Background note: James Alexander Hamilton was born in New York, April 14, 1788, the third son of Alexander (1755-1804) and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. After graduating from Columbia College in 1805, he studied for the law, earning admittance to the New York bar in 1809. In the following year, Hamilton established a law practice in Hudson, N.Y., and in October, 1810, married Mary, the daughter of Robert Morris and granddaughter of former New York chief justice, Richard Morris. A staunch defender of his father's conservative fiscal policies, Hamilton prepared a plan for a bank operated by the Treasury Department. Although Jackson had requested the plan, it was never adopted. The demise of the Bank of the United States and the Panic of 1837 changed Hamilton's political leanings, and in 1840 he supported Harrison, and from that time forward, was identified with the Whig and, later, the Republican Parties. Although he withdrew from direct political activity after 1833, Hamilton continued to act as informal adviser to many politicians. An ardent nationalist, he disapproved of abolition on the grounds that the Constitution protected slavery. At every war between 1833 and 1861 he offered his services to his country, even urging emancipation as a military measure during the Civil War. He published several pamphlets during his lifetime and a lengthy autobiography appeared in 1869. Hamilton died in New York City at the age of ninety on September 24, 1878.

Proven Results The Institute for Learning Abilities conducted a research project in conjunction with Allegheny Middle School during the 1998-1999 school year. The goal of this project was to discover how a sample population would benefit under treatment of the Bellefonds Method Participating in the project were 31 students, ranging from grades six to eight with an average grade level of 6.5. The average length of treatment was six months with an average attendance rate of 67 percent. Students were tested in areas of passage comprehension, calculation, math reasoning and behavior. Results were based on the following:
    • Subject grades as reflected in pre-treatment GPA's compared to final report card GPA's
    • Rate of learning (number of months of learning assimilated out of a nine and one-half month school year as tested using Woodcock-Johnson Academic Achievement Tests)

Results showed considerable improvement in each of the four categories tested. See corresponding table for results*: Rate of Learning (Baseline) Rate of Learning (Treatment)
    Passage Comprehension 7 mo.

    Acknowledgments
The College is grateful to the many organizations and individuals who have contributed to its success. The Education Committee of Lancaster 250, chaired by John Jarvis and Leroy Hopkins, Jr., provided the initial grant, which was supplemented by funding from the Committee on Grants of the College. The college also awarded a Hackman Research Grant to James Leach '93, who spent the summer of 1992 exploring the holdings of various repositories and assembling an inventory of photographic images of the city's urban renewal projects. During the fall semester 1992, eleven students in the Senior Seminar in American Studies investigated specific topics related to urban renewal in Lancaster. These studentsChris Button, Tad Fleshman, Colleen Haggerty, Marie Johnson, James Leach, Andrea Mollica, Michael Piecuch, Kate Plona, Adele Sikora, Erin Snyder, Trish Zehnerconducted primary research and wrote extensive papers. Their findings helped shape the exhibition, as did the many contributions of American Studies Scholar in Residence Frank Mitchell. Numerous individuals have also aided the research, offered counsel as the exhibition took shape, or helped in some important way. Among these are Gene Aleci, John Andrew, Louis L. Athey, Norm and Edie Geist, John I. Hartman, Jr., Melvin Hess, Robert Lowing, David Schneider, Marsha Sener Schuyler, James Shultz, Scott Standish, and John Vanderzell.

Born Jane Niederhoffer in Brooklyn, New York in 1924, Jane Freilicher attended Brooklyn College and subsequently studied in the studio of artist Hans Hofmann; there she met the painter Larry Rivers. Leaving the Hoffman studio in 1948, she painted on her own in New York in the 1950s with the friendship and support of the group of New York School artists and writers that included John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, Frank O'Hara, and James Schuyler. She began to exhibit her work at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York in 1952, meeting the painter Fairfield Porter there. She married jazz pianist Jack Freilicher when she was 17; the marriage was annulled five years later. In 1952 she met the former dancer Joe Hazan whom she married in 1957. They had one daughter in 1965, Elizabeth Hazan, who also became a painter. Freilicher and her husband built a house in Water Mill (N.Y.).

I already had opened a Web-page at 578 Playdays Palace, Fortunecity, for this same information, in February of 1999. I lost access, and started this one to replace it. Then, the initial one became available to me. I decided to keep this one, in addition to the original.

He was originally from Henrietta, Monroe County, N.Y. As an adult, he relocated to Rochester, Monroe Co., N.Y., about 1904. After he married Lotta Pearl Gallup, in September 1909, he continued to live in Rochester, N.Y., until 1919. At that time, he and Lotta, with their three surviving children (of four total) relocated to Buffalo, Erie Co., N.Y. His first wife, Lotta Pearl Gallup (my grandmother), died on 8 February 1922. This was before I was born, so I never knew her. Raymond Laverne Schuyler then married his second wife, Ina B.Cole. She died 6 October 1934, before I was born, so I never knew her.
