TO MARS BY A-BOMB Wednesday 26 March Listen to an interview with Freeman Dyson YEHUDI MENUHIN "I can only remember wanting to be a musician. I can't remember anything before that" Vikram Seth b1952 Back to audio clips Vikram Seth was born in Calcutta, the son of a shoe company executive and a judge, and educated in India, Oxford University and Stanford University in California. He later studied at Nanking University in China and used his subsequent experiences during a hitchhiking trip from China through Nepal to India to write an award-winning travelogue, From Heaven Lake (1983). Seth's first novel, The Golden Gate (1986), amazed critics with its extraordinary form: it is composed entirely in metred, rhyming 14-line stanzas apparently inspired by a 19th-century translation of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. Within this difficult structure, Seth developed, to remarkably readable effect, a satirical romance describing the lives and preoccupations of a group of young professionals in San Francisco. Seth's second novel, A Suitable Boy (1993), was even more impressive, at least in terms of length. One critic has described it as "three and a half pounds of perfection," while others have compared it to Tolstoy, Balzac, George Eliot and Charles Dickens. Not only its length but its compelling narrative force, strong characterisation and ingeniously interrelated plotting give weight to these judgments. The book describes the efforts of Rupa Mehra, a matriarchal Indian mother, to find a suitable match for her daughter, Lata.

Seth, Vikram Seth, Vikram (1952- ), Indian novelist and poet, who received popular and critical acclaim for his novel A Suitable Boy (1993). The novel, which won one of Britain's annual literary prizes, the W. H. Smith Award, is the story of an Indian mother's search for a suitable match for her daughter, set against the panoramic backdrop of life in India just after its independence from Britain in 1947.
Seth was born in Calcutta to Hindu parents. He was educated at English schools in India prior to attending Corpus Christi College at the University of Oxford, in England. He received a B.A. degree from Oxford; M.A. degrees from Stanford University, in California, and Oxford; and a graduate study diploma from Nanjing University in Eastern China.

Equal parts enjoyment and aggravation. Give it a (brief) try. Format: Novel Genre: Literature Published: Dates read: 2001-10-01 to 2002-07-09 Summary: Vikram Seth's novel is, at its core, a love story: the tale of Lata's—and her mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra's—attempts to find a suitable boy for Lata, through love or through exacting maternal appraisal. Set in the early 1950s in an India newly independent and struggling through a time of crisis, A Suitable Boy takes us into the richly imagined world of four large extended families and spins a compulsively readable tale of their lives and loves. A sweeping panoramic portrait of a complex, multiethnic society in flux, A Suitable Boy remains the story of ordinary people caught up in a web of love and ambition, humor and sadness, prejudice and reconciliation, the most delicate social etiquette and the most appalling violence. Perhaps to atone for the length of the book, this review will be mercifully short. A Suitable Boy is the story of several Indian families whose paths intersect continually over a period of about a year. India has only recently gained its independence from the British, and in his lenthy tome Seth takes us through all the ramifications of that momentous change, from the modern city to the backwards country, and from the political to the intensely personal. But, as the title suggests

The Vikram Seth Chat
'Agar maine Awara Hoon na gaaya hota, to main abhi tak economist rahta'
F or all those of us who stayed awake that night, he was on time. The first thing that strikes you about Vikram Seth, in India to promote his latest novel An Equal Music, is his height, which is of Napoleonic proportions. The writer whom Shobha De predicts will win a Nobel Prize spared more than his promised hour for The Rediff Chat, hosted from New Delhi, and we are pleased to say he enjoyed it as did those who were online with him. The poet and novelist mulled over his answers before keying in his replies. The questions came fast and furious, but Seth kept apace, till time ran out. Happily, he has promised an encore after his next book. Mr Vikram Seth: Hello, I am here for your questions. Natalia: Dear Mr Seth, I really loved A Suitable Boy, which I have just read. I read it in Finnish. Have your other books been translated in Finnish? Mr Vikram Seth: Natalia: I'm afraid that no other novels have been translated into Finnish so far, but An Equal Music

Vikram Seth was born in Calcutta in 1952. He left India to study at Oxford where he earned degrees in philosophy, economics, and politics, and went on to study creative writing at Stanford and classical Chinese poetry in China at Nanjing University.
Vikram Seth has been compared to George Eliot, Leo Tolstoy, and Goethe. His first novel, The Golden Gate, is written entirely in tetrameter sonnets, something that had never been done in the English language before. The Suitable Boy, his prose fiction debut, examined multigenerational Hindu/Muslim conflict in 1950s India and holds the distinction of being the longest single volume ever published in English. But Seth is much more than a literary statistic in the Guinness Book of World Records. Eugene Robinson, a literary critic for the Washington Post called him, "the best writer of his generation." Other critics have compared him to George Eliot, Leo Tolstoy, and Goethe. Since he was first published in 1980, Seth has produced six books of poetry and three novels.

    Books mentioned in this review:
The Humble Administrator's Garden (Carcanet, 1985)
All You Who Sleep Tonight (Knopf, 1990)
    Beastly Tales (Viking, 1991)
The Golden Gate (Random House, 1986) I want a poet, an uncommon wantand the poet wants form, something the uncommon critic will hopefully understand. And maybe Vikram Seth is such a poet. Though he has written poetry for at least two decades, he was unknown to me until the behemoth novel A Suitable Boy weighed in on the literary circuit and bookshelves. I could not acquire all of his poetry books (it seems two decades is now the time limit for books to be out of print...out of date, out of mind), though I was able to find these four. His other works, none of which are reviewed here but which might be worth a look, include more poetry, the novel, a libretto, and travelogues.
But who is this Vikram Seth anyhow? And what a funny name for an English poet. A post-colonial, no doubt. Is his poetry about India? Will there be Odes to the British Raj? Will we be given a feast of epigrams on Mountbatten? Happily, Seth has no such agenda. The biographical sketches included in the books yield some clues about him: Economics and Philosophy at Oxford; travels through China; Stanford, Masters pending (for 10 years!). He is basically a well-educated, cosmopolitan man. The only conclusion one draws about his choice of becoming a writer is that of a possible rebellion against wealthy parents.
