B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback William Shakespeare (1564-1616) English poet, dramatist, and actor, considered by many to be the greatest dramatist of all time. Some of Shakespeare's plays, such as HAMLET and ROMEO AND JULIET, are among the most famous literary works of the world. Shakespeare was the most popular dramatist of his age. However, his early works did not match the artistic quality of Marlowe's dramas. If he had died on the same year than Marlowe, in 1593, today he perhaps would be considered a minor poet. Shakespeare became the first to appeal and to meet with the full approval of a broad and mixed public embracing almost all levels of society. He possessed a large vocabulary for his day, having used 29,066 different words in his plays. Today the average English-speaking person uses something like 2,000 words in everyday speech. "It may be that the essential thing with Shakespeare is his ease and authority and thay you just have to accept him as he is if you are going to be able to admire him properly, in the way you accept nature, a piece of scenery for example, just as it is." (Ludwig Wittgenstein in Culture and Value William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, a small country town. The black plague killed in 1564 one out of seven of the town's 1,500 inhabitants. Shakespeare was the eldest son of Mary Arden, the daughter of a local landowner, and his husband John Shakespeare (c. 1530-1601), a glover and wood dealer. John Aubrey (1626-1697) tells in

"When I do count the clock that tells the time"
When I do count the clock that tells the time,
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;
When I behold the violet past prime,
And sable curls, all silver'd o'er with white;
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves,
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,
And summer's green all girded up in sheaves,
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard;
Then of thy beauty do I question make,
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake,
And die as fast as they see others grow;
And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defence
Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.

"Vero Nihil Verius"
W elcome to the Shakespeare Oxford Society , the second oldest continuously operating organization (the Bacon Society dates back to 1886) involved in the two-centuries old Shakespeare authorship debate. The purpose of the Society is to document and establish Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (1550-1604), as the universally recognized author of the works of William Shakespeare. The quarterly Shakespeare Oxford Newsletter , annual journal The Oxfordian , and online magazine The Ever Reader carry articles, conference papers and news imparting a wide range of corroborating information and commentary. W does transform one's understanding of the history of this critical period in world history. A l Austin, the writer/producer of the much-watched The Shakespeare Mystery segment of PBS's Frontline , aptly summed up the Shakespeare authorship problem in an article that accompanied the original broadcast in 1989: "Those who believe de Vere was Shakespeare must accept an improbable hoax, a conspiracy of silence involving, among others, Queen Elizabeth herself. Those who side with the Stratford man must believe in miracles." [quote updated 5/14/99]. In short, there is a mystery here. And given the great significance and impact that Shakespeare has had in his own time and in ours, it is a mystery well worth exploring. It can only enhance one's appreciation of Shakespeare, literature, politics and history.

Introduction Top Top I have brought together here all the links to the collected and individual works by Shakespeare available on the Internet. Most are to web editions, but gopher, ftp, and telnet accessible resources have also been linked. The individual editions are listed alphabetically by title. The protocol used to access each work is noted on the left side of the page next to the link in square brackets, if it is not a web document. Any special considerations related to a link are also noted in the same way, such as [$$$], meaning that the link is to a for pay site. In addition to the works, I have included a link to my own chronological listing of the canon , which contains some notes to the plays and issues related to the dating of the plays and poems. There are also links to the Lambs' Tales From Shakespeare (an orignal html edition mounted at this site). Near the bottom of the page I have placed references to Internet available Shakespeare bibliographies (which I call "lists," within which term I include filmographies, videographies, and webliographies). Finally, as an aid to those of you in search of printed editions, I have included links to various book publishers and sellers, with special emphasis on those known for Shakespeare related materials. If you are doing research on the "authorship problem," you will find the links on the
