War For The Oaks trailer (directed by Will Shetterly, 1995) "Eddi McCandry, the Seelie Court goes to war, and needs the presence of mortal blood to bring death to its enemies." From War For The Oaks , The Phouka summing up why they need Eddi McCandry, unemployed musician-at-large. In 1987, Emma Bull's now-classic tale of urban fantasy, War For The Oaks , was published. In brief, it's the story of a woman, her band, and the warring courts of Faerie, who seek Eddi's aid in waging a war to see who'll control Minneapolis for the foreseeable future. A full review of this novel may be found elsewhere on this site. What we're concerned with is what came eight years later. On her own, Emma Bull is a talented writer, songwriter, and musician. She's earned fame and accolades for her stunningly beautiful and bold tales of fantasy and science fiction, and for her tenure in two musical endeavors, Minneapolis-based band Cats Laughing , and as one half of the duo the Flash Girls. On her own, she's a force to be reckoned with.

will shetterly, Dogland (Tor, 1997). As a child, shetterly apparently lived inthe real Dogland, established, as was the one in the novel, in Florida.
http://www.greenmanreview.com/dogland.html
Will Shetterly, Dogland (Tor, 1997) A former candidate for governor of Minnesota (unsuccessful), co-editor (with wife Emma Bull) of the Liavek series of books, Will Shetterly is also an author in his own right, with five previous novels under his belt. The best known of these are likely Elsewhere and Neverwhere , both set in the fantasy world Borderland. His sixth novel, Dogland , is equal parts coming of age story, history lesson and fantasy. As a child, Shetterly apparently lived in the real Dogland, established, as was the one in the novel, in Florida. While there's a danger in assuming the book to be a fictionalized account of those years (ages four to ten for both Shetterly and four to eight for his protagonist and narrator, Mark Christopher Nix), I would hazard a guess that some of his childhood's triumphs and losses found their way into Shetterly's prose. Then too there is the premise of Dogland: a tourist attraction featuring one hundred different breeds of dogs, many foreign and exotic, especially to insular 1960s Florida. Even though based on reality, such an attraction seems fantastical and somewhat quaint by today's standards. Odder still are some of Dogland's visitors (aside from the average Floridian tourists) that Chris remembers among them, four cleverly disguised Norse gods and two travellers with a three-legged dog. Chris needn't even go further than his neighbors to find magic, though he never does make the connection between Ms. DeLyon and her Fountain of Youth hotel and springs, and the Lady of the Lake in the Arthurian tales his friend Mr. Drake tells him (let alone the connection to Ponce de Leon). Looming even larger and more ominously than anyone else is Mr. Nick Lumiere, who dresses all in white and possesses a literally fiendish entrepreneurial spirit.

    Chimera
    by Will Shetterly, 2000
Review by Eva Wojcik-Obert In Chimera, Will Shetterly boldly takes the private dick genre into the future with intelligence, humor, and delightfully colorful characters. In a human-dominated world serviced by artificial intelligence and human-animal hybrids swaggers Chase Maxwell, private investigator, complete with an Infinity Pocket which beats any Swiss Army knife hands down for just plain usefulness in tight situations. Yeah, drool all you want, 007, sorry this cool pocket equipped with one no-need-to-reload gun isn’t in Q’s catalog for you. Shetterly smoothly employs Maxwell as narrator and in so doing creates a classy and indulgently fun literary incarnation of a film noir plot. A human/jaguar chimera named Zoe Domingo kicks the action ball into the field, and Shetterly keeps the ball in play with sweet skill and finesse to the very end of the plot’s game time. It’s not exactly love at first sight for Chase and Zoe when they first meet in a casino, but it is memorable:

Luke Nix, the owner, hires some workers to get the place cleaned up and make some repairs. It isn't long before Dogland is open and it becomes a big success! But then Luke Nix and his workers start to run into some unsympathetic locals. The problem is that Ethorne Hawkins, one of Dogland's workers, is black and, at that time, white people didn't like black people having jobs they felt belonged to them.
Soon the racial problems cause Dogland to lose business, especially when another tourist attraction opens up in the same town. Will white people start treating black people better, or will the Klu Klux Klan run the Nix family out of business?
I liked this book because it tells what happened in America in the late 1950's and early 1960's, and because it had a lot of dogs in it. How would you have felt if you were the Nix family or one of the workers? If you like reading books about animals, read this book to find out what happens to Dogland, the workers, and the Nix family!

DOGLAND by Will Shetterly (Tor 1997 pp448 $25.95)
    a review by L J Hurst
I read DOGLAND waiting for the fantasy to begin. The cover suggests that this tale of young Christopher Nix and his family opening a new theme park in Florida in the late 1950s will also pass on the stories of some of their new neighbours. These include Ethorne Hawkins, "an ageless black man", and Mrs DeLyon, who is trying to save the Fountain of Youth. The Fountain of Youth, though, is another roadside attraction, and Ethorne is a hired-hand with a tendency to go off drinking. DOGLAND is told through the eyes of Kit Nix, and as a child's view of the end of the old south, and the last battles against integration, it shows another side of America. It also reverses the image of the outsider - this is Florida the holiday resort before Disney got there; say, a little like holidaying in Spain before Generalissimo Franco took to his bed. Kit's father wants to run his theme park - where every variety of dog in the world can be seen - but he is a Northerner, a liberal, and an opponent of church teaching in schools. Luke Nix, according to the good ole boys in the neighbourhood, is asking for a stomping, and though things end in a mess, Luke avoids having the boot put in. His son is there at his side when it happens. His son has let out the dogs, who help to keep things under control. According to the author's biography "Will Shetterly lived in Florida from the ages of four to seven, while his father and mother built and managed the real Dog Land". In his novel Shetterly has taken the space out - in some places time shoots by, and we get info dumps of what is happening in the world. Oddly, though, Kit's eye remains neutral - his father never persuades him to be liberal, to be atheistic, to be like Him. Even when the Klan come Kit never breaks down. His camera eye is almost that of an alien.

