63. Fiona Macleod/William Sharp
Fiona Macleod/william sharp was one of the early exponents of some ofour inner work. A Short Article on william sharp/Fiona Macleod
http://www.dreampower.com/fiona_macleod.html
A Short Article on
William Sharp/Fiona Macleod
William Sharp And The Esoteric Orders Fiona Macleod/William Sharp was one of the early exponents of some of our inner work. He/she was a member of an esoteric group along with Frederick Bligh Bond (the man who excavated Glastonbury Abbey according to spirit instructions...but that is another story), John Foulds (a remarkable composer), Maud McCarthy (married to Foulds, and protege of Annie Besant) and others. It seems likely that J.A. Goodchild, an expert on British manuscripts and traditions, was a mentor of Bligh Bond, and also involved in magical work. It is likely, but not proven by "official" records, that William Sharp was also a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and was certainly in some similar group involving Golden Dawn members, but it is his link to this more obscure esoteric group (dedicated to the goddess Brigit), based in Glastonbury and London, that passes down to our work. Lest anyone scream for evidence, I have Bligh Bond's private notes describing several visionary events involving Sharp and others, and I also have the original documents describing some of the work done by the group or order in Glastonbury and London, around 1911. (I have also lodged some of these papers with the musicologist and composer Malcolm MacDonald, who is the biographer of John Foulds).

Introduction
This section of the Archive will contain transcriptions of William Sharp’s letters that have been made available to the editor by libraries and private collectors throughout the world. The letters are interesting because of the wide range of people Sharp corresponded with and the topics he addressed. He was a close friend with many of the most important literary people of his age, among them Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Walter Pater, George Meredith, Thomas Hardy, and William Butler Yeats. He also corresponded with firms who published his books and with editors of magazines, journals, and newspapers for which he wrote articles and reviews. The letters will be of interest to individuals interested in literary and publishing activities in Great Britain and the United States in the 1880's and 1890's. In 1894, William Sharp decided to publish a romance set in the western isles of Scotland under a female pseudonym, Fiona Macleod,.

William Sharp's Sospiri di Roma (1891)
Andrew Managravite
illiam Sharp is probably remembered these daysif at allas the original, albeit less adventuresome, Fernando Pessoa. Sharp's sole heteronym was the "Celtic Twilight" poet and dramatist Fiona MacLeod, who, as fate would have it, was more highly regarded as a creative talent that her originator. Nevertheless, Sharp, writing under his own name, was not without his gifts. He was a serviceable, if unimaginative critic. His volume of dramatic sketches Vistas (1894) was the closest that any British writer of his time ever got to creating pure Symbolist theater in the manner of Maeterlinck. Then there are the poems that appeared in his 1891 collection Sospiri di Roma The "Sospiri" poems have never been easy to obtain. The original volume has never, to the best of my knowledge, been reprinted. Sixteen of the poems were selected for inclusion in a 1909 volume Songs and Poems , and this volume is somewhat easier to locate, though it's far from common. However, I suspect it has been reprinted and should be available for study. Sharp has never been an especial favorite of anthologists, and, ironically, the best "advertisement" for these poems has come from a non-literary source, namely, the American composer Charles T. Griffes who transformed several of them into piano and small orchestral sketches. Clearly the composer was drawn to Sharp's Roman dream world, albeit not sufficiently to set his words directly to music. Perhaps Griffes felt that the words, if spoken aloud, contained enough music of their own, and so was content to compose a series of interpretations that can almost serve as accompaniments to the poet's words.

    Peter Lang, July 1996, 126 pp., ISBN: 0-8204-2637-7, $37.95
    Description:
By the time he died in 1905, the Scottish writer William Sharp had succeeded as critic, biographer, poet, and novelist. Writing secretly, he had also achieved fame as Fiona Macleod, a poet singled out by Yeats for "her" role in the Celtic revival. Two important lost works bearing on Sharp's creation of Fiona Macleod are printed here for the first time: "Ariadne in Naxos," a tragedy inspired in part by Swinburne's Atalanta in Calydon, and "Beatrice," an idyllic poem. Terry Meyers introduces both works in the context of Sharp's life, showing how they highlight the sexual uncertainties Sharp felt as he contemplated marriage and also how they foreshadow the birth of Fiona Macleod during the 1890's crisis in masculinity. Meyers uses gay and gender studies to examine Sharp's place in the late Victorian crucible for modern constructions of sexual roles.

WILLIAMSBURG, VA (April 14) The William and Mary football program ended its 15-practice spring drills session this afternoon with a spirited and sharp scrimmage in Zable Stadium in front of a sun-swept crowd of more that 1,000 fans. While the afternoon's action was a controlled scrimmage broken down into four, eight minute quarters with no real team scores being kept, both sides of the ball had its moments. The defense was particularly sharp, especially along the defensive front. Defensive tackle Todd Garland (Reston, VA) led the charge by recording three sacks on the afternoon. In fact, the all-around defense was sound as the offense cracked the scoreboard only four times (a pair of field goals and touchdowns). Senior safety D.J. Alexander (Norfolk, VA) recorded the afternoon's only interception, as he stepped in front of a short pass attempt by freshman QB Lang Campbell (Winchester, VA). Tribe starting QB Dave Corley (Columbia, SC) was sharp in limited action, as he led the first team offense down the field for a field goal on the game's opening drive. The big play came on a third down, where Corley spotted TE Brandon W. Johnson (St. Charles, VA) free behind the secondary for a 30-yard gain, which eventually set up a 32-yard field goal by junior kicker Mike Nagelin (Virginia Beach, VA). The game's first touchdown also came in the first quarter, via the ground, when junior tailback Brandon B. Johnson (Washington, D.C.) burst over left tackle and out raced the defense for a 35-yard scoring sprint.
