Rubicon by Steven Saylor (St. Martin’s Press, $23.95, V) ISBN 0-312-20576-7 Gordianus the Finder is back in the new mystery by Steven Saylor. If you haven’t had the pleasure of his company, this tale finds him a little older, a little wiser, and perhaps more provoked by human downfall than he would like to be. This is the sixth novel featuring Gordianus and ancient Rome as his backdrop. (If you haven’t read any of Saylor’s previous work, best start at the beginning of this excellent series with Roman Blood Gordianus is now nearing sixty, and has settled happily into life with his wife (his former slave) and various natural, adopted and orphaned children. He lives comfortably in his home on the Palatine, a well-to-do area in Rome. Having survived many adventures and intrigues involving the likes of Crassus, Cicero and Catalina (great figures from history who come alive with Saylor’s storytelling) he seems to be less interested in his old life and ready to be a grandfather. Just as he is getting used to a quieter life, however, a man is found murdered in his garden. Numerius Pompeius, a well-liked young man with political ties, has come to visit the Finder. Before he is able to relate the purpose of the visit, he is mysteriously strangled by some unknown intruder. Gordianus finds himself in immediate trouble due to Numerius’s family ties: he was the much loved younger cousin of Pompey, “the Great One.” Before Pompey descends upon his household, Gordianus and his clever daughter Diana are able to decipher a coded message discovered in a secret compartment of Numerius’s shoe. Written in a code of Greek and Latin letters, they discover that Numerius was collecting information on Gordianus, presumably to report back to his powerful cousin. When Pompey roars into the situation, Gordianus finds himself in a terrible situation. Rome is in a state of unrest, on the verge of chaos. Caesar and Pompey are in a power struggle which is threatening the stability of millions of people. Who is Gordianus loyal to? The arrogant and frightening Pompey? Or the brilliant General Caesar, who commands Meto, Gordianus’s son?

Roman Blood by Steven Saylor (St. Martin’s Minotaur, $5.99, V) ISBN 0-312-97296-2 Historical mysteries can serve the dual purpose of not only entertaining readers but taking us out of the mundane world for awhile. We can experience the interesting times of the Chinese curse with the comfort of knowing that when the covers are closed we’re back in our comfortable, familiar world. By that standard, the Rome in which Steven Saylor sets his novels about Gordianus the Finder is interesting and especially deadly. Under the rule of Sulla the dictator, Rome is recovering from a recent civil war that resulted in the deaths of thousands of its citizens, some after being declared an enemy of the state by Sulla. Gordianus’ case doesn’t concern these proscriptions at first. The young advocate Cicero asks Gordianus to investigate the murder of an old man, for which the son has been charged and awaits trial. Following in the footsteps of Raymond Chandler’s Sam Spade, Gordianus moves through all levels of Roman society in his quest for the truth. And, like Spade, the trail twists its way into the circles of power where telling the truth can get you killed. Saylor succeeds in merging classical times to the classic detecting tradition, offering a story full of unexpected twists right up until the last page, while breathing life into Rome’s marble statues and repopulating its ruins. We see the shopkeepers, prostitutes, nobles, wives and advocates going about their business, oblivious to history and concentrating, as we do, only on the here and now. In Saylor’s hands, the human and the historical are merged, and the result is a trip to Rome unavailable through any travel agent.

Rue Dunwitty takes a break from her busy San Francisco life to visit her grandmother in rural Amethyst, Texas. Upon arrival, she sees a poster with a young girl's picture and the words HAVE YOU SEEN DAWN? It seems the young teenager vanished without a trace Thanksgiving weekend. Rue is deeply affected by the disappearance in her sleepy hometown and can't get the poster image out of her mind.
Rue's little vacation is disrupted by a series of suspenseful events. She sees a strange light out in the field in the middle of the night. She meets the attractive new deputy with an upsetting past. She sees a body that mysteriously vanishes before authorities arrive on the scene. Dylan, her handsome new boyfriend, suddenly appears in Amethyst for a visit.
Many factors and a handful of suspicious townsfolk convince Rue that the answer to Dawn's disappearance is in Amethyst. She is close to finding the truth. Someone out there knows that and will do anything to stop Rue.
This Steven Saylor work meets all the requirements of a basic suspense novel. The rural landscape and isolated old Dunwitty farm provide a creepy setting for the tale. Technology savvy Rue leaves her better judgment back in San Francisco, thus allowing her to get into potentially dangerous jams that heighten the plot. Dylan (whose sudden arrival in Texas is a little too convenient) exhibits suspicious behavior, as do several of the other characters.

