WORLD-WIDE WHC SHIKI HAIKU POEMS CONTEST

The World Haiku Club is pleased to announce the results of "World-wide Shiki Haiku Poems Contest" in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary (Japanese calendar) of the death of Masaoka Shiki. This is part of our year-long celebrations and will serve their main purpose, "Reappraising Masaoka Shiki". By writing haiku poems for this contest, we wish to deepen our true understanding of the father of modern haiku in the 21st century context. Together with the prize-winning haiku, other works of outstanding merit will be "published" in the first issue (prototype) of our forthcoming comprehensive magazine "World Haiku Review".
Criteria used were haiku poems inspired by Shiki in any aspects of him and/or reflecting the spirit of Shiki's own haiku poems. It was a sophisticated contest which is designed to entice you to read a lot of Shiki's haiku poems.
There is one very interesting characteristic which has emerged very prominently in almost all entries. The haiku poems submitted were much closer to Japanese haiku than the usual haiku poems which one reads everyday in the West. This may not be, or ought not be, surprising since the requirements were to write haiku inspired by Shiki but it does seem to be telling us an important lesson. Why are they closer (and arguably more “genuine”) to Japanese haiku?

What is a Kukai
A kukai is a peered review poetry contest. A topic is assigned by the secretary, and all poets submit their poems on that topic to the secretary. An 'anonymized' list is then distributed to all participating poets and they are invited to vote. Votes are returned anonymously to the secretary who tallies the votes and resends the poems to the participants, this time with names and points revealed.

Overview Located only 25 kilometers from the Metropolitan Region of Tokyo, Shiki City is a rapidly growing bedroom community for Tokyo commuters. Shiki City originally developed as a business and trade center due its extensive network of canals and rivers, which provided for water-based transportation of goods and services. Urban expansion and in particular the growth of housing construction has almost eliminated the forests that existed in and around the city, has contributed to the increasing contamination of the Shingasi river, and continues to threaten fertile agricultural land in the Shiki area. Shiki City's strong tradition of environmental activism dates back to1972, when local residents joined together in a community-based effort to clean the surrounding rivers. Since then, a number of community-based environmental organizations have been established and have taken active steps towards environmental conservation.
Governance: Basic Environmental Plan In response to these growing environmental problems, in February 1999 Shiki City Government instituted the Shiki City Basic Environmental Plan as a way to control development and protect the character of the city. Focusing on the three rivers that flow into the city, the objective of the plan is to construct a city that gives both environmental conservation and city development equal consideration, and create a harmony between the two. Development of the Basic Environmental Plan began in 1997 as a way to facilitate implementation of the environmental side of the Comprehensive City Program.

98. THE USUI SYSTEM OF REIKI USUI SHIKI RYOHO
THE USUI SYSTEM OF REIKI USUI shiki RYOHO. Usui deepening. If anypart is changed or left out, it is no longer Usui shiki Ryoho.
http://www.reikiassociation.org.uk/definition.html
THE USUI SYSTEM OF REIKI: USUI SHIKI RYOHO Usui Shiki Ryoho (the Usui System of Natural Healing), known as Reiki , is a form of healing and spiritual awakening, received and developed 100 years ago by a Japanese man, Mikao Usui, and brought to the West via Hawaii in 1937. It is passed on from one person to another through specific initiation rites, teachings and defined forms of practice. The Japanese word reiki can be translated as 'universal or spiritually guided life force' and the Usui System is a way of working with reiki for healing of self and others. The word healing is used in the sense of regaining harmony and wholeness and Usui Shiki Ryoho addresses the whole person, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. The integrated way of Usui Shiki Ryoho has four Aspects: healing practice, personal development, spiritual discipline and mystic order. For the gifts of the whole to be realised they need to be held in a balanced way, not allowing any to overshadow the others. The Aspects spring from a central core of practice and philosophy called the Form, comprised of nine Elements, each bringing unique lessons. The combination of all the Elements and Aspects and their inter-relationships creates the system which has a proven, predictable capacity to take people along a profound path of healing, growth and spiritual deepening. If any part is changed or left out, it is no longer Usui Shiki Ryoho. The importance and deeper meaning of the elements and aspects and the whole system is mainly beyond words and gradually unfolds through personal experience. The following is a brief outline

Masaoka Shiki International Haiku Award, which is named after the founder of modern Japanese haiku, was established based on the principles set forth in Matsuyama Declaration , adopted at Shimanamikaido '99 Haiku convention in Matsuyama held in September 1999. We hope that the establishment of this award attracts people's attention to Masaoka Shiki as a globally recognized poet and to haiku as the shortest form of world poetry throughout the world.
We are about to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Shiki's death. It is our strong hope that this establishment will be a stepping stone to the rise of awareness of haiku globally and be linked the further development of haiku in the 21st century.
