    Interview With Carol Shields
when she was on tour promoting Larry's Party,
    for Boswell Literary Magazine
    Henry:
Do you believe that words are dying out? Shields: Well, I'd think I'd heard - which is quite alarming - that 5,000 words have dropped out of the average vocabulary in the last 10 years - if that's true, that's very alarming, isn't it? If it's true. Henry: It doesn't seem like many people even have 5,000 words. Shields: One of the words that occurs to me is the word feisty. The New Yorker never used to allow that word. And I can see why because it replaces about 10 other words, gradations of feistiness. Henry: What other words does it replace? Shields: Oh, irritability, different grades. I think that's only one example, but I expect this is what's happened. When we call someone a nerd or nerdy you know there are other words and I think for every single word that comes in it replaces quite a few. That must be one of the reasons. Henry: Why do you think that's happening?

It happens that I am going through a period of great unhappiness and loss just now. All my life I've heard people speak of finding themselves in acute pain, bankrupt in spirit and body, but I've never understood what they meant. To lose. To have lost. I believed these visitations of darkness lasted only a few minutes or hours and that these saddened people, in between bouts, were occupied, as we all were, with the useful monotony of happiness. But happiness is not what I thought. Happiness is the lucky pane of glass you carry in your head. It takes all your cunning just to hang on to it, and once it's smashed you have to move into a different sort of life.

In my new life — the summer of the year 2000 — I am attempting to "count my blessings." Everyone I know advises me to take up this repellent strategy, as though they really believe a dramatic loss can be replaced by the renewed appreciation of all one has been given. I have a husband, Tom, who loves me and is faithful to me and is very decent looking as well, tallish, thin, and losing his hair nicely. We live in a house with a paid-up mortgage, and our house is set in the prosperous rolling hills of Ontario, only an hour's drive north of Toronto. Two of our three daughters, Natalie, fifteen, and Christine, sixteen, live at home. They are intelligent and lively and attractive and loving, though they too have shared in the loss, as has Tom.

    UNLESS:
    A Novel.
    By Carol Shields.
Fourth Estate, $24.95; 224 pp. UNLESS , the new book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Carol Shields, is entirely satisfying. It runs the course of a traditional novel, fanning out its plot and subplots, basting clues to character development. It's funny, stirring and then, with a twist at the end, complete. It is entirely unlike Shields' celebrated Stone Diaries , in which the story line toggled and literary devices played. However, the tone is the same. Shields' voice, tender and moderated at all times, remains wise and very readable. In Unless , Reta Winters is a writer in a suburb of Toronto. She is married and has three daughters, the oldest of whom, Norah, has suddenly left college and now sits on the corner of a city street with a sign in her lap that says, "Goodness." With Norah so abruptly transformed, the rest of the Winters family tries to live a life of normalcy. This is, of course, impossible. Reta, who narrates the novel, reflects:

    "Unless"
"Everyone is coming out these days for the pleasures of ordinary existence. Sunsets. Dandelions. Fencing in the back yard and staying home." Carol Shields wrote these lines several years ago in a short story titled "Soup du Jour." In that same story, she quotes a fictitious newspaper columnist as announcing, "The quotidian is where it's at." Shields latest novel, Unless , is very much about "the pleasures of ordinary existence," though ordinary existence under stress. Reta Winters (nee Summers), Shields' narrator, "has a husband who loves me and is faithful to me and is very decent looking as well." Reta and her family have lived for twenty years in a hundred year-old, roomy, yet simple brick Ontario farmhouse "weathered into durable authenticity…with a paid-up mortgage." Their home is located near the small village of Orangetown, in beautiful, rolling countryside an hour north of Toronto. Reta has three "intelligent and lively and attractive and loving" teenage daughters, and a shaggy Golden Retriever named Pet.

    Encyclopedia Britannica on Carol Shields
    Shields, Carol
Novelist Carol Shields fashioned the type of fiction she had wanted to read but could not find: stories about women's friendships and their inner moral and intellectual lives. In 1995 The Stone Diaries (1993) was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction after having won the 1993 Canadian Governor General's Literary Award and the 1994 National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. The novel, a portrait of an ordinary woman whose life spanned most of the 20th century, was written in a semiautobiographical style and contained quotations from letters, newspapers, and characters in the novelit even had a section of photographs.
The way people appeared and related to one another was the theme throughout Shields's fiction and poetry. Two collections of her poetry, Others (1972) and Intersect (1974), concerned relationships and distances between people. Her first two novels, Small Ceremonies (1976) and The Box Garden (1977), were about two women who were the third generation of twins.

The Feminine Critique Carol Shields Born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1935, Carol Shields studied at Hanover College, the University of Exeter in England and received an MA from the University of Ottawa. She has been a Professor at the University of Ottawa, the University of British Columbia, and has taught at the University of Manitoba for the past fifteen years. In 1996, she became the Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg. Unless: A Novel by Carol Shields. If I have any reputation at all it is for being an editor and scholar, and not for producing, to everyone's amazement, a fresh, bright, springtime piece of fiction,' or so it was described in Publishers Weekly. That cheeky self-description sums up the protagonist of Shields's latest, the precocious, compassionate and feisty Reta Winters, an accomplished author who suddenly finds her literary success meaningless when the oldest of her three daughters, Norah, drops out of college to live on the streets of Toronto with a placard labeled Goodness hung around her neck. The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields. This fictionalized autobiography of Daisy Goodwill Flett, captured in Daisy's vivacious yet reflective voice, has been winning over readers since its publication in 1995, when it won the Pulitzer Prize. After a youth marked by sudden death and loss, Daisy escapes into conventionality as a middle-class wife and mother. Years later she becomes a successful garden columnist and experiences the kind of awakening that thousands of her contemporaries in mid-century yearned for but missed in alcoholism, marital infidelity and bridge clubs.
