Mount Silliman Kids Trip 31 Aug Ron Karpel A graphically enhanced version at http://www.karpel.org/Ron/Silliman_8_98/Silliman_98.html Starting from Rowel Meadow trailhead, we took 2 1/2 days of backpacking to get to the top of Silliman Pass. One could get here from Lodgepole in less then a day (9 mile, 4000 ft climb). But we took our time enjoying the Sierra. From Silliman Pass we followed the ridge towards the summit of Mount Silliman. About a mile later Silliman lakes came into view. We dropped from the ridge, hiked by the lakes and up through the drainage to the saddle between Mount Silliman and the picklet to it's west. Mount Silliman is protected by a formidable cliff on its north and east sides. There is only one way to get to the top. It is a narrow couloir cutting through the cliff. The couloir is visible only once you have reached top of the saddle. In spite of the hot sun, there was lots of snow in the area, ruminant of last winter's El Nino. The slope of the couloir was about 30 degree, and the snow was hard, but it didn't look too difficult. Still we didn't have ice axes or crampons, and we were not about to use them anyway. Without the ice gear there was no way to continue. It is worth noting that the west side of the ridge looks doable. We didn't have enough time to try it though.

Alta Peak, Mount Silliman
30-Sep-95
By: Rich Gnagy
This trip was led by the author and Greg Roach to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the SPS in 1955. Both of these peaks were led by the SPS in 1956, the first year in which peaks were led by the Section. I was on that climb of Alta led by Chuck Miller and assisted by Pat Meixner on June 30- July 1, 1956. It was led as a backpack with camp at Alta Meadows. Frank Bressel, assisted by Pat Meixner led Silliman as a backpack on Sept. 8-9, 1956. They camped at Twin Lakes. Saturday morning ten of us met at Wolverton for the climb of Alta. After stashing all our excess food in the bear proof containers provided, we proceeded up the trail to the summit. After a leisurely stay on the summit and much discussion we decided to return to the cars by way of Pear Lake. We headed east: finding our way through and around the field of large boulders, then north down the drainage to Pear Lake which we passed on the east. There is some 3rd class going down and around the lake. but enjoyable. We hit the trail at the north end of Pear Lake and hiked past Emerald Lake, Aster Lake, and Heather Lake. Then, rather than going over Heather Gap we took the trail to the right past The Watchtower which most of us climbed and had fun bouldering on the various summits before returning to the cars. This whole loop trip was on trail except the stretch from the summit down to Pear Lake. I would recommend this loop trip to anyone who likes a little 3rd class.

As the Clouds Roll In
Mount Silliman
May 1-2 1999
Ron Karpel
We were supposed to climb Mt. Shasta that weekend, but got an unfavorable weather forecast, so we decided to climb Mt. Silliman instead. We thought Shasta, Silliman, what's the difference? Reading through the many trip reports for Silliman and talking to people about it, it becomes clear that Silliman is not as easy as one would expect. Although, the statistics of 4,500 ft. and 10 mile round trip imply a relatively easy mountain that could be climbed as a day hike, in winter or early spring things can be quit different. The rout is covered with snow that makes progress difficult. Worst, the weather pattern seem to be clear in the morning, but getting cloudy and stormy in the afternoon. Many trips to Silliman end with a statement such as: "We made it about 80% of the way to the summit, but alas we did not beat the clouds closing in on an otherwise perfect-weather morning." (Rich Calliger) Our plan was to make this into a 2-day trip, and attempt the summit early on Sunday before the clouds have a chance to play their dirty trick. We started Saturday morning under bright blue sky on the Twins Lake trail. The trail was free of snow until it bends north at the end of the long assent. From there it was mostly firm snow 2-4 feet deep. The trail was marked by an indentation in the snow, but we managed to loose it at one of the creek crossing. We left the main trail at Silliman Creek and followed the drainage high on the right bank. The use trail was not visible as was the main trail to Twin Lakes, and snowshoes were needed to avoid post holing. We setup camp in a nice flat area on the north side of the creek just after it makes the sharp bend to the east.

the language poet's burden re: Silliman's Blog, Friday Nov 8, 2002 what's disappointing is ron silliman's failure to understand the reason behind some of the negative reactions to the statements made about Toronto poets on his blog. what is at issue is not the relative merits of literary group formation. the issue is one of inaccurate representation, of a resistance to being labelled by them what don't know any better. Silliman is right when he says that name calling is counter-productive. So why does he persist in doing it? what's disappointing is ron silliman's failure to recognize a sincere question about the absence of a comments function on his blog, a question motivated out of a recognition of the increasing frustration over the lack of an appropriate venue for public response to his posts, a frustration which might, in part, account for the heat in e-mails he's received. what's disappointing is, in a medium where authorial cred is content driven and established from peer to peer, having to watch silliman, one of the innovators of a literary movement whose authors were interested in divesting themselves of a certain degree of power, reinvest his monoblogic authorship with as much canonical authority as possible through tone of voice, through the links on the blog which boast his print publications and honours (again, a sharp contrast to the standard issue collegial blog roll). And just in case there was any doubt, the blog's title reinforces just whose position is being advanced here. in

Having had a source for Sandoz for much of 1965, I found Owsley's stuff
overrated and unreliable. Although by comparison with what came later,
it was the work of a Michaelangelo. By the time it became habitual to
