81. MESMERISM AND THE HIGHER SELF; A Theosophical Article By William Q. Judge
the views expressed by the author of that work some years ago in Transactions ofthe London Lodge on the subject of the higher self, as may be william BREHON.
http://www2.whidbey.com/TheosophicalLiterature/jmesmerismhigherself.htm
MESMERISM AND THE HIGHER SELF
Recently a book on the subject of the "Rationale of Mesmerism" having been published in London, written by Mr. A. P. Sinnett, I read in it some astounding statements about the relation of the higher self to Mesmerism. He says that it is the higher self that acts in the case of those mesmerized subjects who show clairvoyance, clairaudience, and the like, of a high order. That is to say, the views expressed amount to the doctrine that pure spirit, which the Higher Self is, can be acted on and affected by the gross physical power of mesmerism. This idea seems to be quite contrary to all that we have read in Theosophical literature on the philosophy of man and his complex nature. For if there is anything clearly stated in that, it is that the higher self cannot be affected in this manner. I T is a part of the supreme spirit, and as such cannot be made to go and come at the beck of a mesmerizer. Mesmeric force is purely material, although of a finer sort of materiality than gas. It is secreted by the physical body in conjunction with the astral man within, and has not a particle of spirituality about it further than that spirit is immanent in the whole universe. And when it is brought to bear on the willing or unwilling subject, the portion of the nature of the latter which is waked up, or rather separated from the rest, is the astral man. Clairvoyance and similar phenomena are explicable by the knowledge of the inner man, and, that being so, it is straining a point and degrading a great idea to say the higher self is involved. For the inner astral man has the real organs which partially function through the one we know. The real eye and ear are there. So what happens in mesmeric trance is that the outer eye and ear are paralyzed for the time, and the brain is made to report what is seen and heard by the inner senses.

Out and About:
The main town in the area is the bustling Fort William from where the magical 'Road to the Isles' heads west to the fishing port of Mallaig. On the way, you'll be treated to spectacular views of the Small Isles: Muck, Eigg and Rhum. Also found here are crystal clear bays near Arisaig and the golden sands of Morar. Glen Coe means many things to different people. Historically, the 1692 massacre of the MacDonalds by the Campbells is commemorated by a monument and visitor centre near the Clachaig Inn. For walkers and climbers, Glen Coe offers its own special challenges. Skiers can choose between the White Corries ski area near Glen Coe and Aonach Mor, just north of Fort William, while cyclists can explore the recently developed Great Glen Cycle Route. For a more leisurely day, why not take a trip out to Ardnamurchan Point, the most westerly point on the British mainland?
Historic Buildings and Castles:
Glenfinnan Monument A superb setting at the head of Loch Shiel for the monument commemorating those who fought and died in the Jacobite rising.

Seminar on Self Constructs (EDS 771G)
Week 2 - William James on the Self
Division of Educational Studies - Emory University

1. It is not difficult to become captivated by James' conception of "self as knower and self as known." After all, the distinction of self in terms of I and me is in some fashion common-sensical ("I was talking to myself yesterday and . . . "). On other levels it is also charming and amusing. However, Bandura (in press) has pointed out that "reflecting on one's own functioning entails shifting the perspective of the same agent rather than reifying different internal agents or selves regulating each other." Bandura argues that people think, act, and reflect on their actions, but it is the one and the same person who is doing the thinking and later evaluating the adequacy of one's knowledge, thinking skills, and action strategies. The shift in perspective does not transform one from an agent to an object as the dualist view of the self would lead one to believe. One is just as much an agent reflecting on one's experiences as in executing courses of action. Rather than splitting the self into object and agent, in self-reflection individuals are simultaneously agent and object. James suggests that "the total self of me, being as it were

What is meant by 'self'...... William W. Brown William Wells Brown, was born on this date in 1814. He was an African American antislavery lecturer; groundbreaking novelist, playwright, and historian.
Brown was born on a plantation outside Lexington, Kentucky, to a white father and a slave mother. Brown became free on New Year's Day, 1834, when he was able to slip away from his owners' steamboat while it was docked in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Soon, Brown moved to Buffalo, New York, and spent nine years there working simultaneously as a steam boatman on Lake Erie and as a conductor for the Underground Railroad. In 1843 Brown began lecturing on his experiences in slavery for the Western New York Anti-Slavery Society, one of many American abolitionist groups. Brown eventually also became a lecturer on behalf of women's rights and temperance, but it was as a fugitive slave speaking on the evils of slavery that he was best known.
In 1847, Brown wrote the Narrative of himself

William Buckley Quotes Himself in Self-Defense
Posted Thursday, July 1, 1999, at 8:00 PM PT
Last week, William F. Buckley Jr. read a Slate "Book Club" about his latest novel, The Redhunter: A Novel Based on the Life and Times of Senator Joe McCarthy , and decided enough was enough. One of the Clubbers, Eric Alterman, had called Buckley's book "a lumbering, themeless pudding of a novel that forces one's eyelids shut like an invisible vise." The other, Ronald Radosh, had described it as "heavy and plodding, without any real juice to it." Buckley weighed in, defending his work against all charges aesthetic, historical, and ideological, and quoting a critic writing in Buckley's own National Review who deemed the book "wonderfully readable ... a witty, fast-moving yarn." Now Buckley has asked Slate to run the following excerpt from the book, so that readers can judge for themselves. We are delighted to oblige. Chapter 45 Acheson Collects McCarthyana Day after day, week after week, month after month, the folder grew in size. The methodical Mr. Acheson took to classifying the entries according to his estimate of their ranking. "M-O-3" parsed as "McCarthy-Outrageous-At 3rd level." "M-P-1" parsed as "McCarthy-Preposterous-1st level." He had other categories, including T (for

William Bennett Chases His Tail
Self-criticism is bad for us, good for them.
By Timothy Noah
Posted Monday, April 15, 2002, at 3:22 PM PT
What makes Western civilization superior to Islamic civilization? Its capacity for self-criticism, argues William Bennett. And what threatens to cripple Western civilization as it wages war against the Islamic world? Its penchant for self-criticism. Most of the fun in reading William Bennett's new book, Why We Fight: Moral Clarity and the War on Terrorism , comes from watching Bennett try to reconcile these two opposing ideas. Here, for instance, is Bennett closing in on synthesis like a cat chasing its own tail: [T]he habit of self-criticism, which some in the West have admittedly made into a self-destructive fetish, also happens to be the one irreplaceable engine of human progress. If, as we have been assured, moderates really do outnumber extremists in the Muslim world, if they really do not wish to relegate themselves to the extremists' enclaves, and if they really do aspire to enjoy the benefits of a free society, then they will have to stand up and begin the arduous work of reconstruction from within by criticizing, criticizing, criticizing … How much self-criticism is enough, and how much is too much? It depends on who's doing the self-criticizing. In the West, Bennett argues, a surfeit of self-criticism brought undeserved grief down on Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi after he said in late September that "We [i.e., the West] must be aware of the superiority of our civilization" in comparison to the Islamic world. The West
