Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by Nancy Lindheim

For my taste, Berry's reading of Astrophil and Stella looks too hard for narrative trajectories that turn idealism into Machiavellian pursuits of sexual power, love into lust. In spite of appreciating its `comic delight' (the sequence meets the Defence's definition of comedy), this is a moralist's view of the work, taking it to task for not offering resolutions or cures. Berry is interestingly disappointed in Stella's conventional excuse of `Tyran honour' to refuse adultery, noting how it deflates Astrophil's high moral conception of her virtue. Understanding Sidney's purpose to be anti-Petrarchan, Berry prefers Shakespeare's more `moral' debunking through the dark lady. But Shakespeare's questionable strategy is to make her a whore. Even if reduced to a `stereotypical court lady, trapped in an unhappy marriage but worried about social disgrace,' Stella is not vilified.

Philip Sidney
Profile
Poet; son of Sir Henry Sidney who was Lord President of the Council of the Marches and whose seat, in this capacity, was Ludlow Castle. Sir Henry was Lord President from 1560 to 1586 but was not in attendance at Ludlow throughout that period. Philip though, would certainly have visited Ludlow as a child and he was sent to Shrewsbury School where he quickly made friends with Fulke Greville . He went on of course to become Sir Philip Sidney; friend of Spenser and one of the most influential of Elizabethan poets. Sidney's life was all too brief but he left literary gems such as Arcadia Astrophel and Stella (1591) and the Apologie for poetrie (1591). A statue of Sidney was erected outside the new Shrewsbury School buildings as a memorial to the dead of the first World War.

National Portrait Gallery Note on the Web edition: This html etext of Astrophel and Stella was prepared from Alexander B. Grosart's The Complete Poems of Sir Philip Sidney [1877]* by Richard Bear rbear@oregon.uoregon.edu This edition is dedicated to the memory of Sidney Rust. *In some instances Gerald Bullett's reading has been preferred. See Silver Poets of the Sixteenth Century , Everyman, 1947. See also Syr P. S. His Astrophel and Stella [1591], STC number 22538, for a number of changes restoring the Elizabethan grammar and punctuation. It was deemed not worth while to simply reproduce the 1591 edition, as it contains too many errors and omissions to represent Sidney's work adequately. Astrophel and Stella I Ouing in trueth, and fayne in verse my loue to show,

Pleasure might cause her reade, reading might make her know,
Knowledge might pittie winne, and pity grace obtaine,
I sought fit wordes to paint the blackest face of woe;
