TO GEORGE R. HALKETT MY DEAR HALKETT More years ago than either of us cares to recall, we were both, in the same dismal autumn for us, sent wandering from our native land in Scotland to the ends of the earth. I remember that each commiserated the other because of that doctor's doom in which we both, being young and foolish, believed. Since then we have sailed many seas and traversed many lands, and I, at least, have the wayfaring fever too strong upon me ever to be cured now. At times, however, one not only returns to one's own country, but to the familiar lands of Literary Geography, where, since we were boys, we have so often fared with never-failing gladness and content. Some of these wayfarings, set in the steadfastness of print, are now chronicled in this book; and to whom better could I dedicate it than to you, who are at once editorially its godfather and the old-time and valued friend of THE AUTHOR CONTENTS PART I THE COUNTRY OF STEVENSON

    A Short Article on
    William Sharp/Fiona Macleod
William Sharp And The Esoteric Orders Fiona Macleod/William Sharp was one of the early exponents of some of our inner work. He/she was a member of an esoteric group along with Frederick Bligh Bond (the man who excavated Glastonbury Abbey according to spirit instructions...but that is another story), John Foulds (a remarkable composer), Maud McCarthy (married to Foulds, and protege of Annie Besant) and others. It seems likely that J.A. Goodchild, an expert on British manuscripts and traditions, was a mentor of Bligh Bond, and also involved in magical work. It is likely, but not proven by "official" records, that William Sharp was also a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and was certainly in some similar group involving Golden Dawn members, but it is his link to this more obscure esoteric group (dedicated to the goddess Brigit), based in Glastonbury and London, that passes down to our work. Lest anyone scream for evidence, I have Bligh Bond's private notes describing several visionary events involving Sharp and others, and I also have the original documents describing some of the work done by the group or order in Glastonbury and London, around 1911. (I have also lodged some of these papers with the musicologist and composer Malcolm MacDonald, who is the biographer of John Foulds).

Invention of "the Celtic" as a racial within the colonising country itself, Great Britain. Compare this essay to Scottish Enlightenment attitudes to the Highlands in eg. Waverley. There, Gaelic-language culture understood as representing a past stage of society, the historical past of our own modernity, indeed. As such, it is the source of various virtues, aesthetic ( Ossian ) and military (The Black Watch, and then the Highland regiments raised by Pitt for the wars with revolutionary France), which can be appropriated by the modern world; but the social order in which they originate is itself doomed, and indeed these virtues are only available for appropriation in the aftermath of the military and political defeat (conceived by Enlightenment stadial history as inevitable) of Highland society as an autonomous political entity in 1746 and its aftermath.

    William Sharp MacLeay (1792-1865)
English naturalist. MacLeay is best know for his "quinarian" doctrine of biological classification, which held that all organisms could be arranged in hierarchically ordered, circular sets of five taxa. This explicitly non-evolutionary and anti- Lamarckian system was compatible with a Creationist view of nature and was widely discussed when Darwin was a young man. MacLeay's taxonomic circles were held together by "affinities," which he opposed to misleading functional "analogies" (1823); following MacLeay closely, Owen coined the term "homology" for the former (1843). Chambers also was influenced by quinarianism, writing a whole chapter on the theory. MacLeay developed his ideas while working in the laboratories of Cuvier in the late 1810s. MacLeay was primarily an entomologist, but he also published on other groups like birds and fossil marsupials. In 1836 MacLeay emigrated to Australia, returning to London in 1836-37 (where he met Darwin Huxley visited with MacLeay in Sydney in 1848, and had an influence on Huxley's ideas throughout the 1850s. http://www.nobel.se/economics/laureates/1990/sharpe-autobio.html
I was born on June 16, 1934 in Boston, Massachusetts. At that time my parents had completed their undergraduate educations - my father in English literature, my mother in science. My father was then employed at Harvard University , working in the placement office.
In 1940, world events led to the activation of my father's National Guard unit and a move to Texas. The subsequent outbreak of World War II required further moves to northern California and finally to southern California.
The majority of my pre-college education was completed in the public schools of Riverside, California, which were excellent. I benefitted there from stimulating teachers and challenging curricula.
In 1951 I enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley, with a plan to major in science en route to a medical degree. A year of the associated courses convinced me that my preferences lay elsewhere. To change both curriculum and locale I transferred to the University of California at Los Angeles with a declared major in Business Administration.
