[This essay originally appeared in The Art Bulletin, . In fact, the painting seems to have been virtually unknown until its inclusion in the 1971 Pitti Palace exhibition "Firenze e l'lnghilterra, " despite the fact that a copy of it also hands in Hunt's London club, The Athenaeum. Although the catalogue of the exhibition reproduces the Self-portrait , it contains little information about it, and the relevant catalogue entry confines itself to general remarks about Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This little-studied work would deserve our attention if only because it is the finest self-portrait painted by an original member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . But the Uffizi Self-portrait also adds to our knowledge of Hunt at mid-career and has the additional importance of being the pictorial means by which the artist chose to sum up his life and art.

William Holman Hunt's "Oriental Mania" and His Uffizi Self-portrait (III)
George P. Landow , Professor of English and Art, Brown University
[This essay originally appeared in The Art Bulletin, The public meanings of the Self-portrait appear in the fact that the painter represents himself in the roles he had enacted when he traveled to the Middle East those of adventurer, explorer, ethnographer, and pilgrim. Like so many European travelers, he had a love affair with the Middle East; and despite all the hardships and difficulties he endured while painting in Egypt, Syria, and Palestine, he remained enthralled by these lands which had provided the setting for both sacred history and the Arabian Nights. As he told William Bell Scott in 1860 when he was finishing The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple , his work on this painting and several other Oriental subjects might temporarily exhaust what he termed his "oriental mania," but his vocation as a painter would not let him stay in England for long: "I cannot believe that Art should let such beautiful things pass as are in this age passing for good in the East without exertion to chronicle them for the future, and I promise myself to return in spirit to the land of good Haroun Alraschid if I can't get there in body before the present year is out" (signed autograph letter, February 18(?), 1860; London; Troxell Collection, Princeton University). The painter's words well capture the complex attraction that this part of the world had for him. At the same time that he felt the urge to play the historian, anthropologist, and ethnographer and thus record the facts of life in these countries, he also indulged the romantic desire to enter the magic realm of the

Building Self-esteem
by William Stewart
Preface
My interest in self-esteem has developed over the years as a counsellor, as I observed that almost all people who come for counselling are, at the time, suffering from a lowered self-esteem. I have identified three groups of people with different types of self-esteem problems. Firstly there are those who are normally confident and self-assertive, and would have rated their self-esteem as high, but show indications of their self-esteem having taken a knock. This led me to propose that self-esteem is not a fixed quality of personality. It is not like the colour of one’s eyes, or one’s height. Rather, it is more fragile, like our body which can be attacked by a multitude of invaders to make us feel sick and below par. Events come along which attack even the strongest person and lower their self-esteem. For such people, once the event or circumstance has been dealt with, self-esteem returns to its previous level, or even higher; for having successfully dealt with a crisis of confidence, they feel the stronger. The second group are those who have a consistently low self-esteem, who never think of themselves as having any worth. These are people whose self-esteem has never been fostered; who from the moment they were born received more negative inputs than positive; who feel that they are nothing more than an encumbrance. Chronically low self-esteem acts like a dark filter on a camera; life never seems to have any joy or brilliance.

William Dembski - Self-Disclosive Design (SDD) as an ID Research Program Pages:
Posted by William A. Dembski (Member # 7) on 14 March 2002, 17:53:
In a recent speaking tour of Canadian universities, I met with a colleague who works in bioinformatics. He described some research of his that holds exceptional promise for ID. I shall leave him unnamed because this research is at the beginning stages and also because ID researchers who are publicly identified as such face enormous pressures. Briefly, what this researcher found was that even though DNA sequence information coding for a given protein within a given organism appears to give no information about the folding of that protein, by looking at an array of homologous DNA sequences for the same protein type across multiple organisms does give reliable 3-dimensional information about the folding of the protein (he has published some preliminary results here). This is remarkable because on a Darwinian hypothesis, evolution cobbles together organisms and their various components, so homolous structures should not give any information about deep underlying design plans. Yet, that is what seems to be happening here the evolutionary phylogeny holds information about the underlying design. It is as though biology is not only rife with design but with self-disclosive design, in which the design assists in discovering the method of design. Alternatively, the design comes with a "design manual" thrown in for good measure.

Human Personality The Subliminal self. Sir william Barrett FRS -. What apiece of work is a man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty . . .
http://www.survivalafterdeath.org/articles/barrett/personality.htm
ARTICLES Sir William Barrett FRS Professor of Physics at the Royal College of Science for Dublin from 1873-1910 and one of the distinguished early psychical researchers. In fact, it was Barrett who first initiated the founding of both the American and British Society for Psychical Research. Human Personality: The Subliminal Self - Sir William Barrett FRS - "What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty . . . in apprehension how like a god!"
Hamlet II., 2. OUR CONSCIOUSNESS is the fundamental fact, the most real thing, of which we are aware, and although it consists of a succession of states of mind, no two of which are exactly alike, it is nevertheless combined into a continuous personal identity which we call "ourself." Even when there are interruptions of our self-consciousness, as in sleep, we recognise the self that wakes up in the morning as the same self that went to sleep overnight. So also throughout our life we are conscious of the same identity, the same self, albeit the whole material of body, brain and sensory organs has been repeatedly swept away and renewed. Hence our personality is not a mere bundle of loose sensations: no succession of states of mind, no series of thoughts or feelings can fuse themselves into a single resultant consciousness, with a knowledge and memory of all the other states.
