If in its rhythm you can read A music of your own; If in its pale woof you can weave Your lovelier design 'Twill make my lyric, I believe, more yours than mine. I'm but a prompter at the best; crude cues are all I give. In simple stanzas I suggest- 'Tis you who make them live. My bit of rhyme is but a frame, And if my lines you quote, I think, although they bear my name, 'Tis you who wrote. Yours is the beauty that you see in any words I sing;

An ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, Dr. Edgar came to the Council from Claremont Theological School, where he was president from 1990-2000. Dr. Edgar is also well known for his service as a six-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, from 1975-1987. During his distinguished professional life, Dr. Edgar has also served as a pastor at United Methodist congregations, teacher, college chaplain, community organizer, and director of a "think tank" on National Security issues. by Robert W. Service
There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.
Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee, where the cotton blooms and blows.
Why he left his home in the South to roam 'round the Pole, God only knows. He was always cold, but the land of gold seemed to hold him like a spell; Though he'd often say in his homely way that "he'd sooner live in hell." On a Christmas Day we were mushing our way over the Dawson trail. Talk of your cold! through the parka's fold it stabbed like a driven nail. If our eyes we'd close, then the lashes froze till sometimes we couldn't see; It wasn't much fun, but the only one to whimper was Sam MCGee.

The Cremation of Sam McGee - by Robert W. Service
Robert William Service was born in Preston, England in 1874. He emigrated to Canada at the age of twenty where he lived in the Yukon and saw and experienced the difficult times of the miners, trappers, and hunters which he has presented to us in verse. He died in Monte Carlo in 1958. Sam McGee was a real person, a customer at the Bank of Commerce where Service worked. The Alice May was a real boat (the Olive May), a derelict on Lake Laberge. This poem is familiar to anyone who has experienced the bitterness of cold weather and what it can do to a man.

Robert W. Service, Just Another Canadian FTLComm - Dawson City - Wednesday, August 29, 2001
Several times a day each summer an experience actor comes out of the Dawson City, Yukon cabin shown above, the original cabin of poet Robert W. Service and he sits down on a chair on this lawn before a gathering of tourists who sit and stand around the benches inside the picket fence and listen intently to the words of a story teller.
Robert Service was and always will be a Scot, one with a good education and a desire to see the world. The place of action was Dawson City in 1894 when he came to the Yukon and went to work for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Whitehorse. Impressed with the amazing people that were attracted to the gold rush he wrote about them and what they were up to and certainly what they were up against.
Hardly a Milton or a Chaucer Robert Service was a popular writer, a contemporary writer of his time and a truly gifted story teller. The public ate it up and appreciated this clever well spoken Scot and his books sold well with the Ballad of Sam McGrew even becoming a movie.
Before he died in France where lived out the last years of his life in France with his wife and daughter in 1958 service was there in World War I worked as a correspondent and returned to Canada.

The Spell of the Yukon and Other Verses by Robert W. Service To C. M. The Land God Forgot The lonely sunsets flare forlorn
Down valleys dreadly desolate;
The lordly mountains soar in scorn
As still as death, as stern as fate. The lonely sunsets flame and die;
The giant valleys gulp the night;
The monster mountains scrape the sky,
Where eager stars are diamond-bright. So gaunt against the gibbous moon, Piercing the silence velvet-piled, A lone wolf howls his ancient rune The fell arch-spirit of the Wild. O outcast land! O leper land! Let the lone wolf-cry all express The hate insensate of thy hand, Thy heart's abysmal loneliness CONTENTS The Land God Forgot The lonely sunsets flare forlorn, The Spell of the Yukon I wanted the gold, and I sought it, The Heart of the Sourdough There where the mighty mountains bare their fangs unto the moon
