What, you haven't read The Witches of Karres You don't know what fun you're missing!
A Personal Note
I've been a fan of James H. Schmitz since the late sixties, when Ace released the Ace Special edition of The Demon Breed , with its striking cover by Leo and Diane Dillon. As you may have already noticed, I'm not shy about my favorites. In the case of James Schmitz, I try to keep an extra copy of each of this books on hand, so I can give them away to folks I think might like his work as much as I do. (Note, I say "give," not "lend." You can't lend a book by James H. Schmitz-you won't get it back.) In recent years, that's become harder and harder as copies got scarcer and scarcer. In the early eighties, I collared just about every editor I knew and pleaded with them to reprint *any* Schmitz book or story, to no avail. Stubborn to the last, I cornered Ellen Asher, editor of the Science Fiction Book Club , and I said, "Does a book have to be in print for you to reprint it as an SF Book Club edition?" I take it nobody'd ever raised the question before. -And, as she didn't say no, I pitched her James Schmitz'

The Witches of Karres
James H Schmitz
Gollancz, 2000, 344pp, £10.99, ISBN 057507 144 3
The late James H. Schmitz's delightful space opera, optioned several times for film but never yet making it to the screen, has - after years of unavailability - been reissued as a Gollancz yellowback Collector's. Originally published in 1966, it's aged well. There's a tinge of E. E. 'Doc' Smith about Schmitz's Galactic Empire, but his heroine (the redoubtable ten-year-old witch Goth) and her initially reluctant rescuer, Captain Pausert, have enough wit and energy to charm the jaded palates of today's readers. Captain Pausert visits Porlumma to trade. After a business failure on his home planet of Nikkeldepain, his luck's turned. He's sold nearly all his cargo for a handsome profit, and he's won wagers and races enough to keep him - and bride-to-be Illyla, daughter of Counsellor Onswud - in considerable style. But has his luck turned enough? By the time he leaves Porlumma - rather hastily - he's rescued three little slavegirls from their oppressive masters. Pausert, innocent and pure of heart, perhaps doesn't give proper weight to the obvious distress of those masters, who seem willing to sell their slaves for a pittance. How could three small girls be a threat to grown men? And what is the Sheewash Drive which catapults his ship halfway across the Empire? "The one you have to do it with yourself," explains The Leewit (an adorable six-year-old blonde) helpfully. The captain's rather slow. It takes him a while to work out that his passengers are witches from the prohibited - and nomadic - planet of Karres. In fact, this realisation comes too late for him to avoid bankruptcy, betrayal and banishment.

A Tale of Two Clocks

Review by
Robert Wilfred Franson Torquil / Dodd, Mead;
New York, 1962; 206 pages sometimes reprinted as Legacy March 2002
It was the time of sunrise in Ceyce, the White City, placidly beautiful capital of Maccadon, the University World of the Hub. In the Colonial School's sprawling five-mile complex of buildings and tropical parks, the second student shift was headed for breakfast, while a large part of the fourth shift moved at a more leisurely rate toward their bunks. The school's organized activities were not much affected by the hour, but the big exercise quadrangle was almost deserted for once. Behind the railing of the firing range a young woman stood by herself, gun in hand, waiting for the automatic range monitor to select a new string of targets for release. Agent of Vega to the teenage mentalist Telzey Amberdon and the witch-girls of The Witches of Karres . Trigger has an advantage over Telzey and the young witches in being of sufficient maturity for romance, and in fact herein she has a couple of romantic entanglements: with Brule Inger, her boyfriend from the earlier story "Harvest Time"; and despite her best intentions, with Heslet Quillan, the tough and quick Intelligence officer we also see in "Lion Loose". A Tale of Two Clocks is an excellent novel. So why does it give an impression of being not quite complete between its own covers?

A sharp whistling rose simultaneously from the two radiation indicators. Pale fire surged out of the ground beneath the scooters, curved over them, enclosing the men and their vehicles. For a moment, the figures of the watchmen moved convulsively in a shifting purple glow; then they appeared to melt, and vanished. The fire sank back to the ground, flowed down into it. The piercing clamor of the radiation indicators faded quickly to a whisper and ended. The scooters hung in the air, motionless, apparently undamaged. But the watchmen were gone. Eighty yards underground, the goyal lay quiet while the section it had detached to assimilate the two humans who had observed it as it left the ship returned and again became a part of it. It was a composite of billions of units, an entity now energy, now matter, vastly extensible and mobile in space, comparatively limited in the heavy mediums of a planet. At the moment, it was close to its densest material form, a sheet of unseen luminescence in the ground, sensor groups probing the spaceport area to make sure there had been no other witnesses to its arrival on Mezmiali. There appeared to have been none. The goyal began to drift underground toward a point on the surface of the planet about a thousand miles away from the spaceport. ...

57. Book Note: James H. Schmitz, Trigger & Friends

Book Note: James H. Schmitz,
This note does not contain major spoilers for the book. Another of the Baen books reissue volumes, again edited by Eric Flint and Guy Gordon (Guy doesn't make the cover of this one). Other booknotes on James H. Schmitz: Agent of Vega Telzey Amberdon The Hub: Dangerous Territory I somehow missed Schmitz when he was current; partly because he was magazine and I mostly wasn't, and he was a little early for me. I'm enjoying the reissues. They're not great, but they're fun. I doubt they'll become old favorites with all the spots read off them, though. This one is about Trigger Argee and Holati Tate, with some of Heslet Quillan. I believe there's another volume where Trigger and Telzey get together; I'm not sure that's really a safe idea, personally. These people are all damned trouble-prone. The girls are also clearly ADHD easily bored, and happy to take drastic and poorly considered actions to escape it even temporarily. Those actions nearly always turn out to have been necessary later; lucky for them. Still, I do like the shapes of some of the capers quite a lot. [dd-b] [dd-b's books] [book log] [sf] ... [pit]

58. Book Note: James H. Schmitz, Agent Of Vega
Lynx enhanced Book Note james H. schmitz, Agent of Vega. I read thisbook about 9Nov-2001. This is the first time I've read this book.
http://www.dd-b.net/dd-b/Ouroboros/booknotes/data/schmitzj-agentofvega.html
Book Note: James H. Schmitz, Agent of Vega
This note contains spoilers for the book. Yes, this is the infamous "edited" version (Baen books). I haven't taken the trouble to obtain both editions and compare them. Eric Flint says that the changes are nearly all very minor editorial corrections, and I see no reason to doubt him. I'd still prefer it hadn't been done that way, but obviously I don't consider this edition unacceptable. Other booknotes on James H. Schmitz: Agent of Vega Telzey Amberdon The Hub: Dangerous Territory This is actually a collection; there are stories other than "Agent of Vega" in it. I'm just starting the first story, and already noticing that the prose isn't as clean and controlled and focused as Doc Smith, Heinlein, Poul Anderson, or any of the big guns; never mind the brillians of Cordwainer Smith, say. This is particularly noticable, perhaps, after the accolades that Mercedes Lackey piles on it in her introduction. I liked the Zone Agent stories (the actual "agents of Vega"). Clever people, caper stories based on going in with the best prep you can and then improvising like crazy. And having powers the opposition doesn't much know about helps, too. The rest were fun too, if not so memorable. It's good to keep this sort of thing in print, especially from a commercial publisher.
