killers dog the footsteps of all potential witnesses to the crime. The further Gordianus digs into this complex case, the more layers of "truth" are uncovered and the more danger threatens his own household. The plot is well-planned and reasonably fair to those who are familiar with the milieu. The author is plainly fascinated with the era and has done a lot of homework; but this book is uneasily balanced between the genres of historical fiction and crime fiction. I hesitate to mention genre boundaries because in general I don't believe in them; but in this case the reader should be aware that the book is extremely slow-paced for a mystery, and rather clumsy for a historical novel. In sum, Mr. Saylor's work is intelligent, well researched, deliberate, and written in thoughtful prose. However, it made my spine itch with impatience throughout I kept skipping ahead to find some action, and then forcing myself to go back (but only because I was obligated to review the book; otherwise, I would just have skimmed the whole thing). This book is like creamed spinach: it's unclear whether it's really good, or whether you convince yourself it's good because it's so patently good for you.

MYSTERY WRITER STEVEN SAYLOR TO SPEAK AT RICE MARCH 5
March 5 in the Kyle Morrow Room. Saylor’s latest two novels take place in Texas: "A Twist at the End" is based on America’s first recorded serial murders in Austin in 1885, and "Have You Seen Dawn?" is a contemporary autobiographical thriller set in a small town in Texas. Saylor has appeared in a documentary about ancient Rome on the History Channel, and he has received an award from the Mystery Writers of America for best debut short story in the mystery genre. Rice University is consistently ranked one of America's best teaching and research universities. It is distinguished by its: size-2,700 undergraduates and 1,850 graduate students; selectivity-10 applicants for each place in the freshman class; resources-an undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio of 5-to-1, and the fifth largest endowment per student among American universities; residential college system, which builds communities that are both close-knit and diverse; and collaborative culture, which crosses disciplines, integrates teaching and research, and intermingles undergraduate and graduate work. Rice's wooded campus is located in the nation's fourth largest city and on America's South Coast.

A Summary
Pawn to Queen Four
a novel by Lars Eighner
author of TRAVELS WITH LIZBETH
The empress of Osage, Oklahoma, is dead and lost are compromising photos which for years have held in check the homophobic ravings of Brother Earl (charismatic radio preacher and chairman of Holy Word of God University). Now Brother Earl rages out of control, threatening to incite a homosexual witch hunt throughout Oklahoma and the civilized world. But all is not lost. Deep in the heart of Texas, in the Realm of the Jade Throne, Queen Agnes plays her opening gambit. Her pawn: the unwitting Jim (who happens to be darkly handsome with bright blue eyes just Brother Earl's type), who's dispatched on a daring mission: Find and recover the compromising photos, or else (gulp) seduce Brother Earl and produce a new set of photos. The path is fraught with danger ... Always in the background, masterminding the game, is Agnes part Fu Manchu, part Auntie Mame, all queen. When Jim and Phil fall into the clutches of the Klan, Agnes plays her final gambit. PAWN TO QUEEN FOUR builds to a hair-raising climax and an appropriately giddy denouement. The comic charms of PAWN QUEEN FOUR range from martini-dry to boisterously bawdy; its multiple ironies are gentle and wise. P-Q4 is a fantasy that should find a loving and devoted readership.
