From the preface by the author My tenure as chief art critic of 7 Days , from the Manhattan weekly's birth in March, 1988, to its sudden death in April, 1990, coincided with a period of growing muddle and malaise in New York, a sense of all-around entropy that I noted in my first column and that seems sadly confirmed by 7 Days' demise (though the proximate cause of that event was the impatience of the magazine's billionaire owner). I enjoyed the job immensely. The experience of hitting the streets every week with my most immediately burning opinions and pleasures suited me fine, and any true New Yorker can tell you that dire omens are as often a goad as a deterrent to the spirit of enjoyment in our passionately perverse town. At its best, weekly journalism seems to me a model of how to live in a city: with pried-open responsiveness to the fleeting moment (the moment, even, of overtaxed exhaustion). Column-writing, in particular, should amplify the non-stop, irascible, funny, serious talk that is the sweetest city music. "It was like every week you wrote a letter to your friends," artist Jane Kaplowitz has said to me. If it comes across that way, wonderfulkeeping in mind that in a column the "friends" addresses are people you've never met or the unexpressed sides, hidden from you, of those you know. That's part of what distinguishes sitting down to write instead of reaching for the telephone.

GREG GUMBEL Hello, and welcome back to Super Bowl XXXV. I'm Greg Gumbel. In just a few minutes, the E*Trade Halftime show will begin. We're in for a treat here today, as the halftime program devised by Laurie Anderson and Robert Wilson, is titled, 'The Life of Francis Bacon, An Expressionist Canvas of Sight and Sound'. Here to supply color commentary is the New Yorker's art critic, Peter Schjeldahl. Peter, what must Laurie Anderson be feeling right now? PETER SCHJELDAHL Images of Isolation , Anna Akhmatova's Requiem for Morality , Tom Waits' 14-minute retelling of Gotterdammerung GREG GUMBEL PETER SCHJELDAHL No, Greg, that's the work itself. Laurie Anderson has decided to convey Bacon's sense of dislocation by abandoning the traditional 12-tone scale and writing her piece for a 15-tone scale. It's a brash and brave move, although not, perhaps an entirely successful one. Still, the crowd here today seems to be transfixed by it. They're not sure whether they like it or not, but they're definitely intrigued, and they're willing to give it a chance. GREG GUMBEL Ah. Now, Peter, there seem to be three identically attired individuals down there. Can you tell us who they are?

THE WALKER Rediscovering New York with David Hammons
by PETER SCHJELDAHL Issue of 2002-12-23 and 30; Posted 2002-12-16 at http://www.newyorker.com/critics/art/
At a Starbucks in Cooper Square one recent evening, I waited in vain to meet David Hammons, the charismatic, elusive African-American artist whose much anticipated current solo show, at the Ace Gallery, is his first in New York in ten years. As the minutes went by and Hammons failed to appear (it turned out that he was waiting for me at another Starbucks, across the square), I weighed the odds that I was being treated to a custom-designed artwork. Hammons's strangely moving new installation, entitled "Concerto in Black and Blue," consists entirely of pitch-dark rooms that visitors are invited to explore with tiny flashlights in the company of other visitors whose presence is registered only by whisperings, footsteps, and firefly points of blue light. What, I thought, could be a more apt complement to an exhibition of nothing than a non-rendezvous with the artist himself? Hammons, who is fifty-nine years old, has long flouted an art world eager to make him a star. Museums and collectors prize such racially charged objects as stones crowned with hair, which the artist gathers from black barbershops, and drawings made by repeatedly bouncing a soiled basketball on ten-foot sheets of paper. He sells these works privately, often in Europe. His installations and performances tend to be ephemeral in the extreme. Perhaps his most famous work survives only in a droll photograph of the artist standing on a winter street in 1983, peddling snowballs. "I decided a long time ago that the less I do the more of an artist I am," Hammons had said to me on the phone. "Most of the time, I hang out on the street. I walk." He agreed to let me walk with him.

Known for his witty and engaging column at the Village Voice, and his more recent post at the New Yorker, Schjeldahl has also contributed pieces to the New York Times, and most of the major art magazines. From the abstract expressionists to the simulationists, this book focuses mainly on the artists and movements of the last half of the 20th century. I loved this book. It was informative, intelligently written, and highly entertaining. I found Schjeldahl to be a rare critic who is genuinely excited by the work he sees and admiring of the many artists he writes about. He may not always like the work, but he always gives it a fair and honest review. In turn, he opened up my mind to the possibilities of what art is and can be.

STUDIO SEMINAR: ADVANCED ISSUES IN EXPRESSION AND PRODUCTION (offered every Fall semester) MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY 1:00-3:50, K201 PROFESSOR MELISSA WEINMAN COURSE DESCRIPTION Prerequisite: any intermediate-level studio course. This "cap" course is required of all senior art majors in preparation for presenting their work in the Senior Exhibition. Students should have a working knowledge of the theories, practices and techniques in their area of production. The emphasis of this course is on thinking and working as an artist. This involves the process of finding one's subject, discovering one's method of working, and examining these things as parts in the creative process. Since artistic method and form are so closely related, we will also examine the relationship between the creative process, formal composition, and the content of a work of art. By focusing on process, students will be conscious of how successive pieces create a coherent body of work. Goals of the course: 1. Identify and refine aesthetic preferences. 2. Find/choose your subject(s).
