    • Renewal information about the Moscow Planetarium and the project of its reconstruction New section: the building of the Moscow Planetarium
The Moscow Planetarium is a center of natural sciences popularization. It was established on November 05, 1929. The principal subject of the Planetarium's activity is to read public lectures and implement scientific and artistic programs in astronomy and cosmonautics, to form scientific mentality on the basis of generalized achievements of the modern natural science. In the observatory of the Moscow Planetarium one can watch spots on the Sun, the Moon, planets and other heavenly bodies by means in the telescope. If there were just one place on Earth from which one can see stars, people would throng there in order to contemplate the miracles of the sky and admire them. Lucius A. Seneca (1 century AD)

    Revolution in Eastern Europe: 1989
    I. The Call of Freedom
March 26 When perestroika seemed to result in little but empty shelves and glasnost invited bitter complaints from the citizenry, Gorbachev sent the people to the polls-and thus let the apparatchiks take the heat. The nationwide election to the new 2,250-member Congress of People's Deputies became a stunning rebuke to the custodians of the status quo. A third of the Communist Party's regional chiefs failed to win seats. Gorbachev was counting on democratization to spur pressure for reform, but it also fanned secessionist fever in the Baltic republics and ethnic violence in the Caucasus.
"The many countries crushed into some semblance of historical and ideological unity under communism are at long last beginning to assert their claims to separate identities. These countries are claiming their right to be themselves." -Andrey Sinyavsky (one of the leading dissidents of the 1960s, immigrated to Paris in 1973 after almost six years in a labor camp)

Soon up to 1 million citizens had joined the student occupation of Tiananmen Square. then, early one morning, the tanks rolled in. One column was stopped for six minutes by a single youth. I was born in 1949 in Leningrad, USSR (now St. Petersburg, Russia); in 1983 I emigrated to the United States, leaving behind a twenty-year career in photography and journalism. Given my first camera at the age of seven, I have thought of myself as a photographer since I was eight. My first national recognition came in 1964, when my photographs were published in Sovietskoye Photo , the only Soviet photography magazine, followed the next year by an article about me featuring my photographs.
I attended Leningrad University, 1967-1973, and received M.A. in journalism and photojournalism. While at the university, I worked as a photographer for university departments and for the university newspaper. After receiving my degree, I worked as a free-lancer, as well as a staff journalist and photographer for various Leningrad newspapers and publications. I also worked as an advertising photographer for the Graphics Arts Agency (an agency of the Union of Soviet Artists), for which I produced more than 20 books.
I began making portraits of cultural figures when I was in my teens. I have made hundreds of portraits of Russian and Western cultural figures: poets, artists, film makers, dissident political figures, journalists, including Andrey Sakharov, Vaclav Havel, Andrey Tarkovsky, Derek Walcott, Czeslaw Milosz, Randy Newman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Susan Sontag, Allen Ginsberg, Israel Lopez, Joseph Mankiewicz, Eduardo Galeano, Seamus Heaney, David Mamet, Dizzy Gillespie, Joseph Brodsky and many others.

On Marxist-Leninist Aesthetics BY W.B.BLAND Originally fragments of this as a talk to the Stalin Society c.1998. INTRODUCTION ART AND SOCIETY ART is a form of production in which the producer (the artist strives by his product (the work of art) to create certain thoughts or feelings in the minds of its consumers. A product which is exclusively artistic and has no other significant function is termed fine art. A product which is primarily functional may be secondarily a work of art if its producer has been concerned not merely with its function but also with creating certain thoughts of feelings in the minds of its users. Such art is termed applied art. The content of a work of art is its subject The form of a work of art is the manner or style in which the artist has presented the content of his work of art. Realism is a trend in art which seeks to represent its subject faithfully and truthfully. An artist is a member of society, so that the art of a particular time and place cannot but be influenced by the social environment existing in that time and place. When and where a particular a social system is in harmony with the needs of the mass of the people, the prevailing thought tends to be rational, favourable to science and optimistic, while the prevailing art tends to be realistic.
