College of the City of New York, 1897. He was one of the muckrakers , and an interest in social and industrial reform underlies most of his writing. The Jungle (1906), a brutally graphic novel of the Chicago stockyards, aroused great public indignation and led to reform of federal food inspection laws. With the money from that novel, Sinclair established in 1906 his short-lived socialist community, Helicon Home Colony, at Englewood, N.J. Among Sinclair's other novels exposing social evils are King Coal Oil! Boston (on the Sacco-Vanzetti Case, 1928), and Little Steel (1938). In his social studies, such as The Brass Check (1919), on journalism, and

Upton Sinclair
Search all of Upton Sinclair American novelist, essayist, playwright, short story writer, and juvenile book writer, whose works reflect socialistic views. Sinclair stated in 1903 that "My Cause is the Cause of a man who has never yet been defeated, and whose whole being is one all devouring, God-given holy purpose". Among Sinclair's most famous books is THE JUNGLE (1906), to which the public reacted so violently that it launched a government investigation of the meatpacking plants of Chicago, and changed the food laws of America. Today his works are not widely read, mostly because writers with political and social ideals are not popular in the West - or East.
Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His family came from the ruined Southern aristocracy. His father was a liquor salesman whose alcoholism shadowed Sinclair's childhood. When Sinclair was ten, the family moved to New York. He started to write dime novels at the age of 15 and produced ethnic jokes and hack fiction for pulp magazines to finance his studies at New York City College. In 1897 he enrolled Columbia University, determined to succeed while producing one poorly paid novellette per week. During these years he wrote Clif Faraday stories (as Ensign Clarke Fitch) and Mark Mallory Stories (as Lieutenant Frederick Garrison) for various boys' weeklies. Sinclair's productivity continued through his life: he published almost 100 books.

It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it. I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach. The remedy [for the Great Depression] is to give the workers access to the means of production, and let them produce for themselves, not for others, . . . the American way. I am sustained by a sense of the worthwhileness of what I am doing; a trust in the good faith of the process which created and sustains me. That process I call God.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students generally respond to Sinclair's portrait of the unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry. They tend to be interested in the history of The Jungle how it was written, the federal legislation that was passed because of the public reaction to it, etc. The most difficult problem in teaching The Jungle is how to approach a text in which literary qualities are subordinated to political purpose. The Jungle does not lend itself to the kinds of literary discussions that most of us are accustomed to. Its literary shortcomings are obvious. One way to begin discussing The Jungle would be to approach it as a political novel. Work with your students to define the genre of the political novel. Compare The Jungle to other political novels the students might have read. Discuss the criteria by which we evaluateor should evaluatea political novel. Should our criteria include social and/or political considerations? (It might be useful here to draw a parallel between a political novel and a postmodern novel, for example, in which ideas overshadow the other ingredients of the fiction.)

The Profits Of Religion
A Study of Supernaturalism as a Source of Income and a Shield to Privilege
by Upton Sinclair
Offertory
This book is a study of Supernaturalism from a new point of view as a Source of Income and a Shield to Privilege. I have searched the libraries through, and no one has done it before. If you read it, you will see that it needed to be done. It has meant 25 years of thought and a year of investigation. It contains the facts. I am giving my time and energy, in return for one thing which you may give me the joy of speaking a true word and getting it heard. Note to fifth edition, 1926: "The Profits of Religion" was first published early in 1917. The present edition represents a sale of over 60,000 copies, without counting a dozen translations. In this edition a few errors have been corrected, but otherwise the book has not been changed. The reader will understand that references to the World War are of the date 1917, prior to America's enterance. This book is the first of a series of volumes, an economic interpertation of culture, which now includes "The Brass Check," "The Goose-step," "The Goslings," and "Mammonart."
