Prince Zaleski
by MP Shiel
Tartarus Press
Admired by Arthur Machen and H.P. Lovecraft for attaining an ethereal wedding of cosmic awe and poetic unease beyond the grasp of his peers, M.P. Shiel (1865-1947) is an author whose lyrical, emotionally-charged style proved the perfect aesthetic vehicle with which to express ideas both grandiose and macabre. Author of around 25 novels and dozens of short stories, including ornamental mysteries, exotic adventures, scientific romances, supernatural horror, and the grotesque detective narratives which this review concerns itself with, Shiel, a great thinker whose eyes looked into the soul even as they gazed towards ethereal heavens (lending a sense of dual mysticism and earthly relevance to his fantasies), interwove philosophical and sociological discourse into carefully structured labyrinths of language. Prince Zaleski , an impressive, attractive offering to the macabre enthusiast's library, presents ample evidence of the title character's decadent mysticism and Shiel's prowess as a stylist, building torrents of acrobatic logic and emotional overflow with solidly layered, carefully sequenced building-blocks of description and pacing. Featuring the three tales which comprised Shiel's original collection, including "The Race Or Orven", "The Stone Of The Edmundsbury Monks", and "The S.S.", the Tartarus edition follows Shiel's single work with the posthumously published "collaborations" conducted by John Gawsworth, who re-worked the outlines of further Zaleski tales in Shiel's papers, resulting in the equally fine if somewhat less decadent

The Purple Cloud
by M. P. Shiel
First published 1901
What's up with that?
Adam Jeffson is the only survivor of a Polar expedition gone disastrously wrong. While sailing back, he discovers that a plague has wiped out everybody on Earth; the planet is covered by a thin layer of purple dust. Adam (nice name, eh?) wanders around the ruins of Europe, alone, for the better part of 100 pages. At one point he couples up eight carriages to a locomotive engine and tools around England. He builds a palace in Vauclaire, and while building it, he abandons the journal he has been keeping, to resume it 17 years later. With absolute power and absolute autonomy, he can let the good and the evil aspects (and he's not an especially honorable man) of his personality run rampant, and he becomes quite insane. While wandering around Turkey, he encounters a young woman who was apparently an infant during the Purple Cloud and has never seen another human being. He teaches her how to speak English. Near the end of the book, he decides that he has to kill her, but doesn't – she attempts to kill herself, but he musters his surgical skills to save her – and they get "married" shortly afterward.

Prince Zaleski and Cummings King Monk by M.P. Shiel Reintroduce yourself to another classic author of Arkham House; M.P. Shiel. We have found some excellent reviews by the readers of his day. We'd like to share those with you. Matthew Phipps Shiel (1865-1947) began life in the West Indies of Irish parentage and later studied languages and medicine in London, before the appearance of his first book PRINCE ZALESKI, in 1895. He subsequently wrote over thirty novels including such classic works as THE LORD OF THE SEA, THE YELLOW DANGER, HOW THE OLD WOMAN GOT HOME, and his science fiction masterpiece, THE PURPLE CLOUD. Shiel’s shorter macabre fiction, collected in Arkham House’s XELUCHA AND OTHERS, embraces several of the finest weird tales written during the present century, and compellingly evinces the fanciful imagination and magical command of the English language possessed by this Grand Viscount of the Grotesque. Here's what they said about Prince Zaleski and Cummings King Monk:
Prince Zaleski: "Mr. M. P. Shiel has in this volume produced something which is always rare, and which is every year becoming a greater rarity - a work of literary invention characterized by substantial novelty. We have Poe's analysis and Poe's glamour, but they are no longer distinct; they are combined in a new synthesis which stamps a new imaginative impression. A finely wrought structure in which no single line impairs the symmetry and proportion. One of the most boldly planned and strikingly executed stories of its kind which has appeared for many a long day. We believe there is nothing in Prince Zaleski which that great inventor and masterly manipulator of the spoils of invention (Poe) would have disdained to father." - Daily Chronicle.

Tartarus Press Prince Zaleski by M.P. Shiel Arguably the most decadent of all fictional sleuths, Prince Zaleski relies upon the methods of ratiocination so beloved of Sherlock Holmes. But unlike his deer-stalkered colleague, Zaleski rarely needs even to leave his divan to solve the perplexing mysteries brought before him by Shiel. Rather than give crude chase to the perpetrators of these sophisticated crimes, Zaleski reclines elegantly in his semi-ruined abbey, ‘a bizarrerie of half-weird sheen and gloom,’ smoking hashish and fashioning solutions from his encyclopedic knowledge of the esoteric. Although he is in this respect akin to Edgar Allan Poe’s detective, Auguste Dupin, Zaleski is primarily an up-to-the-minute 1890s aesthete, prompting one critic to suggest that he is based on that tragically extravagant poet of death, Count Eric Stenbock. Prince Zaleski contains the three tales originally collected in John Lane’s Keynotes edition, (1893) along with three further stories, one unfinished, which represent later ‘collaborations’ with the poet, writer and literary researcher John Gawsworth. Brian Stableford provides an illuminating Introduction to the twilight world of Prince Zaleski, and R.B. Russell’s Note explains the genesis of the three stories written with John Gawsworth.

BOOK REVIEW: The Purple Cloud 2 (in Japanese) 3 (in Italian) 6 (in French)
A review by Georges T. Dodds M.P. Shiel and The Lovecraft Circle This recent (2002) collection of Shieliana, subtitled "A Collection of Primary Documents Including Shiel's Letters to August Derleth 1929-1946" collects letters from Shiel to August Derleth, co-founder of Arkham House, and material from the correspondance of H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and others where Shiel is mentioned. Of all the material by or about Shiel that I have read amongst the material reviewed here, it is these letters which gave me the best impression of the sort of person Shiel was. His encouraging, instructive and sometimes critical comments on the stories Derleth had sent to him show him as a polite and generous older man, distinctly British in character. While some of the later letters might suggest that Shiel, then in his 80s, was plagued with a failing memory, they remain interesting in terms of who the otherwise mysterious M.P. Shiel was.

The Yellow Peril characters following Kiang Ho displayed different aspects of what the West most feared. In 1896 Robert Chambers published a series of stories in The Maker of Moons about Yue-Laou, the undisputed ruler of an empire in the middle of China as well as a sorcerer of the blackest magics. Yue-Laou is in one respect an updated version of the evil magician character which had appeared in various forms through the 19th century, but usually as an Italian or an Egyptian. But Yue-Laou is also the first Yellow Peril sorcerer, a character type that would appear again, as in Allen Upward's The Yellow Hand Weird Tales in 1929.
The next significant Yellow Peril character was a military leader, reflecting the Western fear of the supposed "limitless hordes" of Chinese overrunning white countries. In 1898 M.P. Shiel wrote The Yellow Danger,