In the future of Will Shetterly's Chimera , genetic engineering has reached the point where human and animal genes can be mixed to produce chimeras, beings that are nearly human, but retain some of the qualities of the animal species from which they were bred. Popularly known as "critters," chimeras must bear tattoos declaring what animal they were bred from because they are slaves and dangerous slaves at that, for there is always the danger that a chimera will "werewolf" or suddenly go insane and attack anything that moves. Private investigator Chase Maxwell meets Zoe Domingo when she interrupts a poker game at the casino Wonderland. She wants to hire him. Not realizing that she is a critter, he accepts her case. Zoe has been accused of murdering her foster mother, Dr. Janna Gold. She wants Maxwell to find the real murderer. But rather than answers, Maxwell's investigation turns up only more questions. What was the earring that Dr. Gold was carrying and that Zoe took from the murder scene? Why are so many chimeras suddenly werewolfing with no apparent provocation? Who created the murderous androids carrying artificial intelligences and who is reprogramming police robots? And when Maxwell is framed for the murder of Amos Tauber, who was about to tell them why Dr. Gold was traveling to Los Angeles in the first place, he and Zoe find themselves on the run, with no one to turn to except enigmatic and reclusive scientist Mycroft. But then Maxwell is killed, and all hell really breaks loose!

    http://www.rambles.net/shetterly_dog.html
    Will Shetterly,
    Dogland
    (Tor, 1997)
Will Shetterly turns from the urban fantasy of his Borderlands books Elsewhere and Nevernever to Dogland , a much more complex and subtle work of mythic fiction. Chris Nix is 4 when his family moves to Florida, where his parents, Luke and Susan, plan to build Dogland, a tourist attraction featuring every breed of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club. Their first friend is Artie Drake, the realtor who sells Luke the property in spite of a nasty encounter with a rattlesnake. Soon enough, other friends enter their lives: Maggie DeLyon, owner of the Fountain of Youth Motel; Gideon Shale, evangelical proprietor of a hamburger stand who dispenses quotes from the Bible and Shakespeare with his 19-cent burgers; Ethorne Hawkins, an elderly black cook; and Mayella, James and Seth, members of Ethorne's family. Luke Nix practices colorblind hiring and refuses to segregate the restaurant that goes along with Dogland; consequently, he draws a lot of negative attention, particularly from the Ku Klux Klan. At the same time, Dogland seems blessed by some benevolent spirit, because it attracts a steady stream of visitors. Eventually, though, things start to go awry when local developer Nick Lumiere sets up a rival attraction and makes a bid for both the Fountain of Youth and Dogland properties. Lumiere is the kind of businessman who will stop at nothing and will use people to achieve his ends, but he does not count on the love and loyalty surrounding the Nix family.

Review Shetterly, Will. Elsewhere Will Shetterly has written a fantastic novel of magic, sci-fi, and punk rock. Imagine a place where magic and technology mix with some very interesting results. A place where elves, humans, and the crossbreed halfies intermingle in a sometimes hostile environment. Then throw in the fact that this place is run by gangs of wild teens. Welcome to Bordertown, the setting of Elsewhere . A place located between the human world and the Elflands. Bordertown is a place for teens to start a new life on their own. Teens from both sides of the border. Will Shetterly has successfully mixed modern teenage life with magic and fantasy. The book is very well written and most enjoyable. The book's target audience is teenagers. The novel allows kids to imagine themselves in the magic city, running wild and having a blast. I believe any teenager would love reading this book. Younger kids may enjoy it but due to some of the language and themes I would not recommend it to kids under the age of eleven. If you enjoyed this also read: NeverNever by Will Shetterly

    by Will Shetterly
Tor Books, July 2000, ISBN 0312866305
A book review by Elisabeth Carey
This completely different from the last Shetterly book I read, Dogland Chimera is a hard-boiled detective novel, which happens to be set some decades in the future, in a USA that's much more legally fragmented than now, with genetically engineered "critters", human/animal mixes who are property in most states, and artificial intelligences who also don't have much in the way of rights, and want them, and indentured servitude which is open to anyone, including critters who don't happen to have owners already. Chase Maxwell is a private detective in Los Angeles, in the state of South California, and he has the usual checkered past. (Okay, maybe being a cashiered ex-officer of the UN Security Forces who did most of his service in the trouble spots of the USA is a little bit unusual.) His generally comfortable, if somewhat money-strapped at present, life gets entirely too interesting when a jaguar-woman named Zoe Domingo hires him to investigate the murder of her human employer (not owner; they're from Minnesota, which passed a critter rights bill), for which she is the chief suspect. Much excitement ensues, including murder, mayhem, and nefarious political schemes. Great fun.
