COMPANY HISTORY
The David Sherman Corporation (DSC) was established in 1958 by Paul A. Lux and David Sherman, Sr. Mr. Sherman had owned and operated a chain of wholesale liquor distributors in Arkansas and Missouri. To service the needs of those distributors, as well as other wholesalers and retailers, he founded a private label bottler that became DSC. In the years following our inception,we began to branch out in an effort to expand from our base as a private label bottler. DSC began to market and promote several brands that had originally been limited to small markets, but appeared to have national potential. One of these brands, Juarez Tequila, is one of the top selling tequila brands in the United States today.
In addition to creating and promoting our own brands, DSC made its

(Vanderbilt University, 1987) Email: dsherman@u.washington.edu With about one-third of the world population infected and nearly three million deaths annually, Mycobacterium tuberculosis is arguably the world's most successful human pathogen. My laboratory focuses on the molecular strategies that contribute to this success. Our research has helped to define the molecular and biochemical response of M. tuberculosis to oxidative stress and to drugs such as isoniazid. We discovered that M. tuberculosis lacks the classic inducible response to oxidative stress that is mediated in other bacteria by the transcription factor OxyR, and have shown how isoniazid resistant bacilli that have lost activity of the catalase-peroxidase KatG frequently augment their damaged oxidative defense system via mutations that enhance expression of the alternate peroxidase AhpC. In the course of this work, we helped show that the recently proposed target for isoniazid action (termed InhA) is almost certainly incorrect. In addition, I have adapted a powerful new differential expression technology to the study of bacterial gene expression. The speed and sensitivity of this procedure create new opportunities for any research program with a differential expression component. I am interested in applying these and other research tools to two formerly intractable areas of M. tuberculosis

Arlington Chess Club WBCA Tournament of Champions Photos from the past.... The Arlington Chess Club WBCA Tournament of Champions is an annual series of monthly WBCA qualifying events which seed one player each month into a Championship round-robin event on the second Friday in December. It is a closed, invitational event with no EF and prizes of $100-$50 and bragging rights for a year as ACC Club Blitz Champ. SM Alex Reprintsev entered the tournament as the clear favorite. Rated 2521, he had won or tied every tournament he had played in and was rated in the top 40 WBCA players in the world. He was scheduled to start at the bottom of the crosstable and work his way up to the four toughest pairings: NM's Macon Shibut Fred Garcia Matt Morgan and David Sherman Alex entered round 11 with a perfect 10-0 score and was playing the #2 man Dave Sherman, who could catch and pass him with a win, having garnered an impressive 9.5 -.5 score himself. A crowd gathered around and watched the match for the club title. Reprintsev, as white, played 1.e4 and Dave responded with 1....e5.. What followed was one of the more exciting finishes to both a game and a tournament that this writer has ever seen. In the positionto the right, with each player down to about 2 minutes, Sherman uncorked a classic shot that was difficult to handle in a blitz game. Dave went on to win the game and the title and saw his blitz rating jump from 2327 to 2416. Be sure to check out coverage of this event in the June, 1996 issue of
