Caithness is Clan Sinclair and Clan Gunn country , and we are members of the Clan Sinclair Society in Caithness The Sinclairs are like many Scots Clans (including Stewarts, Gordons, Chisolms, Colquhons, Montgomerys and Frasers) are of Norman origin, descended from Rollo, or Rolf the Ganger, son of Rognvald the Mighty, Earl of Møre and Romsdal in Western Norway, and whose son became Jarl of Orkney (including Caithness). The Sinclairs first settled at Rosslyn, south of Edinburgh. By his father William's marriage, Henry Sinclair became Jarl of Orkney, still a Norwegian title on 2nd August 1379. The Lairds of Caithness share a heritage with the Sinclairs and my family is permitted to wear the by the Clan Chief, the Rt Hon The Earl of Caithness PC.

Iain Sinclair's novels and essays have seen him move from underground cult status towards mainstream acclaim over the last decade. His territory is the 'psychogeography' of environments and the complex of phantom characters who inhabit them. London is at the centre of most of his writing.
"The word ' Psychogeography ' comes from DeQuincey's wanderings, slightly druggy, no pattern, mapping out the city in a dream-like state. Then with Walter Benjamin and the Situationists the term becomes more extreme, a matter of taking very conceptual decisions about the walking you would do and how you would access the city like that. I guess the idea flourished in the 60s. I thought it was a nice little franchise that you could reinvent in the 90s. Then it became a convenient way of describing something I'd being doing for donkey years. I was born in Wales and there's a whole culture of classic Italian cafes there. Every town had one and the owners all came from the same place in Italy. Some were prisoners of war. A lot had settled in Bridge End...they worked on farms and married Welsh girls. There were two major families who ran the whole thing. It was partly ice cream bars and partly cafes. The only social centre in each place used to be an Italian cafe.

Lights Out for the Territory is Iain Sinclair's re-mapping, through nine essays, of 1990s London, a non-fiction extension of his researches for the novels Radon Daughters and Downriver . Its genesis is a sequence of walks, bisecting the capital's boroughs and re-working conventional delineations of the city as a series of 'zones': citadels of power and money in some cases, blasted enclosures for the marginal and disenfranchised in others. The essays take the form of extended monologues, a palimpsest of local history, biography, contemporary politics and social policy, and autobiography. This potentially random narrative is held together through the specific and detailed geography of the walks, and a web of texts (London-based novels, poems and films) that inform Sinclair's personal topography of the city. This is not a vision that permits any postmodernist celebration of commercial popular culture, and there is a savage humour in his treatment of gentrified redevelopment. The opening chapters are particularly caustic: here's his vision of the pit-bulls and satellite dishes of East London:

    LIGHTS OUT FOR THE TERRITORY
by Iain Sinclair reviewed by Paul McRandle

BORN A WELSHMAN, become a failed film maker and walker of London roadways, a gardener, a dealer in used books, Iain Sinclair has remained throughout a writer who compresses the leaves of his own life with those of pulp crimes novels, treatises on magic, manifestos, and architectural history into a dense, mouldering prose long on evocation. His presence, even in his fiction, is so clearly felt, that it is impossible to distinguish history from the dramatized recreation of his biography. In Lud Heat , he appears as gardener, wandering London’s green spaces; in White Chappell Scarlet Tracings he prowls the land for rare books while the Ripper murders unfold in another time; and in Downriver he searches for Thameside settings to shoot a documentary.

Keywords: Cult writing, Popular Culture Title: Crash Author/Artist: Iain Sinclair Publisher: BFI Publishing Media: Book Reviewer: Pan As Iain Sinclair makes clear in this slim but interesting little book, Crash exists not as a single work by Ballard, but as a sequence of projects that has mutated and evolved over time. Crash exists as a set of works by Ballard, as an exhibition piece, as a documentary, as a film by Cronenberg and now as a series of essays by Sinclair. This abundance of works, over-lapping in terms of media, time and intent are ably uncovered by Sinclair, who exposes the secret histories, the hidden and the submerged. With an almost surgical precision he delves into ‘Crash’ to expose the different agendas at work in its various incarnations. Sinclair’s critical intelligence posits Cronenberg’s film a work that obscures Ballard’s subversive fictions. He makes it clear that the film is a re-writing of Ballard. And, just as persuasively, he shows us that the film is a necessary step for Cronenberg, according him the critical respect that his earlier films did not garner. Crash was an inevitable and logical progression from A Naked Lunch With this as a central thesis Sinclair also examines JG Ballard and James Ballard. The blurring of fact and fiction, author and fictional creation, is a central theme of Ballard’s work.
