Robert W Service (1874 - 1958) Born in Preston, Lancashire, in January 1874 of a Scots father and English mother, Robert Service spent most of his formative childhood years in the Ayrshire town of Kilwinning where his father was born and his grandfather was the town's first Postmaster. His great-great-grandfather, Alexander Service, according to family lore ... "achieved the distinction of getting drunk in Irvine with Robert Burns". His early years in Kilwinning were brief but he certainly remembered them and gives a none too flattering picture of the dour place it was for him in his autobiography where he styles it "... the long grey town". A notch on one of the pews of the parish church is pointed out as where he whiled away the time during a once too long sermon! The only hint of a future career as one of the world's leading poets came on his sixth birthday when Service wrote, what he later described as his "first poetic flutter", God bless the cakes and bless the jam;

Born: January 16, 1874, in Preston, Lancashire, England Died: September 11, 1958, in Monte Carlo Robert W. Service was a Canadian author who earned a reputation as "the poet of the Yukon Gold Rush" for poems such as The Shooting of Dan McGrew. He was the oldest son in a family of ten born to Robert Service Sr., a banker, and Emily Parker Service, daughter of a cotton mill owner. He spent his childhood in Scotland and joined the Commercial Bank of Scotland before emigrating to Canada in 1897. His vision of Canada included cowboys on a wild frontier, and therefore, he dressed like Buffalo Bill while traveling to his destination. Although he worked on a ranch on Vancouver Island, he returned to banking in 1903. He was transferred to the Yukon in 1904, but never participated in the gold rush. His writing career was inspired by his conversations as a banker with his customers. The information gathered from these gold diggers form the basis of his first three works: Songs of the Sourdough, The Spell of the Yukon, and Ballads of a Cheechako.

Robert W Service Think of an Ayrshire poet named Robert who has a global following and whose fame has survived his death. Think of a poet whose fans hold a celebratory dinner each year to enjoy his life and work, and one name Burns springs to mind. However the Alloway born Rabbie died penniless in his mid 30s, while another Ayrshire poet was a multi millionaire living in the south of France when he passed away aged 84 years old. What is more, he wrote the biggest selling poem in history - yet in his home town, he is virtually unknown. His name was Robert W Service , and his life and work is finally getting the recognition it deserves later this year when the people of Kilwinning host a lavish dinner in his name. While Scots around the globe celebrate with a Burns Supper at the end of January each year, in the wild west of Canada the people of Whitehorse gather for a dinner to honour a man they call the Bard of the Yukon. But he was no "cannuck" – for Robert W Service was born in Preston, Lancashire on January 16 th 1874. His father, also called Robert, was from the town of

Special: 2 tickets and room for $99 Special guests will be attending from Kilwinning, Scotland, where Robert Service spent the formative years of his childhood. For more information, contact Doug Bell There wasn't a fus when this fellow came to town. There sure was when he left. He loved life, language, words, and space. In Whitehorse 1904, he became known as "the solitary walker." Nothing pleased him more than losing himself in the "great wild silence" which he was to describe as "the final word in desolation" with an "end-of-the-world feeling." One of his biographers said "all his life, Robert Service was afflicted by a restlessness and a wanderlust that was to take him to the ends of the earth." He stepped on Canadian soil in April 1896 prophetically perhaps, in the year gold was found in the Klondike. He had $15 in his pocket and visions of becoming a cowboy. He roamed the land at will for eight years, ending up broke in Vancouver. His earlier banking experience saved him... the Bank of Commerce in Victoria hired him.

    Robert W. Service
    Robert Service is a famous poet who wrote such legendary pieces as "The Cremation of Sam McGee", "The Spell of the Yukon" and "The Shooting of Dan McGrew". Many of his poems focused on the gold rush, in the Yukon, during the early 1900's. " A bunch of the boys were whooping it up at the Malamute Saloon;
    The kid that hankles the music box was hitting a jag-time tune;
    Back of the bar, in a solo game, sat Dangerous Dan McGrew,
    And watching his luck was his light-o'love,
    the lady that's known as Lou
    ."
    The Shooting of Dan McGrew, by Robert W. Service Service's first collected works, "Songs of a Sourdough' was published in 1907. In 1909, "Ballads of a Cheechako" appeared. They were enormously popular. These rollicking ballads earned him fame throughout Europe as well as the accolade, "The Canadian Kipling." Among his later volumes are "Rymes of a Red Cross Man" (1916) and "Bar Room Ballads" (1940). " The Trail of '98' (1910) is a vivid novel of men and conditions in the Klondike. He also wrote two autobiographical works, 'Ploughman of the Moon' (1945) and "Harper of Heaven" (1948).
