Pictorial olive green cloth, green silk ribbon. Originally published by Macmillan in 1912. This is considered by many to be Blackwood's finest collection. A massive volume with fifteen stories many of novella length. These stories are inspired by Nature and lean toward the pagan supernatural. Included are the the original illustrations as well as the front panel pictorial by W. Graham Robertson and an introduction by Mike Ashley. A beautiful edition of this classic collection. Fine in dust jacket. $60.00 Ferris, Henry. A NIGHT WITH MEPHISTOPHELES. [Horam, East Sussex]: Tartarus Press, [1997]. First edition. Edited and with an introduction by S. T. Joshi. Gathers stories and essays previously unpublished in book form. In his introduction, Joshi suggests that Ferris deserves to stand along side the great writers of 19th century supernatural literature. Of note is that a story previously attributed to Sheridan Le Fanu, A Night at the Bell Inn" was found to be authored by Ferris and included here. More interesting is that after publication of this volume it was discovered that two of the tales were in fact not authored by Ferris and one was an obscure translation of an E. T. A. Hoffmann story. Bumped corners, else fine in dust jacket. $35.00

John Pelan's Horror Core List
As part of a ongoing series of articles in Cemetery Dance magazine, writer/editor John Pelan is in the process of presenting a list of 100 "core titles" for collectors to pursue in building a modestly-priced but nicely representative horror collection. The criteria are that the books must be hardcover, contain material primarily from the period 1900-1973, be available for $50 or less on the used book market, and each author may only be represented by one title. John has been kind enough to allow us to present the (near) complete list online. Aickman, Robert - Night Voices: Strange Stories : Victor Gollancz 1985. Aiken, Joan - The Green Flash Amis, Kingsley - The Green Man : NY: Harcourt Brace World 1970. Andreyev, Leonid - Visions : NY: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich 1987.
