First, of course, there was the oral tradition, where the epics were recited from generation to generation. And then came the written tradition, with a span vast enough to cover everything from profound Indian mysticism and philosophy, to traditional folk lore, sociology, and even medicine, mathematics and the sciences. So tremendous was this outpouring of written words through the ages, that some scholars feel that a life-time devoted to its learning and discovery would merely scratch its surface. But what was, and still is, most impressive, is that the span of this tradition accommodates a diversity of languages that runs into hundreds. From pure, classical Sanskrit, to all its forms and dialects across the region, and even what were once foreign languages like Urdu, and English. So it should come as no surprise that a new crop of post-independence writers, emerging from a relatively small but sad period of two hundred years of British colonialism, should shrug off their colonial hang-over and arrive on the global literary scene. They wield the English language as their own, since they have accepted it as their own, but they have emerged in their own 'write', against the backdrop of their own constantly evolving rich tradition.

Vikram Seth Vikram Seth needs no introduction. Although he is better known for a certain volumnious book that fetched him fame and fortune, I find his verse far better than any of his prose. This poem is from his collection "All You Who Sleep Tonight", the title poem of which was on this list some time ago. What I like about the poem is the simple, elegant form, its ability to convey volumes of emotion with economy of verse and of course, the all too familiar experience it talks about. Vidur. Vikram Seth is better known for his narrative poem the 'Golden Gate'. I like this poem for its simplicity and particularly for its depiction of how a simple thing as a familiar bag can evoke a spate of emotions emanating from a network of memories all tied up to some attachments in the past. In some sense we all feel that we are through with the past and yet some simple event can trigger of an overwhelming sense of reliving those moments. The human psyche has a remarkable ability to retain the emotional contents of events long forgotten. What also come through is the sense of tremendous expectations raised and lowered with a deftness by the poet in the span of the last two lines. Abhijit Padte.

It's not what I imagined a writer's life would be, which was that you write your books and then it's out in the world and whether or not it's a success or failure will emerge over the course of time, maybe some years and then meanwhile you're writing other books. Seven years ago, Vikram Seth broke the wrists of the world's readers with his monumental love story set in India, A Suitable Boy. With an epic set of characters, Seth recreated the whole strange world of the subcontinent. Bruce Chatwin remarked that "(India) will never have its War and Peace." Seth proved him wrong. In his new novel, An Equal Music , Seth has written an exquisite miniature. A first person narrative about the life of a string quartet and the resurrection of a long dead obsessive love. The narrator, Michael, is slightly unstable and somewhat disassociated from the day to day. He sees Julia, his great love from music school, on a passing bus and we're off. While Seth was on tour for his new book, we were lucky to snatch a few minutes over lunch with him. He is tiny, fragile and he was exhausted. But as he spoke his eyes began to sparkle. He revived.
