Descendants of Lackey William Self (4790) Generation One Lackey William Self was born between 1771 and 1786 in MO; [There is some evidence that he was born in either Tennessee or Virginia.]. He married Jane circa 1806; [probably in Missouri]. There were several families in the Bellevue Valley area that became early settlers in the Clark and Pike County areas of Arkansas which may account for Lackey moving from Texas to Arkansas. It is possible that Lewis stayed in Missouri after Lackey moved to Texas. Lewis later moved to Arkansas. Lackey and Lewis apparently settled in an area near the three forks of the Little Missouri River in the region where Murfreesboro now stands. Lackey William Self is listed in the 1830 Clark County Arkansas Census between the ages of 50 and 59. He heads a household with 1 male between 5 and 9 years old, 1 male between 10 and 14 years old, 2 males between the ages of 15 and 19, 1 male between 20 and 29 years old, 1 female 4 years old or younger, 1 female between 5 and 9 years old. Also listed is one male between the ages of 50 and 59, presumably Lackey William and one female between the ages of 40 and 49, his wife. He is listed in the 1840 Pike County Arkansas Census between the ages of 70 and 79. He is shown as the head of household of a family with 1 male under 4 years old, 2 males between 15 and 19 years old, 1 male between 20 and 29 years old, 1 female between 5 and 9 years old, 1 female between 10 and 14 years old, 1 female between 15 and 19 years old, one female between 20 and 29 years old. Also listed is one male between 70 and 79 years old, Lackey William and 1 female between 50 and 59 years old, assumed to be his wife.

The problem of self-esteem
As presented in Inventive personality type , Annie Reich defined self-esteem as "the expression of discrepancy or harmony between self-representation and the wishful concept of the self." William James gave a similar definition in Chapter 10 of his The Principles of Psychology , and formulated it as, "Self-esteem = Success / Pretensions." James (1890) viewed self-esteem as an evaluative process; he argued that self-esteem, at its simplest, could be measured as the ratio of a person's successes to his or her pretensions. Pretensions are viewed as goals, purposes, or aims, whereas successes constitute the perception of the attainment of those goals. As people attain more of their pretensions, the ratio grows larger and self-esteem becomes correspondingly stronger. Pretensions also add a vulnerability component to self-esteem in that these are the areas where the individual is proposed to be most competent. If he or she comes up short in the percerption of goal-attainment, or in comparison with others in the same pretension arena, self-esteem suffers. A realization of shortcomings in an area that was not important to the individual, however, would not result in a devaluation of personal worth (Bernet et al., 1993, pg. 141). The following is an excerpt from James's discussion of the problem of self-esteem: Rivalry and Conflict of the Different Selves.

http://www.american-philosophy.org/2003_conference/2003_papers/dp-16.htm
William James On Crossing the Internal Divide: A Reply to Richard Gale Abstract This paper replies to Richard Gale’s thesis in The Divided Self of William James that the Promethean pragmatist and the anti-Promethean mystic in James represent an uncrossable internal divide.  In contrast to this fundamentally tragic reading of James, this paper argues for the view that James made great progress toward negotiating this divide in the last ten years of his life.  It contends that Gale’s thesis is based on an overcharacterization of James as a mystic, that it makes the mistake of intellectualizing the Promethean and the mystical aspects of experience, and that it ignores key texts that show James’s progress.  The paper concludes by pointing toward some of the benefits of a less tragic reading of James.
William James On Crossing the Internal Divide: A Reply to Richard Gale In his book The Divided Self of William James , Richard Gale gives us an impressively thorough and detailed analysis of many of the themes at the heart of James’s life and work.  Gale takes James quite seriously and works out these themes with great care and rigor—a method not always followed by James scholars.  Just as impressive is Gale’s ability to apply his rigorous method in a very playful and witty style.  The result is an important and quite entertaining contribution to James scholarship. As much as I value Gale’s book, however, and as much as I have learned from it, I find myself in fundamental disagreement with its basic thesis.  Gale argues that the Promethean pragmatist and the anti-Promethean mystic in James clash, resulting in an unresolved and unresolvable tension.  According to Gale, this clash results in a number of aporiai James was never able to work through, so that the division in James’s psyche is deep and synchronic.  James is left with no other recourse than to spend his life singing “The Divided Self Blues.”  This basic thesis of Gale’s book I propose to call the “Aporetic Thesis.”
