Point of Dreams
Melissa Scott and Lisa A. Barnett
Tor, 352 pages
Order this book Scott's and Barnett's previous collaboration, the fantasy-mystery hybrid Point of Hopes , introduced Nicholas Rathe, Adjunct Point (a kind of senior police officer) in the city of Astreiant, part of a fantasy world where astrology and alchemy function as reliably as physics and chemistry. Point of Dreams returns to that world, and to Rathe, caught up in another dangerous mystery.
Every winter in Astreiant, a masque is held. Based on ancient traditions and aligned with the stars, it's integral to the health of the queen and the realmand more important now than ever, for the queen is soon to announce her chosen successor. This year, the play that's the source of the masque is itself sourced in an ancient text, the Alphabet of Desire , a compendium of flower- and plant-based spells, which most people believe to be a hoax but which may, just possibly, be real.
When a body is found on the rehearsal stage, inexplicably drowned in the absence of any water, Rathe is called in to investigate. He has enough headaches, what with trying to control the craze for flower corms produced by the coming masque, coping with the disturbances of the ghost-tide (a time of year when astrological conjunctions cause the ghosts of the dead to return), and negotiating the complications of a relationship with a new lover; he isn't thrilled at the idea of dealing with theatrical egos and touchy nobles as well. But it soon becomes clear that this is not just a simple revenge or jealousy killing. More deaths ensue, all linked in some way to the masque and its actors. Rathe begins to suspect that someone, somewhere, has a working version of the

The Jazz
by Melissa Scott, 2000
Review by Eva Wojcik-Obert The Jazz by Melissa Scott, celebrates the art of rumor-mongering in the virtual reality of cyberspace, and how ephemeral gossip can affect the real world very concretely. This is an adventure for those of you who live inside the constructs of your imagination just as fully as those folks jet-skiing their lives away. The Jazz is a welcome addition to the hacker-thriller genre known to mainstream audiences mainly through the film industry via such flicks as Hackers , S neakers and The Jazz Part of the appeal of The Jazz rests with the shady, and the straight, characters it portrays. There are the techies like Corbitt who walk the line of the law but could just as easily operate on the "wrong" side and they know it. There’s the surprisingly trustworthy cop, Vara, whose sense of right and wrong leads her into Lizzy and Keyz’ fray. And there’s the company boss cop John Hallac fighting his way through information frustration to the point where he’s ultimately forced to take a stand on what’s right and wrong. Hallac is teasingly intriguing to the point where I wanted so much more of him from Scott. Keyz/Seth is the weakest character study in the book and that’s a pity. There’s a lot of potential for conflict and growth between such disparate personalities as Tin Lizzy and this kid but Scott only scratches the surface of what’s possible with the two. She sets up a great play but only hits a double instead of a home run.

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

Melissa Scott and Lisa A. Barnett, Point Of Dreams (Tor Books, 2001) Point Of Dreams is basically a murder mystery. The city of Astreiant may be in a world where magic works and ghosts walk, but it's still a mystery. That magic only serves to complicate things for the law enforcers, the Pointsmen, so called because their stations, and perhaps their beats, are known as Points. A point is also what a Pointsman makes where a policeman would say a charge. The people of Astreiant make their words do heavy duty. The story follows the efforts of a particular Pointsman, Nicolas Rathe, to solve a series of murders in a theater. The murders are all linked to the most important play of the year for the city and the Queen of Astreiant, which means that the murders are complicated by politics and rules of diplomacy. Add the fact that Rathe's lover, Philip Eslingen, is one of the directors of the play, and the whole case becomes wonderfully messy. There are enough turns and complications in the plot to keep the murderer concealed until the end, without ever being hidden, and the world feels real enough to make you grind your teeth in frustration at the pace of justice. The best aspect of Point Of Dreams is the unity of the writing. Joint efforts like this all too often have the feel of a world created by committee. But the city of Astreiant and the people within are presented as solidly as though created by one author. There's not a single skip in the storytelling, no point at which I felt a change from author to author. The format of the story, switching between the viewpoints of the two main characters, would certainly allow for it; but Rathe and Philip feel only like two different characters, rather than two different creators. It's an impressive feat of collaboration.

A book review by Elisabeth Carey
Tin Lizzy, a designer for the website that hosted Keyz' work until it got too hot to touch, somewhat unwillingly and altogether unwisely, decides to help the kid go underground and find a way out of his troubles. It's utterly unambiguous who are the good guys and the bad guys here, but both the world they move in, and most of the major characters, except the Chief Bad Guy, are reasonably complex and interesting. There's also a good bit of humor, here, and our first introduction to Tin Lizzy, which includes an explanation of the Colors Diet, is almost worth the price of admission by itself. Camilla Scott Melissa Phillips Anderson http://www.jessicasteen.com/ This is one of the promotional pictures Camilla sent to fans asking for her autograph. Here's Camilla with a number of her castmates (l to r:) Charlotte Ross, Don Frabotta, Wally Kurth, Peggy McCay, Aimee Brooks, Mary Beth Evans and Stephen Nichols. The Horton family, circa 1990. There hadn't been this many Hortons in Salem for a number of years. Camilla's most significant storyline as Melissa was her love story with Brian Scofield. An unconventional pair, they found happiness together, along with Fluffy, his dog. The Hortons and Bradys held a vigil at Tom and Alice's house when a number of their family members were in Lawrence's country. Melissa comforted her grandfather, saying she knew they'd be together at Christmas. The Horton Children and Grandchildren performed for Alice at Christmas in 1990. Alice had just gotten a new pacemaker and the kids performed a rap to tell Alice how happy they were that she was healthy again. In 1991, Camilla was part of a large photo shoot for Soap Opera Update. She posed for a series of pictures with costars Charlotte Ross and Billy Hufsey. It was Camilla's biggest magazine feature during her years on the show.
