A talk with Carol Shields
Interview by Ellen Kanner Carol Shields has an affinity for mystery, for mazes, for riddles. To her mind, we're the biggest mystery there is. "I've felt all my life that I was a kind of maze," says a woman in Shields' new novel "Larry's Party." "There was something hidden in the middle of me, but no one could find it, it was so deeply concealed." As in her 1995 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Stone Diaries," "Larry's Party" tries to make sense of that interior maze, revealing the mad puzzle of our inner lives. "I'm concerned about the unknowability of other people," says Shields from the University of Manitoba, where she is Professor of English. "That's why I love biography and the idea of the human life told or shown. Of course, this is why I love novels, too. In novels, you get to hear how people are thinking. That's why I read fiction." It's also why she writes it. "Birth, life, love, work, death, this is the primary plot," she says and made this life arc exceptional in "The Stone Diaries," a work of fiction shaped like a biography. The novel's heroine Daisy Goodwill is an ordinary enough woman, but Shields makes Daisy resonant. Daisy speaks to and for all women.

BIO
Carol Shields is the author of ten novels and two collections of short stories. She is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for THE STONE DIARIES, which was also shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and the Orange Prize for LARRY'S PARTY. Born and brought up in Chicago, Carol Shields has lived in Canada since 1957. Back to top.
INTERVIEW May 10, 2002 Carol Shields, author of UNLESS, puts a woman's life under the microscope with thought-provoking frankness. In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Kathy Weissman she remarks on marriage, feminist outrage and her own unique approach to writing. BRC: You've said in an interview that UNLESS "just came out." How do you think this spontaneity makes it different from your previous books? CS: I've never believed in "inspiration" or the mystique of writing. But I suppose all these drugs we draw into our bodies and our altered sense of time must make us aware in a new way - and give us a sense of permission. BRC: Reta Winters, your protagonist, mentions how important work is in creating her characters - and, clearly, this is important for you as well, in your fiction and in your life, whether it's cleaning the house or writing a novel. Can you elaborate?

Carol Shields
Writer USA/ Canada Born 16 May 1936
Carol Shields was born and grew up in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago. She was the third child of a sweet factory manager and a schoolteacher. After Hanover College, Indiana, she won a place on an exchange programme with Exeter University. There she found a more academic atmosphere, in which she thrived, and a Canadian engineering graduate student, whom she subsequently married.
Over the next ten years or so she moved around Canada with her husband, had five children, came back to England (Manchester) for three years, and wrote the occasional short story. Aged 29, she wrote seven poems for a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Young Writers Competition - and won. There followed a period of poetry writing, a master's programme in English at Ottawa University, a thesis on Susanna Moodie, a 19th century Canadian fiction writer, and two books of poetry, 'Others' and 'Intersect'. The week she turned 40 her first novel 'Small Ceremonies', was published, her thesis was accepted for publication, and she was about to leave for a year in France during her husband's sabbatical. There she immediately started her second novel, 'The Box Garden'.
Carol Shields now lives in Winnipeg, is Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg and a full-time writer. She has previously published two collections of short stories as well as six novels. 'Mary Swann' was the first to be published in the UK in 1990, followed by 'Happenstance', which combined two earlier novels published separately, in 1991 and 'The Republic of Love' in 1992. 'The Stone Diaries' was published in August 1993, and was short-listed for the Booker Prize. It is now a bestselling paperback, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in April 1995. 'Various Miracles', a collection of short stories, was published to critical rapture in November 1994, and her first two novels, 'Small Ceremonies' and 'The Box Garden', saw their first UK publication in February and June 1995 respectively.

    Carol Shields
Of Carol Shields' latest novel, The New York Times Book Review writes, " The Stone Diaries reminds us again why literature matters." In all of Shields' writing, one is not only reminded of why literature matters, but also why individual lives, and the forces which make up those lives, matter a great deal. Born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1935, Carol Shields studied at Hanover College, the University of Exeter in England and received an MA from the University of Ottawa. At age 22, she married Donald Hugh Shields and moved to Canada where she has lived ever since. She is the mother of five now grown children. Shields has been a Professor at the University of Ottawa, the University of British Columbia, and has taught at the University of Manitoba for the past fifteen years. In 1996, she became the Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg. Carol Shields is perhaps best known for her Pulitzer Prize winning novel

    Shields, Carol The Stone Diaries
Genre Novel (361 pp. in alternate source) Keywords Abandonment Abortion Adolescence Adoption ... Time Summary The Stone Diaries recount the life of Daisy Goodwill (1905-199? [sic]). "[W]ife, mother, citizen of our century," her son closes the benediction of her memorial service. Yet Daisy is also the orphaned daughter of an orphanher dramatic birth a turning point for her father, the neighboursand a social outcast. Daisy becomes a happy child, a lifelong friend, a college graduate, a consummate gardener, a cultivator of stories, a pragmatist, a romantic, a widow twice (once scandalously, once more ordinarily) . . . . In short, the diaries of "Day's Eye" bear witness to the extraordinary lives of seemingly ordinary "citizens." Commentary Shields's creation of a fictional (auto-)biographyincluding an epigraph comprised of a published poem by the protagonist's granddaughter, a family tree, and photographs of the main charactersmoves readably between first and third person narrations, internal and external focalisations, and an unobtrusive, then intrusive implied author. It strikes directly at the relationships among fictional and nonfictional narratives, literature, biography and autobiography, blurring multiple boundaries. This fictitious nonfiction emphasizes the constructedness of all narrations, oral or written, whether they are stories we tell ourselves about our life, others tell about us, we tell about others, or ones we believe are not "made up".