The Guardian

Writing isn't brain surgery, an editor at a New York publishing house once remarked to me. If you can teach a medical student to operate on a brain, you might think you could teach any reasonably literate person to write a novel; it's not that difficult. But I've read the books that come out of the writing courses that proliferate across America - they arrive by the dozen - and when I reach the last page they invariably fail the "so what?" test. None the less, write what you know, the creative-writing teachers declaim, and the students, who mostly know what it's like to be a student (young, horny, inexperienced, strapped for cash, with ambitions to write a novel), write about that. The dictum serves to enshrine a type of writing - introspective, autobiographical, built on the small incidents and poignant reversals of daily life - that has become the gold standard of American fiction.

Review of A MIST OF PROPHECIES by Steven Saylor ( see his website
ROMA SUB ROSA
St. Martin's Minotaur, May 2002 With Caesar and Pompey facing one another in Greece, Rome itself is left to be governed by Caesar's lieutenants. Poverty, debt, decades of civil war, and decades of swiftly changing alliances have unsettled Rome, but also made it seem to be a perfect target for men unscrupulous enough to seize a time when the armies are largely away from Italy, and when the mob can become king. Gordianus, the Finder, has fallen on hard times. Like many others, he has had to borrow and now finds himself deep in debt. Yet, his new friendship and passion with the strange seeress, Cassandra, sustains him while the rest of his life, and his city, fail around him. When Cassandra is poisoned and dies in his arms, Gordianus sets out to find the killer even though he knows that the murderer is likely to be one of the seven powerful women who attend Cassandra's funeralwomen far beyond his power to damage. Gordianus's investigation, interspersed with flashbacks of his growing relationship with Cassandra, takes him into the heart of conspiracy and the soul of the ancient Roman Republic which was then failing around him. His trips to the forum to meet with the 'chin-waggers,' the sight of lictors, axes bared in the City itself, and into the slave-ridden households of ambitious women, scheming while their husbands and lovers battle for control ring true.

LAST SEEN IN MASSILIA by Steven Saylor ( see his website
ROMA SUB ROSA
St. Martin's Minotaur, October 2000 Following an anonymous tip that his son Meto has died in Massilia, Gordianus has braved the Roman civil war to discover the truth. Caesar and Pompey battle for supremacy and the entire world seems swept up in the war. Certainly Massilia (modern day Marseilles but then a Greek colony) is no exception. Having taken Pompey's side, the city is besieged by Caesar's troops, awaiting near certain destruction. As Meto was serving as a double-agent for Caesar, he could have been killed by any number of forces. But his body was never recovered. Gordianus hardly dares hope. Entering Massilia through a siege tunnel, Gordianus has to learn the truth about his son, but is also confronted with other mysteries. He sees a woman plunge to her death from Sacrifice Rock. Was she pushed, or did she chose this means of suicide? Gordianus is nicknamed the Finder because he cannot help seeking the truth. In times of civil war, though, the truth is likely to be as dangerous as any lie. Soon Gordianus' life is in danger from old and new conspiracies. Steven Saylor: Last Seen in Massillia
St Martin's Press (Hardcover), ISBN 0-312-20928-2
Hemmed inside the walls of ancient, Greek-controlled Marseilles, Pompey's sympathizers besieging your loyalties even as Julius Caesar's legions blockade all access by land or sea, what would you expect to find? Starvation and hysteria, certainly, as well as suspicion and political intrigue in abundance. But if you happen to be Gordianus the Finder, renowned sleuth of the Roman Empire, murder finds you. In 49 B.C., civil war embroiled Rome's vast empire. Caesar crossed the Rubicon to assert his regal claim upon Rome only to find himself bitterly opposed by his former ally, Magnus Pompey. No one in the Mediterranean world could remain neutral in the face of the ensuing conflict. The merchant Greeks of the fiercely independent city-state of Massillia unwisely chose to side with Pompey, prompting Caesar to lay siege to this strategic port. Gordianus, upon receiving anonymous word of his son Meto's ignominious death as a spy and traitor to Caesar, travels to Meto's last-known location, Massillia, to seek the truth. As a father and a Finder, Gordianus refuses to believe the charges. One of Caesar's closest officers, Meto would seem the last person to double-cross the great warlord. Gordianus braves capture by both sides, a flooded siege tunnel, insane city residents and other perils in his quest. But his investigation soon takes a sinister turn when from afar he witnesses a woman plunge to her death from atop Massillia's Sacrifice Rock.
